We know it's going to pretty much be an abysmal failure and mark the end of Nintendo's home console days. If we don't technically know that, we're at least pretty sure.

Come on, now. Who is really excited for this system? I mean, really, really excited.

Of course some people are, but not many in respect to the launch of other major consoles.

I bet more people were excited for NeoGeo.

People will be once they know more about it. Once more games are shown, more features, the price there will be more hype. Nintendo can mess things up, of course, but it's hard to generate excitement without games.

Then they're probably going to be abysmal failures, too. It's the end of gaming as we know it!

I've become quite bitter toward Nintendo. I don't know if I changed more or if they did, but I just don't like most of what they do nowadays.

Clearly, I'm not indicative of all people interested in video games and I'm certainly no longer Nintendo's primary market. I, at least, wasn't during their Wii era. With a name like Wii U and confirmation that it will use the Wii's controller (and, additionally, a tablet), Nintendo is fully embracing its current branding, which will do little to recapture lost fans, like myself.

Plus, Nintendo just posted a pretty huge loss. Their first one ever, I believe. I'm not pretending to be a marketing genius (though someone at Nintendo at least was for being able to take Wii as far as they have), but that tells me they need to do something drastic to rekindle interest in their products.

Sure, we know very little about Wii U (including whether or not that will be its official name), but I was more interested in it when I only heard Nintendo was working on another system. Speculation (and hope) was more exciting than actual information, despite how little there even was. Everything so far has just been disappointing.

Specs stronger than the PS3 and 360 is a disappointment?

The only disappointment so far is you can't have more than one of those controllers being used at once (forcing the others to use the wiimotes). And last I heard they were trying to figure out a way to fix that.

I think the controller is fine. There's a lot of cool things you can do with the screen, and just the idea of a modern Nintendo system with a solid online network is exciting. I think the Wii U will be a more 'hardcore' system than the Wii was. It should get real multiplatform games for a change.

That loss was a drop in the bucket compared to their war chest of billions of dollars.

The specs are a disappointment. Nintendo is just now playing catch-up. It would be surprising if they weren't better than the current systems that have been out for 5 and 6 years.

The point is that they obviously weren't doing something right. If they don't fix that, their bucket is going to start filling.

Anyway, we'll just have to wait to see what Wii U is really all about when they start releasing more information. I'm not going to be all anti-Nintendo if they make a cool system, but I'm not expecting much from them anymore.

we'll see how the controller goes. personally I'd rather just have a traditional Dualshock style controller but maybe it'll be alright. my guess is that it'll go like the DS. devs will explore the touchscreen a lot at first and end up using it in minor and inoffensive ways in the long run.

How could specs NOT be stronger than PS3/360? I mean, you can probably assemble something for $100 today that beats their specs.

I have a Wii I'm severely disappointed in because I didn't expect it to be so bad and gimmicky. I pretty much haven't done a thing with any of my Wii-mote only games.

The Wii U will be even worse. That's why I don't care about it. I was off the bandwagon once it was announced and Nintendo's stock predictably plummeted at well.

I am so not excited for the Wii U

That being said, I also have no excitement at all for either the new Xbox or Playstation.

This money grubbing trend, DLC, DRM, On-disc DLC, Microtransactions, using REAL money as in game currency (Diablo, sigh...)

I see it getting much worse before it gets any better, if it ever gets better at ALL.

So far, only my 3DS has that true old school gaming feel. Buy the game, get all the content on it right from the box, I don't have to pay to get power-ups or extra levels. Great games too.

My point is that for this to cripple them to the point where things start to look bleak for their future as console developers, it would have to be a colossal failure along the lines of the Virtual Boy, and then even that still wouldn't be enough. 2 or 3 failures of that magnitude in a row? Maybe.

But even in the worst case scenario, Wii U will outsell the Gamecube.

Have you heard of the 3DS?

I'm not sure if you've been paying attention to anything going on, but Nintendo had to give it a price-cut and sell it for a loss. Since then it has been a major success, and they expect to return to profits this year.

it sounds like Nintendo is not gonna be heavy into the dlc/drm/microtransactions thing

someone posted a recap of their stockholder meeting or something like that where they said they didn't think those things were good ways of building long term positive relationships with their customer base

if you hate the way the rest of the game industry is going I would think you'd be all up and for the Wii U.

Iwata didn't say that about DLC altogether, just about rip-off DLC like Capcom. They still want to do DLC, but with the view of it being used to extend a game's lifespan.

As you know, all of my remarks and explanations on our digital business are kept and made available for public viewing on our IR site inside Nintendo’s official website. Unfortunately, as some people seem to have a misunderstanding, I would like to once again sum up my comments here. First, we clearly distinguish digital distribution of packaged software from add-on content and, when it comes to making packaged software digitally available, we do not intend to offer any products that the consumers deem incomplete. Second, we sell add-on content so that the consumers can play a software title for even longer and on a deeper level and, when we sell this add-on content, we are making a proposal to consumers to pay for the content our developers have additionally created. In other words, as we have repeatedly confirmed, Nintendo has never conducted and will never conduct what is now widely known (in Japan) as a “gacha-type charging business” (capsule toy vending machine business), which asks consumers to pay money without knowing what kind of item shall emerge as a result of their payment, even if such a business model might temporarily yield high profitability. Nintendo does not believe such a business model can establish long-lasting relationships with our consumers. We hope that everyone understands our policy, and we will continue to make efforts to avoid such misunderstandings as, “the next ‘Animal Crossing’ might be a game which relies upon add-on content sales.”

The point is that they obviously weren't doing something right. If they don't fix that, their bucket is going to start filling.

In addition to what Jakyl said you have to remember that the Wii is at the end of its lifecycle and has crazy market share that there aren't many people left in the last year who wanted a Wii and didn't have one (which is inevitable with any system). So it brought in less revenue than any prior year. This is combined with high R&D costs attributed to the creation and design of the Wii U means they are going to lose money.

As an accountant I am not at all worried about a big loss in a transition year. It happens. Every company loses money eventually; it is inevitable. If they don't then they are cooking the books (in which case they are losing money they are just hiding it)

Every time Nintendo reveals a new console:

"IT'S OVER NINTENDO IS FINISHED"

One year later:

"IT PRINTS MONEY!"

The only time everyone was sure Nintendo would dominate was when they showed the Gamecube, and we all know how that went.

Now shut up. I'll be buying a Wii U this fall.
