I agree that the vast majority of that was warranted, and if she wants luxuries like that she needs to find a way to pay for them herself, but IIRC employment options for 15-year-olds are fairly limited, aren't they?

What she was going through seemed fairly typical for a teenage girl. I'd say he was WAY overblowing this.

Already saw how huge an argument this got on LUE, so I'm gonna call this topic quits right now.

Meh, it was a second offense. She had the chance to learn her lesson.

I would never MAKE my high-school aged kid get a job during the school year, and I would still give them a modest allowance for doing their chores (like maybe $20 a week), but I would definitely tell them that if they want luxury items beyond what they can save up for that way and with birthdays and Christmas that it's on them to find a way to pay for them.

I meant from a legal standpoint. Maybe it varies by state, but here in Michigan (at least when I was a teenager), you had to be 16 to legally get most part-time jobs, with a scant few exceptions.

what kind of moron shoots a laptop that he paid for and then spent over $100 on software for. You could just as easily take the thing away forever, or sell it, or do something other than waste all that money. Idiot.

I was entertained.

Typical teenage stuff? Yeah, to a point, but girl went a little over the top, it was a repeat offense, and she thought she could hide it from an IT professional who likes to brandish firearms. The dad talked about what he did when he was "her age," so honestly other expectations kinda go out the window when you know the perspective of the parent.

This seems to suggest that 14 and 15 year olds can work under some restrictions, mostly dealing with the time of day and the number of hours per week.

Perfectly reasonable as far as achieving his goal.

He wanted to change his daughter's attitude. Nothing gets the point across like breaking s***. I can't imagine his daughter appreciating it very much, but I'm sure she'll end up learning a thing or two down the road.

He didn't tell her to do any of that, but this is verbatim what he said he was doing at her age. Of course there was hyperbole, but I'm more inclined to think he was just an idiot. And the mentality that "Oh this is what my situation was like so this is how you should have it." as a parent is wrong. Your goal as a parent should be to make it so that your children had it easier than you did. Or at least if you're not pathetic it should be. Not that his daughter doesn't have it easier, but I'm just saying.

False. Your goal as a parent is to ensure your children lead a better life and end up more successful than you did.

Tell me, how is allowing his daughter to go through life being handed everything and acting like a poor thing because she has to do chores accomplishing either of these things?

Nah, they just aren't parents yet. I've seen the way parenthood changes a person. My sister was a bit rebellious in her heyday, and then a working single mom through her 20s. She eventually remarried and had more kids with the new marriage who are now reaching the early stages of teendom. She practically breathes fire at them, and then when I pull her aside and asking her if she's being harsh, she tells me in a completely civil tone that dealing with teenagers and getting them to comply is a very different experience than dealing with people in any other age bracket, especially when you're the parent of said teenager.

I should add, I was a high school teacher for two years, so I understand where she's coming from...to a point.

Yeah, and if she's a total **** who expects things to be handed to her and blows out of proportion every "inconvenience" that is only giving back a tenth part what is given to her, then she isn't well-rounded or capable of living in society...unless she finds a sugardaddy, I suppose.

See that's more about disciplining the animal.

He should have filmed himself dragging his daughter into a wrestling ring and delivering a thunderous RKO.

And then he backs off into the corner, VIPING UP in the process as the crowd stirs in anticipation. As she rises to the prone position, he explodes out of the corner and just as he's about to deliver the punt, he pulls up. The crowd boos in disappointment but he grabs a mic and says "NEXT TIME. I WON'T STOP."
