In the end, this got a positive, constructive response from the daughter, so really this seems like it was a good thing in this particular case no matter how you feel about it in general.

Overall, I have to say he's a great parent. He's setting boundaries and enforcing them and teaching his daughter how important respect is. He's also trying to teach her the value of hard work and how important it is that a person take care of themselves and be responsible.

If this or something like it happened to me as a teenager, I would have been ****ing PISSED. I would have raged so hard. But you know, it's not the parents job to allow a kid their every whim. It's to teach them right from wrong and to be a good, responsible person. If I did something wrong, then something should be done to make sure I understand that and teach me not to do that anymore.

Most of you are saying things like "well teenagers just misbehave, that's what they do, don't get so riled up about it." The thing is, they will continue to misbehave. Until you do something that will make them stop. The dad in that video really pulled that off spectacularly. Do you think she won't appreciate it if she ever get's a laptop again? She won't take all the little toys kids get these days for granted anymore, that's for sure.

There's an argument to be made that he shouldn't have posted it online for everyone to see. That it humiliated the girl in ways she won't recover from. But I think it's clear from the video itself and his subsequent posts that he that he wasn't trying to get internet stardom or anything. He just wanted to get the message through to his daughter about what she did wrong and why she was being punished, and he thought it'd be good for her friends to get that message too. It seems like the girl isn't just socially mortified over it either.

All in all, I think that guy is a great parent and that girl is lucky to have a dad that takes his role seriously. I don't think anyone can dispute that this is a guy that wants the best for his daughter, even if that means punishing her in the short term. If you think that this was just some insecure maniac that got hurt by some mean words and decided to destroy everything this girl holds dear, then I don't think you really got the message of the video. Though I guess maybe the gun helped with that interpretation.

There's my thoughts on the subject.

Well now hold on a second. He DID say:

Do I regret keeping it on Facebook long enough to cause this stir? Yes.

That was one of the main points of contention I and others had with what he did. That and the invasion of privacy aspect, although that one seems to have been okay: the daughter's internet usage was "on probation" from previous offenses, so it was less an invasion of privacy and more not letting her skirt the agreed-upon supervision. She had no reasonable expectation of privacy in this situation, so reading it wasn't an invasion.

All in all the subsequent comments make him come off a lot better than the original video did. I still think the publicization of this was bad, and while he does seem to agree, I think he's downplaying what he's at fault for and skirting responsibility a bit in that way.

Still wouldn't have shot it myself, that's just wasteful. I think it would have been better if he'd donated it. Then it would have done someone some good, the daughter still wouldn't have had it, and he could have snuck in a lesson that you don't always have to stick to what you said you'd do when you said you'd do something stupid.

He just wanted to get the message through to his daughter about what she did wrong and why she was being punished, and he thought it'd be good for her friends to get that message too.

He's not their parent, not his place to do that.

That being said, it's not like the 15 year old was exactly in the right. Shooting the laptop may have been a little extreme, but no doubt she learned a lesson that she'll never forget. So I'd say, mission accomplished.

He seems like a pretty legit dude, just sort of at the end of his rope about how to deal with his daughter. The reaction the two of them had after they went through the comments together makes it hard for me to judge either of the two too harshly. As long as the parents aren't causing any sort of physical or mental abuse, I tend to believe they are good parents, and at the very least it seems to have somewhat worked.

A little lame he posted that on facebook to sort of publicly humiliate her like that, but he seems pretty regretful that the whole world has seen it now, so again I'd give him a pass.

I don't see anything he did as vindictive. It wasn't like this was a surprise. He warned her that further actions such as whatever she did in the past would result in bullet-through-laptop. This was him following through, in an overly dramatic fashion, sure.

I don't fear guns. I was suggesting that I have a gut reaction to people using guns for stuff like destroying something they could just dispose of in another way, but that I didn't have that gut reaction this time and thought he was awesome.

Somehow that turned into being a slave or a coward.

See what I mean?

I own 5 guns, and I'm quite proud of it. Because while you liberals wait an average of 8 minutes for the cops to show up in the event of home invasion (and probably also act super nice to the guy), I'll be immediately pulling out a 12 gauge single pump action shotgun and blowing the guy's head off.

I will never understand where the fear of guns came from. Free men own guns. Slaves don't.

I'm not dumb enough to think I can reasonably change your mentality.

Just know that it's...scary. You sound more like the invader than the one being invaded.

The fact that you own all these guns means any burglar who attempts to break in is thinking he needs a gun too. And thus the horrible cycle begins.

There is a line between self defense and arming your entire house. One gun is enough and IMO, too much.

I dont feel like a robber coming to steal my TV deserves to die for it. Sure, he should get his ass beat and be arrested when the cops come, but I don't wanna murder the guy.

I only have them for self defense, and my real-life friends don't even know they exist because I know how most people "get".

I pray I never have to use them ever, of course, but if an emergency happens I'm ready for it. There's nothing wrong with that. I have 2 magnums for good stopping power, a 9mm that my wife is able to use, a single barrel shotgun for her and a double barrel for me. The main point of the shotguns is if 99.9999% of robbers hear a pump shotgun, they're running out of the house as fast as they can. The main defense comes from the handguns.

I have no problem with any of that, and I didn't think my post even implied that I did. Perhaps I didn't word it correctly, but you yourself said you haven't used them, so you're not doing the kinds of things I was thinking of, like posting videos of yourself shooting random crap in your backyard.
