Hitman seems incredibly well received from everybody who actually played it and didn't run into PC performance issues.

I love it. One of my favorite games of last year. It's so dumb and perfect in so many ways.

I am one of those that ran into PC performance issues with HITMAN, but ultimately ended up loving that game.

Paradigm is a surreal, sci-fi adventure i've kept an eye on because i like the art and some of the voice work i've heard, but am also wary that it could be wacky for wacky sake.

Syberia is a steampunk train journey to some lonely, tranquil places. I thought about it a lot while playing 80 Days.

oh and to keep the adventure game train going, Dream Machine: Chapter 6 is finally coming out in May!

Is Syberia something where I need to play the first two first?

I'm about to hit "buy" on Thimbleweed Park.

Paradigm looks nuts!

Syberia 1 & 2 form one complete story. Syberia 3 is standalone, but, yeah you should play those two.

Are Dream Machine and Journey Down worth it? and gosh when is KRZ wrapping up?

would it be weird for me to play Syberia 3 first and then go back to 1 & 2 at a later date? kinda like with what I'm about to do with Persona 5?

yes, yes, 2019, yes

the two syberia games regularly go on sale in the weeklies for a buck. they have two competent mobile ports. no need to rush into the third game.

The sidequests in Nier are very frustrating. They're extremely fetch questy and not very good, but they really help flesh out the world add a lot of great flavor to the game so I feel compelled to complete them.

Nier has a good amount of sidequests that aren't fetchy, like the love parade and dojo fights

Honestly I've always been mystified about what makes a sidequest good to people. Almost all sidequests are the same unless they throw in some random gimmick. You go to a place and either fight the thing or collect the thing. The only game I've played that has legitimately great sidequests is Skies of Arcadia, and that's simply because exploring that world is a joy - and those are still marred by the encounter rate.

I feel like there was a decent amount of time, for sidequests that want you to find an item, I had most/all of what they were asking for already.

In some cases, especially in the second playthrough, yeah you have the items they want.

They obviously aren't ALL like that, but the ones that are suck, especially because you're just walking back and forth through the same 3 or 4 areas over and over.

sounds like Japan happened. I don't feel like Atlus USA has much say in anything. Capcom Unity is much the same. and we all know how draconian Nintendo can be.

I'm holding off on Persona 5. I really want to see it go portable and don't feel like this is the time for a 100 hour console rpg. the summer is better with all the games out right now. I'll probably turn to cosmic star heroine for my rpg fix next week.

It's definitely Atlus JP, they say as much in the note. Still doesn't make it any less backwards given the gaming landscape in 2017.

I'll probably get it tomorrow after finishing Nier. Mass Effect being a dud was a blessing in disguise because now I don't feel compelled to play it and can just go all in on Persona for the next month or two.

from the minds that brought you the only region-locked PS3 game. what a bummer.

I've got some thoughts written up and I'd share them but most of it is either speculation or initial feedback on the series touching on broad thematic beats that I already said I'm intrigued by. I will say that I like the opening. it has a framing device of in medias res interrogation that I think works very well for long-form serialized drama, and in the specific case of Persona integrates itself well into the traditional day-in-the-life structure. it's perfect for plot revelations. the cast comes together in a believable way; they're linked together by personalities and a strong sense of fighting injustice. the opening case is grounded in reality, playing off a real-world scenario with an understanding of the power dynamics at play. the brief time I've spent in the Velvet Room has alluded to the metaphysical nature in a way that makes it seem like there are real consequences for the main character.

in short, this is not just another Persona game. it has the soul of one but pushes series tropes forward in a way that keeps everything fresh.

Is there truth to the translation feeling slightly off? I didn't really notice anything in the Quick Look, but from some of the bits of dialogue I've seen posted, parts of it look very literal and unnatural in English.

the opening is peppered with awkward, literal translations yeah. it's not at the level of some of Namco's robo-translations, but it's noticeable because the silly lines clash with the natural ones. There's also a character who must have lost something in translation, because his character in English boils down to... uh, "no homo" essentially.

Alright, some Nier thoughts.

After the first route, I wasn't as high on Automata as the first Nier, but the later routes helped out a lot. I thought the story was great and I really wish I had done more of the sidequests even though I found them tedious. The ending felt slightly unsatisfying until the very end when you know what happens, and that moment hit real hard for some reason even though it's actually kind of a silly thing. I know that's pretty vague but I don't really want to spoil anything.

Gameplay-wise I think I could actually take or leave the game. There's a high probability I'm just bad, but I felt like it was a little to easy to get stunlocked by some enemies, and things got so hectic at times it was real hard to effectively dodge and move around the battlefield. I still miss the gameplay homages that the original Nier had that never really surfaced in Automata. At least fishing was optional here.

It still kinda blows my mind that this game even exists. I'm not sure why someone decided to greenlight a sequel to Nier but I'm glad they did, and given the succecss of Automata, it seems like Yoko Taro will definitely be back to do more, whether it be in the Nierverse or something new.

2017 Game Ranking: Nier > Zelda > Tales

Also played the first couple hours of Persona and boy is that game good so far. There's never been a better time to be playing video games.
