As for Order of Ecclesia, I have no idea why people hate it. It has the smoothest and most gratifying action of any Castlevania, it has the decency to kick your ass once in a while unlike the last few Castlevanias, fun weapon system, great music, last section of the game is really awesome. I have no complaints about it.

OoE's bosses were the worst I've ever played in a CV game and most were literally a 10-15 second pattern you had to avoid getting hit by 3 or 4 times (Virtually every boss kills you in 5 or less hits, even the early ones) over a ridiculously drawn out fight because their hp is way too high.

They weren't hard. Just incredibly long.

The only boss in OoE that I really do hate is the giant crab thing that chases you up the tower. I have no idea what they were thinking on that one. Every other boss in OoE is completely fine, in my opinion.

I think SotN is maybe a little overrated! I mean, it's still great, but I played it after most of the GBA/DS Castlevanias and it does nothing to really wow me.

That was the worst one time-wise probably, but it was also possibly the only boss in the game that doesn't 4-shot kill or worse, even if its pattern is *usually* just as mindlessly simple.

Different boss styles appeal to different people I guess. Personally I can't even remember any bosses from SotN aside from Galamoth, for instance... they all roll over and die after doing almost no damage whatsoever. OoE's bosses have more of a Mega Man X feel, and for me at least, that's a very good thing.

I also didn't find any of the fights super-long, not sure what's going on there. You can usually unload lots of damage quickly using the right weapons when bosses give you an opening.

So what do you want?

Boss fights that last 1 minute but use attacks you can't dodge but do so pitiful damage that you can't even die unless you try?

I'd rather have longer boss fights where dodging actually matters.

The problem is its all one gigantic pattern.

Most bosses have absolutely no deviation from their pattern whatsoever. So its all one giant exercise in sheer monotony because you're repeating the exact same thing every 15-20 seconds, and most of them turn into "Do the same pattern to the exact letter and second 20+ times because anything else gets you hit".

The boss fights were agonizingly boring and repetitive. I remember most that frakenstein like giant who I think could 3 shot me. It was "Don't screw up doing the exact same thing every few seconds 3 times in 6 minutes"

It is when the entire fight is the exact same thing in one continuous loop. It gets boring by then.

But yeah I never knew people actually liked this game. Its HoD-tier to me.

The game being liked isn't just a B8 thing, for the record.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/ds/945837-castlevania-order-of-ecclesia

Anyway, as someone who has medalled all the bosses on Hard Mode, I can assure you the bosses are not 100% patterned. They, like most platforming bosses, have a few different attacks they can use and choose which one somewhat randomly. Do you have to learn how to dodge each attack, and react accordingly whenever you see each one being used? Well... yeah. That's kinda the point. Yes, the frankenstein monster can 3-shot you with his better damage (punching the ground, the huge explosion... both of which have a large windup; his other moves do less). That means you get to make 2 mistakes. If you want to use items you can make a few more. This means you will fight the boss until you're actually knowledgeable about how to beat him, and you won't just trade hits and win by luck. That seems... entirely reasonable and in fact pretty much what I want out of a platformer boss.

Castlevania (The first one is actually really good. Everything in it is an actual obstacle worth your full attention. It's great)
Aria of Sorrow
Symphony of the Night

I totally forgot what I was writting there for a second. SoN top tier, CotM bad for castlevania therefor still great anyways tier.

in fact Circle of the Moon is the worst

bosses are uninspiring, powerups are boring things like "tackle" and "jump really clumsily off walls," the castle is a pain to get around (only 5 warps and one isn't even near anything), bland story with characters that are nearly impossible to like, DSS stuff is mostly terrible with a few minor exceptions (and just getting some of the cards is obnoxious)

Harmony of Dissonance is a far superior game and I'll never understand all the hate it gets

As unpopular as I'm sure this opinion is, I agree with it fully. The DDS system was bizarre- seriously, the core gameplay mechanic comes from random drops?- and the dark aesthetic ended up making everything bland (not to mention difficult to see on a vanilla GBA). HoD isn't a masterpiece, or anything, but it's not the weakest of the GBA trilogy.

Anyway, my list:
Order
Symphony
Aria
Dawn
Castlevania III

I honestly don't get complaints about this. I prefer it hugely over holding a button to run. And I think it works well for CotM's mechanics and physics, which are designed around two movement speeds.

Also, no one complains about double-tap to run in Kirby games. >_>

My list:
1. CotM
2. DoS
3. OoE
4. AoS
5. SotN

God I want another portable Castleroid/Metroidvania already; having nothing since OoE/Zero Mission is killing me, especially since I only currently own Portrait of Ruin and Fusion. Fusion being a game I've played through a million times already that's inferior to Zero Mission for repeated plays, and PoR being the easiest to get burned out on due to an uninteresting castle and the portrait worlds getting recycled, making it even more painful to play through repeatedly. And the alternate characters/modes available in PoR suck compared to OoE/DoS'.

I think that's where the fault is; it's not >the< core gameplay mechanic. It's not like AoS or DoS where souls are central to everything. What makes CotM good is the fact that the traditional whip+sub-weapons are still the core of your arsenal, just like in the original Castlevania. The DDS system only supplements your weapons in most circumstances, rather than replacing them.
