Yeh S1>S2 for me so far. S2 has had its moments, but still much preferred S1.

I should also point out I'm basically comparing full S1 to current S2, so it's not really a fair fight yet. I do think S2 will have to step up a bit to come out ahead, but yesterday's episode definitely showed it can do this. Plus, in the end, I usually come out thinking most of the changes are about a draw, if not better than, the books, so more time for me to watch how the changes unfold will also likely help it out.

If I had to compare S1 to S2, S1 is better so far.

If I had to compare S1 first 5 episodes to S2 first 5 episodes, I probably pick S2.

So now we just need to see how much this season picks up in the second half.

Yeah.

Up to this point, Season 2 is better than Season 1. We've had SO MANY MOMENTS and we still have the Build Up/Penultimate/Finale.

The conversations and dialogue have been so damn good.

Also, dirty, bearded Jaime>clean cut Jaime

I think Season 1 overall was better than what we've seen so far, if only because it seemed more like a coherent whole rather than chunks of various plots put together. Some individual scenes in S2 are ridiculously good (Arya/Tywin, I'm looking at you. Also some Tyrion stuff), but on the whole, it's a bit messy.

On the other hand, ACoK is much harder to adapt than AGoT, so I don't hold it against the writers, who continue to astound me with the quality of the show.

I agree with whoever said Arya was S2's MVP, btw. I really hope Maisie Williams gets nominated for an Emmy (even if she won't win, just the nom would be great).

She is every bit as good as Tyrion Season 1.

He just got more hype because he's a midget throwing out witty quips and everyone loves that kinda stuff.

Arya Stark carrying scenes with Tywin is like when Sally Draper goes head to head with Roger Sterling and shines. For a young girl to pull that off takes such skill.

She went God Mode the second she become his servant.

I feel like Jon Snow is under-rated as a character and actor. As a character he stands for every lost or confused kid who signed up for wars and pledged their allegiance to a cause they knew nothing about; they just knew they weren't alone anymore. As an actor he plays the part with such subtlety that you forget he's acting, that he's not some lost young man looking for a place in the world. THAT is the sign of a good actor, when they can make you forget they're doing it.

He doesn't have a plethora to work with but always manages to amaze me with what they give him. Then on episodes like this and the last, when he gets major scenes, he just kills every one of them. His dialogue is gruff but filled with purpose, his shame and fear and honesty are palpable across his face, I cringe every time he's put in an uncomfortable position or logic is thrown in his face because the truth is that he's perfectly suited for the wall. He's not as wise as Robb, as clever as Arya, as Courageous as Bran, or even as ambitious as Theon. He is a walking sword with ideals that are not his own.

I know I said this before but with the first seven episodes:

1. 2>1
2. 2>1
3. 2>1
4. 2>1
5. 1>2
6. 2>1
7. 1>2

Season 2 is winning.

seems like they haven't been around in a while

if stannis is literally less than a week from invading king's landing shouldn't they be focusing on him a bit? i feel like you could have missed tyrion's line and would be all confused when all of a sudden stannis is outside the gates after being MIA for four eps

It was like that in the book, as well. You have a sudden silence around Stannis, so all you know are updates in each of Tyrion's chapters as he prepares the defenses. I quite like that technique, as it intensifies the wait for the oncoming assault.

Pretty good episode. While not much going on, there's a few poignant moments, Theon and Yara's conversation coming to mind. Other exchanges were amusing, such as Tyrion/Bronn and most certainly Jaime/Brienne. It's definitely slower than last week's episode, but I'm sure that's to set up things for next week's ep. 1. I'm glad Gleeson sees Joffrey the same way I do. His corny line tonight about Stannis' smile is similar to Commodis play fighting with paid actors and pretending to be sorrowful at missing war. The character archetype is my personal favorite because it forces you as the viewer to understand rather than judge. We know Joffrey's comeuppance is coming and we are all going to cheer because that's what we do. But I won't cheer. I'll be upset because his mother should pay for his sins much like Marcus Aurelius paid for his.

2. Typical HBO build up episode. The anticipation is at it's precipice and next weeks episode is going to be legendary. I'm talking last 30 minutes of Two Towers stuff.

3. If o have one criticism of Season 2 it's that they are forced to drag Dany and Jon Snow's stories out. These characters are ones whose spotlight is coming later on but they don't want you to forget about them. It's not their faults persay, the television audience can barely sustain multiple arcs without losing themselves so it serves as a drawback to something readers of fantasy novels have come to expect.

Authors have a higher respect for their readers but readers return the favor by deserving it.

3. Lastly, even in a build up episode Game managed convey a message. Don't die so far from home. It was Yara's message to Theon but it worked for everyone. Jon Snow and his captain literally dying so far from a home which ironically was once theirs. Robb Stark so far from the home he wants both literally and Choice wise. Dany and Jorah so far from where they want to live Varys and Tyrion so afraid of Losing their earned power in a fight of fists so far home from their battle of wits.

There's Ros the whore, Jaime and The Big Girl, Caitlyn Stark, Arya and her peeps, everyone is farm from home, in either form or spirit, and trying to get back.

Uhhhhh what? Season 2s highlights have been the dialogue.

Every episode has this crazy exposition or character building diatribe that leaves you blown away.

If you mean charming, albeit overly excessive witty dialogue between the Games clever characters then yes, scenes like that have taken a back seat.

Uhhhhh what? Season 2s highlights have been the dialogue.

Both seasons have had this as the highlight. If you asked me for my favorite scenes over both seasons, they'd be almost entirely, if not entirely, dialogue scenes.

Arya and Tywin's scenes have been by far the best part of Season 2 for me.

However, yes, I was specifically singling scenes like Littlefinger/Varys (S1) out. Tyrion has pretty much been the sole provider of those in S2, but he's been far outclassing most of his "opponents" in those conversations. Varys is one of a handful who can hold up their end just as well, if not better.

I didn't mention it because I feel like there's nothing more to say about Arya that I have t already said.

But I guess I can throw one more:

Game of Thrones ability to humanize antagonists and demonize protagonists until everyone loses title and just take their place as people is the greatest part of The show.

Arya is not a good guy. She is Tywin in child form. His village burning and mass murdering seems eerily humane during his conversations with Arya where he just seems like a wise old man regaling his life's choices. Arya's seems like the good guy ofthe duo until you see her willing to kill Jacquen without any emotion what so ever. Then you remember that she's done nothing to deserve her good guy status other than being a young girl who acts like a tomboy.

She does show flashes of heroism, even on minor levels - saving Gendry by saying they'd killed the owner of the bull helm, saving Jaqen and the other 2 when they were trapped in the burning cage, taking Gendry and Hot Pie with her for her escape, and so on.

The more I think about it, the more you might actually be right in some ways. I was fooled by the show into thinking she is a good guy. I can't figure out if her main motives are to just get back home, or to seek out vengeance.

I do not, however, think she is a bad guy . She turned around to save the captives during that fire, after all.

I agree with Realo, the show does a great job of presenting the idea that there really are no "good guys", just people with different motivations. It's hard to look at anyone as evil when the reasons for their actions are presented so well. It may seem as though it's easy to cast the Lannisters as being evil and the Starks as good, but when you listen to Tywin and Cersei's conversations in season 2 it's clear that they're both just trying to protect the things that they care about, Cersei her children, and Tywin his name. Even the Wildlings who were shown to be somewhat faceless villains as the series began are now shown to have humanity and it appears they may even be in the right as they kill rangers from the Night's Watch.

Everyone has different reasons for making the choices they do, and it's hard to judge any of the characters as being right or wrong in any given situation.

Most characters in the series are in shades of grey; even Ned fathered a bastard. I'm trying to think of characters that are purely good. Jon, Bran, and I guess Hodor seem to fit the bill, though Hodor's the only one I would be surprised to see partially corrupted!

That said, I think it's fair to say that Tywin is eviler than Arya; she wants to go home and she wants revenge, but Tywin is driven by greed.
