Interested in what public perception of the character seems to be.
I'm not gonna mock you or correct you or tell you why you're wrong about what you think of him or anything, because the whole point is to see what people think who don't read Supes, not inform them about him. From: tereziWright | #001 He's a character who has tapped out. The well of stories you can draw from Superman is actually pretty rich, but the issue is that they're better suited to long novels that can spend lots of time on internal monologues, motivations, and small talk than comic books. He's a character who doesn't really work on his medium, because his good stories rely on addressing philosophical and ethical issues that arise from having such immense powers for the most part, and less on action and eye-candy. Comics (mostly) can't balance the need to include action and a fast-moving plot with the sort of delicate, profound treatment of t he issues of humanity and power Superman needs. So, he ends up being boring. Contrast with Batman and other less powerful (or more proportionately powered compared to their enemies) heroes, who can afford to include lots of action that doesn't rely on random nerfing of the character's powers, stupidity, or flimsy justifications of holding back. PS: For example, if Superman started killing for good reason and with lasting effects (AKA no resurrections until at least 10 IRL years pass, knows enough to keep this meting out of justice to irredeemable villains and so on), that'd be a character arc that could be explored to great effect. Because of the medium he's in though, this can't really happen. -- Twostuck, Homestuck RPG: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/62168402 ... Copied to Clipboard!

Generic powers, mostly. He's all-around perfect except for one very specific weakness. Instead of excelling by pushing one aspect of himself to the extreme (like The Flash's speed or Batman's planning), he's just... everything. I like characters who have extreme flaws to overcome.

well I read comics, but not DC, so I guess I'll answer.
His concept is not immediately appealing, but I know that like many others that at first glance may seem generic or uninspired, a good writer can make them a good character. Lots of characters that get labeled as generic or boring, like cyclops or captain america, I find to be some of my favorites. I never really was a big fan of the Superman films, but I did really like the way he was handled in the earlier seasons of Smallville (i have only seen the early ones, so no idea about the rest). -- http://img.imgcake.com/newaccountjpget.jpg ... I wouldn't say I'm a "comic person" but I have read through Green Lantern up through Blackest Night and I pick up the occasional trade. Before I started reading anything, I thought Superman was boring, just a boyscout paladin. Now I'm ok with him. I wouldn't put him in my top 10 or anything, but I wouldn't watch an episode of Justice League and feel like "oh... a Superman episode..."
As for Marvel, I know a lot less about him and he seems like he's essentially my previous perception of Superman, but I doubt that's true. -- http://i.imgur.com/PKIy7.gif ... Copied to Clipboard!

Drak kind of sums up my thoughts. I really don't like Superman. I mean, I understand why he exists and how it's appealing, but it just feels very boring. I feel like there's potential to Superman's character, too. I don't really know much about comicbooks, but all the movies seem to be considered from "so-so" to "awful" and I never hear about "Oh, here's this great Superman comic series."
As for Captain Marvel, I know very little of him. I know he goes SHAZAM! and that makes him get his powers. Is he supposed to be completely over the top? Because if so, I think they did a pretty good job on that. If not, "whoops". -- Rank 9, Dr. Peace?
