Somehow, you can pay your employees f***ing peanuts and have your customers pick up the slack, and if we tell you no, it's the employees that you're running ragged that get upset at me for calling you out. It's a pretty sweet operation if you're into slave labor.

Tipping was obviously better when they made wages, and you tipped because someone did a good job, not their job. However, it is the world we live in now, and if you have money to go out to eat, you damn well better tip because that is how they make their living now. It is a broken and awful system, but one which no one plans on doing anything about anytime soon.

But I also wish we were like other countries, and were never expected to tip.

This. I remember being told specifically not to tip in Australia, because waiters/waitresses actually get paid a decent wage. I'm sure that wage is at least minimum wage, rather than being paid under minimum wage like in the United States.

Tipping is an amazing system. This is all that I know from topics about tipping and from the play Nickel and Dimed rather than actual research, but I've heard that the tips allow restaurants to pay people less than minimum wage. If they can't get the tips needed to make their hourly wage the minimum wage, then the restaurant needs to pay the difference. Of course, the employees will suffer because they just became more expensive. The other thing is that apparently, it's not even just the waiters and waitresses that need to get tipped - the cooks also need to get tipped by those waiters and waitresses. In theory, if all customers were to not tip, everyone would end up getting paid what they are supposed to get paid anyway. It's just so much part of the culture now that you have to tip. Worse, I have heard that tipping is starting to be expected for takeout.

I don't know how true all that is, but from what I understand, the restaurant industry is pretty screwed up.

I was a waiter for 7 years, through my last 2 years of high school, all of college, all of grad school, and I loved it and I loved tips. If you're good at your job, you don't often get bad tips and when you do, it's usually not your fault. Not always, of course, everyone has tables that they make mistakes at.

"Ignoring problems make them go away."

the entire basis of capitalism is that if something sucks people will not buy it

another thing you could do, many of these restaurants have surveys that ask how you feel about them. if enough people mentioned they liked the restaurant but did not like tipping, they would probably change it. but a lot of people do like the system. my personal view is that if I am going to be served rather than allowed to serve myself, I would prefer a system of tipping based on the quality of service to higher prices, though I prefer places without servers as I do not like being waited on.

You don't have to eat out. I eat virtually every meal at my house and am much healthier for it. Besides, some people can even eat at fast food quite often and still be thin if you exercise often and don't overdo it.

Theoretically, but so few people actually pay based on service as opposed to just mindlessly paying a flat rate that could either be good or bad.

I semi-pay based on service.

Like my base tip is 15% and I never go lower, but I often go higher if the service is good.

Maybe I should alter that, but then again I never had a bad waitress.

%-based tipping is often dumb. Does a plate worth $20 really take twice as much effort to serve than a plate worth $10? If a plate is worth $20, but the restaurant has a 50% off deal so it only costs $10, does the server deserve less for serving the same exact plate?

I rarely tip less than 15%, but I had one server a few weeks back who left me so flabbergasted that I couldn't tip her well.

My favorite story is after I paid with my credit card, she came back with the slip, declared "I don't have a pen." and walked away. My first thought is she was going to be back with a pen, but no. I'm not sure how she expected me to fill in the tip & sign. I had to go to the bartender and ask to his pen.

Quite often, yes. A $20 plate is more likely to include salad/soup, bread, things of that nature, which does require more effort than bringing a sandwich with fries and nothing extra.

If a plate is worth $20, but the restaurant has a 50% off deal so it only costs $10, does the server deserve less for serving the same exact plate?

No. Tipping is based off of the total of the check before discounts.

Well, it's a silly point. Serving at expensive restaurants gets you larger tips per table. That's the way it works. Same way that if McDonald's had servers that you were supposed to tip, they'd make next to nothing.

The flip side of it is that the more expensive restaurants get less tables per night, so even though they make more per table, a server at a middle of the line price restaurant (i.e. Applebee's) can still make roughly the same because of volume.
