Is there really a typo in the title or is '' bad rap '' a thing?

Edit : A just checked, well then, had no idea you could say that.

I hate Majora's Mask. It's an atrocity. IMO, it gets a good rap from too many people. It's a great example of developers using an existing engine to make a tacked-on game with extra gimmicks, except the gimmicks make the game awful, and it was otherwise nowhere near as good as it's predecessor anyway.

When Majora's Mask was first released, I can tell you that the consensus among my N64-owning friends was that it was a disgrace. For whatever reason(s) they just did. Not. Like it.

As time went on, I saw a growing trend toward loving the heck out of the game with regard to mainstream attention. I've lost contact with most of those N64-owning kids, so I lack a closer view of those changes. But the game, like The Wind Waker, has changed in perception radically over time.

I don't know, I'd say by 2004-2005 people everywhere were talking about how great a game it was.

Majora's Mask has received very little hate in the past... I don't know, 7-8 years or so? Probably more like nine, really. People were originally kind of down on it for not being similar enough to its predecessor, but it began to pick up some clout once the initial shock faded. By the time the Wii era began, MM was almost universally accepted as a classic.

In a nutshell, MM is the "It Was Written" of gaming.

Come to think of it, I think Wind Waker probably helped out MM's reputation quite a bit. After all, a lot of people were b****ing about WW being too kiddy... which probably made MM look a lot more fascinating by comparison.

Yeah, indeed. There's a commonly-held perception that MM is the darkest game in the series, and so it was definitely going to appear all the more attractive and get placed upon a big pedestal when people complained about WW's alleged childishness.

This reminds me of a link to a site I stumbled upon once that detailed, with screenshots, many of the subdued darker elements of MM, like the scenery, things hidden in the background, etc. as well as the more obvious elements/themes. I know that sounds vague, but does anyone know what I'm talking about? I'd love to check that page out again.

Heck, look at Majora's Mask's performances on POTDs on this site and see how horribly it did in the older polls.

To date, Majora's Mask is the last Zelda game I have played. I don't see that as changing any time soon. (OK, that's not because MM is awful so much as I just haven't owned a Nintendo console, but I'm going to pretend like it is.)

So if it takes an even worse Zelda game to make Majora's Mask look good, well, it's never going to get that opportunity with me.

All this talk about MM being the darkest game in the series makes me want a T-Shirt with a picture of the moon about to hit Clock Town, and the caption "This is the darkest timeline"

Also, it got a bad rap/rep at the time for not being identical to OoT, as most sequels to massively successful games are hated for being slightly different. Most people got over that pretty quickly, but the stigma stuck in 'the consensus'.

This. People don't deal well with change and often over react in negative ways when presented with the unexpected. But as they got used to MM's differences they warmed up to it.

The year MM really started to get popular was 2009 when it came out on the VC and more people had a chance to play it, although it had been steadily gaining popularity prior to that too. It didn't sell much on the N64 with its late release (post GameCube announcement) and very poor marketing on behalf on Nintendo, combined with the reaction to it being different from Ocarina of Time from fans who played it first discouraging people from buying it.

What's funny is that people still fuss that it uses the same graphics and some of the models from Ocarina of Time, even if almost half of the models in Majora's Mask are entirely new, and it's not the only Zelda to reuse past assets. Oracle of Seasons and Ages use the sprites and engine from Link's Awakening, The Minish Cap uses the engine and some sprites from Four Swords and Four Swords Adventures uses background graphics from A Link to the Past, and Spirit Tracks uses models and the engine from Phantom Hourglass. I rarely, if ever, see these games the target of complaints about graphics reuse. It's actually quite a nice way to save time, particularly in 3D games, because instead of taking 5 years to make all new models and having reused puzzles and a recycled story, they can recycle the less important things like models and focus on making a better story and more interesting and new puzzles. It's really too bad that Zelda fans were so against MM when it came out, Nintendo got scared into never reusing graphics again for their major console games which means we have to wait longer between titles and haven't seen a home console sequel in 12 years.

do people really still complain about this? I remember this being a big deal around when it was released, but when I see people complain about MM these days it's more about it not having enough dungeons or the time system.

actually the fact that other zelda games started re-using assets from previous zelda's as well might be the reason why people don't complain about it that much anymore.
