Man, there were some people in Vancouver. One went without the belt, the rest wore them. It was icy and they spun out massively. The one guy more or less became a human propeller, smashed everyone's heads in. <_<

I'd rather die than be maimed, not wearing it and if someone hits me they better be doing 90mph and come at me head on.

also the human propeller thing sounds amazing, if I'm going to die because some idiot doesn't know how to drive(no wonder seat belts are mandatory in massachusetts...), I want to do something AWESOME like that on my way out.

Remember when seat belt laws weren't mandatory, and through incrementalism you can now be jailed through not wearing one?

still not mandatory in my state! but yeah, this country is well on it's way to becoming a totalitarian regime so it's not surprising, the groundwork is already in place really, just need the right(er, wrong) person to seize control of it.

addendum to this, china is also infamous for suicidally aggressive drivers, there seems to be a correlation between living in the shackles of communism and driving like you really want someone to kill you. good to see america heading down this road!

Sure, but most of those people have a friend or somebody they know with a car, and probably leave the city once in a while.

For example, city friends I know like that always need a ride back from a BBQ.

I've been in 12 car accidents (I was only the driver for three of them, and the cops were able to see that none were my fault), no seat belt in a single one of them, and I've never even gotten a scratch. Seat belts are overrated and the government having the military do seat belt checks is martial law through and through.

12? How does that even happen.

I've never even came close to get into a car accident and I've been into car plenty of times, both as a driver and passenger.

I was in a car wreck about 6 years ago. I was sitting in the back seat with my cousin going through a hilly/twisty road in Pennsylvania (like there are other kinds there), we spun out on ice, and went through a guard rail. Me and my parents (who were in the front) were all wearing seat belts and got out with a few bumps and scrapes. My cousin sitting next to me? Wasn't wearing one and he was hospitalized with several fractures, a concussion, and a dislocated shoulder that he got from essentially slamming against the roof and sides of the car (which didn't happen to me or my parents because interestingly, we were wearing our seat belts).

So yeah, I never forget to buckle up anymore after that, personally.

That's fortunate for you, but it's a poor justification for not wearing seatbelts. Now I agree that it would be better if they wern't so strict when it comes to seatbelts, but it didn't come out of nowhere.

But yeah, how severe were these accidents? Because while seatbelts aren't strictly mandatory in all cases, they sure as heck reduce death rate in some cases.

Pretty sure seat belt laws are more of an excuse to take money from people than a stepping stone in the grand totalitarian conspiracy.

And of all the ways the government has devised to excise money from you in regards to automobile ownership -- titles, licenses, registration, insurance -- seat belt laws are the least egregious and most easily avoidable. Or maybe that's just what they want me to think and I'm playing right into their hands!!1

I always assumed automobile covered everything from cars to buses, so long as it was on the road, enclosed on four sides, and had at least 4 wheels. Wikipedia does not agree with this, though.

A big problem with people who avoid wearing seatbelts is that they tend to pass that mindset on to their children. Studies have shown that people who don't regular wear seatbelts often don't buckle their kids, which not only endangers them but also passes on that habit. Seatbelt enforcement laws have changed that trend.

So yeah, responses like "I never wear my seatbelt" bug me.

EDIT: I have no idea how I misspelled that four times.
