But can you RKO a cat? They are fast. It would take an incredibly precise RKO to do it before they could revert it and make you tap, imo.

Very mixed feelings about this

on the one hand, the daughter is a f***ing dumb c*** and really does have it easy and should know better than to post s*** like that on facebook.

on the other hand, no one should ever EVER take facebook as seriously as the father did.

one the one hand, if I had a bratty f***ing kid like that, I'd probably do the same thing he did if not worse...

on the other hand, if my parents had ever done something like that to me, I would've done things that would utterly horrify them but I'm incapable of tolerating any kind of punishment and have psychotic tendencies when it comes to willingness to do things to prove a point.

She should be able to blow off steam but he should be able to put her in her place. Considering that in either of their positions, I would probably do worse things than either of them has done, I really can't take a side...

Going down the list, B8

- Would allow their children to walk all over them.
- Think this dad is an ass for not letting his child be a lethargic ingrate.
- Think the daughter is an ass for being a lethargic ingrate.
- Is somehow more volatile towards the child than even the father was. (Referring to a 15 year old as a f***ing dumb c***? For real?)
- Wants to derail this topic by making it about a B8er YET AGAIN

It's like clockwork.

Honestly Facebook is a new ("new") outlet for kids to b**** about things to each other.

I said terrible things about my parents to my friends when I was 15. I think a parent would be naive to think this doesn't go on.

I guess if you see it so blatantly you have to punish them for it but...yeah too far imo. It's just typical teen angst stuff. But if he went out of his way to look at her wall then yeah lol.

Went on his facebook, Aftermath post.

For those that wondered, commented, criticized, and just in general wanted to know:
My daughter came through it fine.

Yes, she's in trouble, and yes she's grounded, but that doesn't mean every moment of her life has to be miserable. She's going to come to terms with the changes that will be present for a while; no TV privileges, no Internet, etc.

In the meantime, once the initial anger passed,... she sat with me reviewing some of the comments that have come in via Facebook and YouTube. One person even suggested collecting the shell casings and auctioning them on eBay. I said I’d do it if it would help contribute to her college fund! When I told her about it, she thought a minute, got a funny calculating expression on her face and said, “in that case you should shoot my phone too. We can use more bullets and I’ll go half-sies with ya on it! It’s not like I’m going to need it any time soon. And I can use the money we get to buy a new one.”

While the whole point of this story isn’t funny, what is funny to me is how weak some people out there think kids are. Our kids are as strong as we help them to be. My daughter took a horrible day in her life, had her crying fit, then got over it, accepted her punishment, and hasn’t let it (or people’s comments) destroy her strength. I don’t get any credit for that. She’s strong and able to overcome almost anything life throws at her.

Since this unsuspectingly threw her into the limelight much more strongly than either of us intended, I asked her if she wanted to make her own response video, and told her I’d let her do it if she wanted to. She doesn’t like being in front of the camera, so she declined, but I’ve told her if she wants to write a response or post a video response, I’d be OK with it. It’s only fair considering the viral nature of the whole thing. So far she’s not really interested. Quite frankly it seems she’s gotten bored of it much faster than the general public has. If that changes I’ll post it here.

My mom did something similar to this when I was growing up.

I don't really want to go into details of what I did (after having done it before and being warned what would happen if I continued to do it later), but she had warned me she was going to give away my nes and all of my games if I didn't correct my behavior.

Of course, I didn't believe her as she had payed for everything, so I went and screwed off again.

She found out, and immediately disconnected my nes (that I was playing at the time) went next door and gave everything to that family for their kids to have (she had already talked to the parents and they were fine with it). Their kid was a friend of mine, so not only did I lose my stuff but it was given to a friend so I knew exactly who was benefiting from my idiotic behavior.

I eventually got another one, but I never did that s*** again because I knew what would happen if I did.

That said, the kid has it easy. If that's all I had to do when I was that age, I would have been thrilled. On the other hand, as a parent, you can't really say "well back when I was your age, I had 2 jobs, moved out, went to school etc... etc..." It's always going to be a different time and a different way of life than when you grow up.

He said he had warned her what would happen if she did something like that again and she chose to do it so I have no problem with him doing what he did, especially since the parents are the one who paid for it (it'd be a different matter if she had actually saved up the money to buy it herself).

Yes, facebook has become the way for most teens to vent about their parents and things like that, but here's the thing....back before the internet, we just vented to friends. What would your parents have done if they had heard you talking to your friend and telling him/her that your parents were lazy asses and you're entitled to things that no parent is required to give to their children and cussed up a storm? I know what happened to me when I did that one time. I got my ass whooped by my mom, my aunt, my uncle and my grandparents. I never did that s*** again either. After that, we all sat down and talked and it finally dawned on me that if I wanted something then I had to earn it.

I got my first job when I was 16. Kids at school used to make fun of me for working at Burger King, but it was funny b/c my family pledged that for every dollar I made, they'd put a dollar into a savings account so I could afford a car sooner. Once I started working though, I also started to be able to afford to do the things I wanted to do much more often than having to rely on an allowance or on the charity of my family.

With all that said, I think the public lesson learned here is this:

If you have a dad in IT and you insist on doing s*** online that you don't want them to know about, learn to fix/upgrade/build your own pc.

But that's the whole point of it. This is going to happen. I'm sure everyone who has posted ITT has gone off on their parents behind their back at some point - though obviously not to the extent of that girl. You can't deny a kid something they think is necessary (even if it isn't in reality, but that's not the point) and then not expect backlash for it.

Yeah, everyone has gone off about their parents behind their back.

The point is that she was stupid enough to get caught and suffered the consequences for it.

And yes, as a parent, you can deny your child something they may think is necessary and not expect backlash because guess what? You're the parent. If the kid lashes out because of it, then they suffer the consequences of their actions and hopefully learn the lesson.

Nah. Expecting zero backlash is just unrealistic, even if we're going down the "they cannot ever be questioned" route.

I'd be worried if my kid just happily accepted any decision and went about his day personally.

But the backlash is going on behind your back. It is going to happen. This girl is probably still talking s*** about her dad (...probably MORE) now than before. Facebook is just another avenue for it.

If you see it, punish them for it - you're being disrespected. But it's in no way unusual, over the top, it's standard kid stuff and the dad went too far. I mean he went out of his way to LOOK for it. If you're rooting through your daughter's FB to find insults directed towards you that strikes me as your problem more than the kid's!

Like has been said in this topic, he's even more of an attention whore than she is.

He meant that from the fact that he and his wife were both blocked on her facebook(probably other privacy settings as well, because that would be a very easy thing to bypass). Then he goes an mentions about him installing some new stuff on her laptop. So like Leebo said it was probably just an open window/tab or something.

Right? What kind of thin-skinned crybaby is this guy if he can't deal with the possibility of teenagers thinking he isn't cool?

First of all he shouldn't have been spying on her Facebook. If she blocked him, she wanted privacy, and it's very important for parents to let their kids have privacy, especially at that age. Just because he "works in IT" doesn't mean he has the right to break into her private stuff. If he was a locksmith would he have the right to pick the lock on her diary? Even if this were brought to his attention some other way (i.e., another parent whose kid didn't block them commented on it and they saw it and told him), he should have left it alone. If it were something more serious, like photos of underage drinking, then they should deal with it in private. The idea that parents would dump on their kids in public like that is insane to me. It's like when couples fight in public, it's completely uncivilized. But he shouldn't really have done anything about this in my opinion. She didn't actually DO anything, she just complained. Everyone complains about everything! He's complaining about her right here!

also lol he missed twice

Bio's pretty much right in this topic.

Had the father just taken away her laptop/phone, you guys wouldn't be nearly as upset. All he did was make it a bit more of a spectacle in an attempt to hammer the point home since (obviously) the first three month span she was grounded did nothing to get her to change her attitude. It's just really not a big deal. I feel like if he weren't wearing a cowboy hat and using a gun you guys wouldn't be as upset, either. It's just... really not a big deal from a parenting perspective and I don't see why anyone thinks it is.

Guy had no right to be looking at his daughter's facebook if she had blocked him, and he totally overreacted to standard teenage b****ing. It's also not really reasonable to expect your 15 year old to have a job, at least during the school year. Furthermore, I can't fathom trying to publicly embarrass your daughter; if you have a problem with your kids, address it in private.

The publicity was what really made it a spectacle that would really get her attention, though. If he just shot her laptop that, effectively, is the same as just taking it away from her.

It'd only be childish if he was doing it out of spite. I get the feeling that the guy just thought that this was the best course of action to really get his daughter to pay attention and stop being so whiny and entitled.
