In terms of lifetime sales though I am assuming its the Wii but when you look at it over the span of all the consoles lifetimes, it seems as if there were three main phases. The first being the Wii stage where everyone was going "oh motion sense gaming is amazing, mmmm I love nintendo, gimme some of that mario." Then we had the 360 stage where it appeared that the 360 was maybe the best console for gamers of this generation. Now most recently, it appears that the PS3 may end up on top at the end of it.
I dont have any of the actual sales in front of me but I believe the Wii is still killing it from its boom and I believe the 360 and PS3 are pretty close.

If you're judging it on system sales (like how every other generation was judged) then the Wii wins. Also it continues the trend of the most technically inferior console winning each generation (for the last few cycles at least) which is kind of interesting!
Well if we look at sheer influence, then the PS3 is dead last. It's the Gamecube of this generation. Didn't really do anything new, just kind of continued what its predecessor did but with more horsepower (and fewer games), kinda screwed itself over with technical issues, etc.
Of course, if we judge clearly by games, then all are great. I have no preference. All have their own niches, and while I have my problems with this generation, it's the only one where you can't lose no matter which console you pick. But as far as "winning" the generation goes in terms of effect on the industry, the Wii won it for the first few years then the 360 won for the last couple. PS3 never entered the equation. It's not a bad system, far from it, just kind of irrelevant. It's like, you could remove the PS3 entirely and the shape of gaming wouldn't change much.

The problem is, for every person that says 'lol PS3' you have a person who'd say 'lol 360', although maybe not on this site.
Personally, I'd say 360. I've got a PS3 and I use it to play exclusives which are all brilliant, but everything else I play on my 360. I prefer the controller, the dashboard and the online on the 360.
So, let's just say the Wii based on sales. It's easier.

Speaking strictly of consoles, it'd either be the Xbox or the Wii. The PS3 languished in limbo for far too long. I'm honestly shocked that in the last few months it seems like way more people on the site seem to be touting a PS3 than anything else considering how absolutely horrid Sony did during the first few years of this cycle. (Lest we forget, the system debuted at $600, and initially had almost no games you couldn't get for the 360 that came out a year ahead. UC2, LBP, and...?)

I was reluctant to put PS3 as a winner at all since almost everyone I know has a Wii and Xbox360. If anything, I could say that PS3 users were rare, but I thought: Nah, forget it. Yo homes, to Bel-Air!
Yeah, "winning" is just a sales thing - ie. Wii gets this generation. I mean I adore my Gamecube, but it doesn't change the fact that it came dead last. Winner =/= best/favourite console.
Although, in America at least, I'm pretty sure the 360 is going to outsell the Wii. I mean the Wii is over now and has been for some time, but 360 sales are still going incredibly strong and it's not far behind. Which is interesting because globally it's probably going to become last place.

This gen was actually defined by Motion control, as 4 of the 5 consoles had some form of it (and honestly, LOL PSP, that 300 dollar paperweight). Unfortunately for 2 of the consoles, they realized it way too late to compete.

That is not what I said. It was still a current gen console, it just did not have what actually defined this gen yet, hence it had no chance whatsover at the Wii, and it also why the DS absolutely and utter god stomped the PSP (well one of the reasons, there were many)
if you'd vote for the 360 or PS3, you'd have to give it to the PC. It had a significant amount of the important titles those consoles had, often in better versions and cheaper. This gen was the gen of Steam.
I guess if you want to just say "whoever sold the most consoles won" then you give it to the Wii but in terms of impact with people who play games often, PC was the story this gen, powered by Steam.
that's how it's been for me personally, I started using steam back in september and I'm now pretty sure I'm done with consoles, most of the important sony/MS games come out on PC and metroid prime is basically the only thing nintendo has done right in the past decade.
nintendo's the clear winner in most objective categories. they wrecked face this gen. 360 however is the biggest success story - a newcomer to the market in 2 consoles became 2nd.
sony's the flop story, after coming from the ps2. none of the consoles are bad and all have a couple dozen games worth playing. thing is all but a handful are the difference between 360 and ps3, so... yeah. that's only gonna get worse.

The handhelds won this generation. Even if you are asking consoles only. The DS and PSP had much better games, made much more profit for their companies, and imo did more to influence the future of gaming than any console did, including the wii and its motion controls.
The future of "console" gaming is something that has the portability of a handheld, and that you can plug into your home television if you wanna play it on a big screen.

as much as I dislike the wii, the DS is overhyped to all hell, it does not have better games wtf? unless you count all the ports...(and even then the wii has the same ports in VC)
i will admit a lot of the DS's great library is ports, but it also has remakes back when people still wanted their N64 games on the go. The DS and PSP also killed the consoles in RPGs not of the western variety and adventure games this gen.
The only genres 2 of the 3 consoles did this gen were pretty much FPSs and WRPGs.

expecting some hybrid handheld/console is where we're going yeah. DS i'll give you having better games, but not psp. ds took a nice spot as 2nd best system of all time for me, dat library so good. still, the sales on those things are monsterous. ds killed everyone else, then wii, then.... i think psp is 3rd.

what RPGs? TWEWY was hyped as **** and it was one of the worst games I've ever played. radiant historia looks interesting and it's getting a reprint but I haven't played it yet...
the wii actually did really well with platformers, probably the best console for platformers since SNES
most of the ds' best games sure as hell ain't ports or remakes. that's the psp's front. ds for te most part shines on its own without earlier systems' games. the biggest ports on it are probably dragon quest games that we never got stateside anyway. >_>;

There isn't a winner this gen. This time it was all about the loser. And that loser is quite possibly the worst "legitimate" system in history, the Nintendo Wii. And don't get me wrong, I own one and had some great times with it, but lets not kid ourselves. The Wiimote, friend codes, terrible third party games, the Wiimote...just everything. well the wii did make more money, of course. But when it comes to influencing the future generations, I think the handhelds this gen did that way more than the consoles. Console gaming is coming to a close. Hybrid systems are the future. There is a lot more improvement to be made in the hardware capabilities of handheld systems right now. A PC in the late 90s went from high tier to mid tier in about a year. We are seeing that type of situation right now with phones. The first quad core phones are supposedly coming out soon, and how long have we had dual core phones? Since late 2010?
