Outside of the issue that we fixed, digital purchases do require a review period before they kick over from Starter to Full editions. We apologize for the inconvenience, but it is a necessary step to combat fraud and other malicious activities that can weaken everyone's play experience.
The delay is no longer than three days, and is often much quicker than that. Hang tight. :)

Is it just me or are game companies getting worse at making games? Prior to this generation, I can't think of that many games that had problems like this. Not just this particular incident either. There have been quite a few games this generation with glitches that ruin the game and make you start over.

So I take it you're opposed to verification emails too?

So I take it you're opposed to verification emails too? I'm unopposed to taking 30 seconds to verify whatever. I am opposed to taking upwards into 3 days. It says it's "usually faster" but that gives no time frame. That could mean 2.5 days which is still dumb.
From: Aecioo | #011 It's not terrible since it's being used to stop botters buying more accounts when they get banned.
but then again they're banning botters because they don't want inflation to ruin their RMAH, so... And yet the way botters sell gold is in general chat which the game now forces you into everytime you enter the game. Maybe there's no demand for it now that the RMAH is out (haven't played since) but that annoyed the piss out of me.

You clearly have never had to wait for a verification email before. This, my friends, is entitlement of the highest order. Learn some patience, it does you good.
This isn't about entitlement. Who in their right mind would want to buy a game and wait any amount of time to be able to play it? Verification e-mails are fine, but waiting three days isn't. It isn't like buying Diablo 3 is like buying a gun. Screw the wait period.

But the people stuck at level 13 don't actually have the game in their possession.
They have a bill for the game on the credit card they used to pay it online, yes. But basically it works like this:
1) Buy a physical copy of the game online, wait 3~ days for shipping and then start playing.
2) Buy a digital copy of the game, wait 3~ days for verication, but you can start playing act 1 content immediately.
Granted you can hit level 13 and kill the skeleton king in a matter of HOURS, but it does give you time to fully download the game (5 gigs? Which could take awhile for some connections) and at least try out the variety of classes to some extent before the rest of the game is ready. Which is more than you would do buying a physical copy that had to be shipped.
I don't particularly understand how this change is particularly effective in combating "fraud and other malicious activities that can weaken everyone's play experience", but I suppose it most do something.

I left General chat once after the new patch and have not auto joined since. Yay?

It's incredibly stupid because the entire point of digital distribution is that you get your product immediately. The edge that digital distribution is that it is no hassle, immediate gratification.
It's like going and buying a game from a store that won't take a return even if the box is completely untouched. Nominally speaking, yeah, you don't get that with most digital distribution (at least, with no hassle). It's also half the point of going to the store to get a gift for your nephew on a gift receipt in case he already has it or doesn't like it.
Wow. That's pretty s***ty of them. The starter edition will last someone no more than an hour or two. Plus, they already had a 3 day delay on being able to access the RMAH for digitally purchased accounts. I don't see how this does much but f*** legitimate buyers over by making them deal with the bots and gold spam in the free starter edition.

why would anybody -ever- buy a physical copy of a PC game online
Isn't Square the worst company ever at this point in time?
It's been 8 years since they made something I enjoyed. Blizzard has given me Diablo 3 which is amazing. Activision gave me my Call of Duty Black Ops. EA has given me Fifa and Madden.
Square gave me FFX in 2001 and FFXI in 2004 and since then...

What kind of fraud is this supposed to prevent? Why does it only apply to digital copies?
Easy. Stolen credit card buys a digital copy of the game, and the farmer farms in the game for coin or auction house items and manages to sell them before getting banned for using a stolen credit card. Rinse and repeat.

They make a ton of great games, but they aren't released outside of Japan (Nanashi no Game for example was pretty neat).
Also, seems to me you haven't played any of the Dragon Quests

Devs realized that the customers are morons.
This. It's unfortunate but the gaming industry has some of the dumbest customers ever. We are letting game companies get away with such a ridiculous amount of BS.

We are calling a company worst ever for requiring you to wait 72 hours or less?
Seriously people?
You shouldn't have to wait to play a game you paid for....
But it is a great game that you will play for years after three whole whopping days.
A game developer is being called "worst ever" because they made a very fun game but if you buy it online they make you wait 72 hours before you can play it.
That's the deal breaker for you.
Really?
Man, my generation is so entitled it is a joke.

I would never play it for years. I was already extremely bored of it when I got my refund. This policy is a joke. It takes like an hour or two tops to beat the starter edition content and then you are forced to not play for 3 days. Generally the first few days after people buy a game is when they will play the most.
I love how everyone keeps calling people entitled. We are entitled because we expect to be able to play a game we paid for. Rofl. I think you are confusing the word entitled with slightly intelligent.

You are the guy who is so sore over a game that after getting a refund you feel the need to post on a video game message forum about how sad you are. Further more you are so pathetic that you need to prop up your sad, god forsaken life that revolves around fighting video game companies that have somehow wronged you and your righteous quest in a game to have the audacity to believe your compulsion and ignorance can be within the same realm of anything remotely related to the field of intelligence.
I am not everyone, you are entitled, don't invoke intelligence when you are just a whiner. K thanks.

lol "years later" I'll admit I beat the game twice (once with a Monk, once with a DH, higher difficulties don't interest me) and yeah, I played for about 60 hours, but I don't see myself picking it back up unless I get nostalgic a few weeks before the expansion comes out.

Well I don't know but as a person who gets refunds for things usually I don't hunt down topics to complain after the fact. Maybe I would fill out a customer survey. If you have a life I would suggest filling it with love and kindness. Also no comment of mine is typical, and you are a joke. Literally a joke. Truth be told it is just hope that you have no life because if you actually have one I have no idea what you are even doing making the argument you are. Go enjoy your love and happiness if you have it, that was the least of my points.

"Higher difficulties don't interest me" okay fair enough. Diablo 3 though for a large portion of the base is going to be just like D2 was: a lot of a time sink. I wasn't trying to make some bold statement there, it just follows.
