Note: This is a first draft.

It's like going to the movie theater and buying the ticket for the movie you want to see, and then as you're heading in, there's a guy working for the theater there who tells you that, for an extra $10 per ticket, you can upgrade your tickets and see "bonus scenes" throughout the movie featuring appearances by star actors, and that the reason it costs extra is because these scenes weren't filmed using the budget for the film itself.

Pretty good analogy. But luckily since DLCs are usually skippable, ha I mean take Mass Effect's characters for example, it'd be more like extra scenes with cast members of Saved By The Bell fame.

The popcorn isn't made by the film makers. The film's budget isn't tied in to popcorn at all. It's a terrible analogy.

Likewise, the seats at the theater have nothing to do with the film makers.

Are you denying that overpriced popcorn is a staple source of income for theaters?

Analogies only work so far, it'd be easy to take anything you suggest and argue against it based on details. On the general level, popcorn works, though.

...yeah i can't see the popcorn one work. mainly because everyone sneaks food in and really most theaters don't care. it also doesn't really relate to the movie itself, just a separate entity. DLC is directly connected to the game, popcorn isn't directly connected to movies.

and i assume this is for on disc DLC and the like. if you want a movie theater analogy, i'd sooner use what they already have in place: you can buy a regular ticket, a ticket to imax, or a ticket to imax 3D. the movie comparison meanwhile would be if by purchasing a ticket to imax 3d, you would get a more uncut version of the film. it'll all be available down the road for DVD and Blu-Ray in a separate purchase (much like how some GOTY packs come and the like), however if you don't want to wait, it's there.

You don't need to buy popcorn to enjoy the entirety of the movie. You don't need to buy DLC to enjoy the entirety of the game.

Some people say that popcorn/DLC is a worthy investment to improve the experience of the movie/game, but there's a reason it's optional. If it really was so important to the experience, then it would be included with the movie/game.

if we're including all DLC then nah, oftentime there will be DLC that makes a huge improvement on a game. these are some that are basically expansion packs and can make a very notable difference.

other times you have stuff like PoP where its epilogue was DLC. console only DLC too.

on disc stuff for the most part won't hit that field as often it's just minor stuff like weapons, costumes, or things you can unlock yourself. capcom's pushing that boundary though - for any game, but a fighter especially, to field a third of its roster in DLC is just crazy. characters in a fighting game are a pretty big deal and while a couple makes sense, it's really just bad practice to cut so much out there.

In the worst-case scenario

It's like going to the movie theater and buying the ticket for lord of the rings, and then as you're heading in, there's a guy working for the theater there who tells you that, for an extra $10 per ticket, you can see the scenes that don't have frodo in them and that the reason it costs extra is because these scenes weren't filmed using the budget for the film itself.

Actually, then they reveal that the $10 only revealed the scenes that don't have frodo but DO have aragorn, and it's $10 each to reveal the scenes with gandalf, pippen, gollum, etc.

In the best case scenario

It's like going to the movie theater, buying a ticket, and then as you're heading in, there's a guy working for the theater there who tells you that you can see the version of the movie with more special effects for $10 more. (i.e. imax)

There are things that are debatable about the merit of the popcorn analogy, but the big thing that's not debatable about that analogy is that it's better than the incoherent mess that yours is, even if it's less accurate.

Your analogy, even if it works, misses the whole point of analogies in that they're meant to make things more clear not less.
