idk, guess I need some more conflict in my life! My answer would probably lean SNES, but I'd be willing to take on less-popular consoles like the N64 and Genesis.

Depends: are we including backwards compatibility? Seems a little unfair, especially given this means the PC would utterly dominate. If not, then the PS2 hardly wins by a landslide!

I don't count BC at all when I say PS2 and not particularly close.

The SNES is a great system but it lacks true variety and pound for pound, game for game, the PS2 is just better.

We'll certainly need to distinguish between BC ratings and non-BC ratings. For the purposes of this discussion, I'll be assuming non-BC unless otherwise stated.

The SNES is a great system but it lacks true variety and pound for pound, game for game, the PS2 is just better.

Let's narrow the comparison down to specific genres. The SNES's two strongest areas are typically agreed upon to be a) platformers, and b) RPGs; this includes a strong aRPG and sRPG lineup as well as its notoriously huge jRPG library. Do you believe that the PS2's strongest games in these categories fare well, or does it depend on other genres (action/shooter/etc.) to win out?

Well, we've got... whatever the good Wild Arms and Suikodens are, Dragon Quest 8, SMT out the wazoo, and that's not even considering FF. We've got plenty of ARPGs like Dark Cloud and Kingdom Hearts, Star Ocean 3 and several Tales ofs. For SRPGs, there are two Disgaeas and other less mainstream stuff. In terms of platformers we have Sly, R&C and Jak off the top of my head. And let's bring up a good genre for PS2: 3D Action games. Devil May Cry, God of War, God Hand, and in the action-adventure direction Okami. As a subgenre we have the GTAs and their ilk. Horror, we've got all kinds of stuff. Silent Hill, RE, and Fatal Frame. Onimusha is also somewhere in between horror and action. There are 3 of them.

that might change if we count ports. like if we're counting SF3: Third Strike and CvS2 and Sonic Mega Collection and Capcom Classics Collection as PS2 games then PS2 would obviously win. Also if you count stuff like that, the Wii becomes one of the best consoles ever.

Well, we've got... whatever the good Wild Arms and Suikodens are, Dragon Quest 8, SMT out the wazoo, and that's not even considering FF.

Dragon Quest VIII gets trumped by DQV and VI; two quality SMT games exist on the Super Famicom (maybe more, but I haven't played them), although they're a little dated today; FFX, XI, and XII are pretty roundly trumped by IV/V/VI. One RPG you didn't mention for the PS2 is BoFIV, although that's arguably beaten by I + II.

On top of all of this, you have Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Lufia I + II, Super Mario RPG, and several others I'm probably forgetting. Feels like the SNES has a comfortable lead in the jRPG department.

We've got plenty of ARPGs like Dark Cloud and Kingdom Hearts, Star Ocean 3, Ys 6 and several Tales ofs.

Not sure how well this fares against Star Ocean 1, Seiken Densetsu II/III, Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma, Tales of Phantasia, and Evermore. There are even lesser-known gems like EVO and Popful Mail which are worth considering.

For SRPGs, there are two Disgaeas and other less mainstream stuff.

This is actually one of the SNES's strongest genres, as the titles on the PS2 don't even come close to Fire Emblems 3/4/5, Treasure Hunter G, Ogre Battle/Tactics Ogre, and Bahamut Lagoon.

In terms of platformers we have Sly, R&C and Jak off the top of my head.

Any more worth noting? Because the SNES's platforming library is... quite the juggernaut, honestly.

Prince of Persia, which beats anything SNES has by quite a bit. And this is coming from someone who holds the DKC trilogy as the pinnacle of 2D platforming.

How did I forget this? Silly Westbrick!

The thing is, even if we were to agree that PoP represents the best of the platforming genre between the two systems (and I'd hesitate to go this far; I've got DKC2 and Kirby Superstar looking over my shoulder), I believe that determining system quality also involves quantity. The SNES has an absolutely ridiculous lineup of quality platforming titles, including...

Super Mario World 1 + 2
Super Mario All-Stars
Donkey Kong Country trilogy
Kirby Superstar / Dreamland 3
Mega Man X trilogy, 7, Rockman & Forte

...and then there are all the borderline action/platforming titles, like the two Castlevanias, Contra III, Super Star Wars trilogy, etc.

I just can't see the PS2 lineup winning out here, no matter how good Jak/Ratchet/PoP may be.

Definitely, and I can totally agree with SNES being superior for platformers than PS2, but the fact is that PS2 is pretty much 2nd in existence for platformers, AND it's like #1 in action games by far, #1 or 2 in RPGs, etc.

Platforming is one of the areas where Genesis and SNES are fairly close, I'll agree. Sparkster is actually almost as good as RKA, so there's an alternative. You also didn't mention Mega Man: Wily Wars, which is incredibly fun despite the hit-and-miss music. Plus, if you think about it, it's 4 (3.5 really) games in one, making it comparable to the SNES Mega Man library.

What really ends the Genesis/SNES comparisons are the RPGs. Strategy, Japanese, Action... you name it, SNES wins it. Though this is certainly a place where quality-over-quantity arguments could be made (I just beat Landstalker/Phantasy Star IV this past week, and holy hot damn), but the sheer number of quality titles makes it hard to side with Sega here.

Genesis obliterates the SNES in terms of shmups, though, so if that's your thing, Genesis > SNES is a possibility. Not a particularly popular position in my experience however!

I'm beginning to realize that I'm less informed than I'd like to be about the PS2 library, and since many good posters are already sold on the PS2 (and I'd like to keep the discussion going!), why don't we just table the system until later? Basically a "runner-up" conversation (although my intuitions lean SNES, so we may revisit this later, idk).

This Westbrick dude is pretty chill, who invited him here?

Ha, thanks. Semi-longtime lurker actually. Came during one of the contests, got some great game recommendations (this board has good taste), and decided to keep tabs. By the way, that's what this topic is: a poorly-concealed game recommendation / debate topic!
