Until I downloaded Recettear, Katawa Shoujo, Plants vs Zombies, Terraria, etc.

I love Xbox 360 more than anything current gen, but I'm ashamed of what they did to Indie games with that whole "Game Type" thing. Ashamed to admit Steam's doing it better right now v__v;

Just a random thought.

At the same time, I ain't playin' Arkham City or some **** on my PC. Lol wtf.

I pretty much gave up on console gaming this last gen

DS was better than anything that hooked up to the TV, and PC games have been so awesome.

This.

Hell, I've only had a DS (ok, 3DS) for a couple weeks but the actual games for it are awesome. My 360 and PS3 had maybe one "exclusive" game for each bought a year... My PC consistently has a game bought a month on steam, not even counting all the indie games I get when they're on sale =/

GFWL is annoying, but shouldn't stop you from getting a game, especially one that made use of DAT ENGINE.

Especially Microsoft games.

since you know, the 360 controller plugs right in and the drivers are updated in about 10 seconds and boom, fully working 360 controller for your PC.

Well PC gaming WAS kinda dead there for a bit >_>

RTS clones and Sims expansions and more MMOs to ensure you never get laid. Yum!

I like what it's become now though. I like Steam. There's really no point in the console wars anymore...it almost always boils down to personal preference. This is like the most balanced generation yet.

Laptops are sketchy because the videocards are usually bottom of the line junk. Your laptop probably has great everything else, but the laptop is some crap integrated chip made for laptops, so it's three times as weak as a desktop integrated card, which is already rough for running any sort of games.

General rule nowadays is if you get a new PC of some sort and you don't really know anything about the specs, you will probably need to upgrade the videocard but nothing else.

By the way, I've been thinking of getting a PC that won't make me wish for death to come faster when trying to run games. Is it cheaper to build a pc from ground up, or to buy a really cheap pc and update it as I go along? I'm pretty new to this so I honestly have no idea.

Right now I only have 2 laptops and a ridiculously old desktop that still runs XP and literally doesn't work with wireless internet.

Cheapest way is to build your own PC from the ground up, but if you don't know what you're doing, it might not be worth the risk.

You can spend 400 for a decent desktop and then get some 75 dollar video card and be set for years if you're not confident in building your own.

TC you have no clue what you are talking about. I guarantee the PC you are on right now + your consoles costs significantly more than a gaming PC. You have to think about it like that to be objective. If you have a gaming PC it's not like you'll need your current one too. That + games being cheaper due to steam makes PC gaming cheaper in the long run. Console gaming is only cheaper in the money you have to spend immediately. Also you can play any game with any controller you want and on a TV for like <$50 extra for the cord and a controller.

Also PC gaming was never dead.

There's two pretty hilarious extremes. The people who say "I don't have thousands to invest in a gaming pc" and those who say "It costs just a tiny bit more than a console!" I mean, we've had both of those in here.

It's not true. Gaming PCs are not "just a tiny bit more than a console", not if you want a comparative experience. The flip-side is that it doesn't cost thousands of dollars to achieve that comparative experience. If I can buy an Xbox 360 for 200 bucks, what is "barely more?" Is it $300? $400? $500? You can't get a good gaming PC for that price. Some people will say you can, but it's not true. If you paid that much for it, you'd be running games at low to medium quality.

How much do you have to pay to get a gaming PC that will run games the same quality that you Xbox 360 runs? Probably somewhere around $700 minimum. Sure, that's "barely" a bit more than the PS3 retailed at when it first launched. But that's hardly the spirit of the conversation, and plus, many PC gamers have had to upgrade since then.

For the record, my gaming rig comes in at $800 before accessories, including monitors. I love it. It's my favorite thing to game on these days. I can max everything on Ultra, with just Arkham City and Battlefield 3 having serious slowdown. But the two extremes on this argument are hilarious.

Except CPU matters a helluva lot more these days. That mythical $475 machine you're talking about doesn't include anything like an OS, any accessories, probably no optical drive (which isn't very important), and, what, a 60 GB hard drive? That machine you're referencing will run some games at low or medium. Maybe. That's a big maybe.

You can easily get a PC for $500 that can play any game the 360 can with steady FPS. You also are ignoring that EVERYONE has a PC anyways and that PC's price should be taken into account since there's no need for two.

Any game the 360 can with steady FPS at low settings.

Also, I did not ignore that. Most PCs have these integrated sets, etc, and CPUs that aren't viable for gaming. So you go ahead and take your little Compaq, buy a new motherboard, buy a new CPU, buy that video card that was mentioned, buy a new power supply to handle it all, probably have to get a new case and make sure it's able to cool, assure that your ram is gonna be fine, keep the hard drive, mice and all of that and you're still paying more than a console and, if you're still shooting for that $500, you still can't play games above low or medium settings.

It's all about shopping around. I'm not saying you can go to Best Buy and pick up a "comparative" PC ready-made for $500 (Which was the number I was arguing about; I'll give you the other two). But if you build your own and look around for the right deals, $500 is doable to be sure.

$500 is a GREAT starting point, until you realize how crappy things will look. You'll be able to play some cool games, but you won't be above medium for many and you'll want to upgrade pretty darn quick. My first gaming rig was $500. I totally agree that you can make a gaming PC for that much, but it's not comparative. Not by a long shot. My first rig came in right around 490 before OS, monitor and other accessories. But I had to upgrade to get a comparative experience. I would say MINIMUM for comparative is $650 with sales and the like.

$500 is a GREAT starting point, until you realize how crappy things will look. You'll be able to play some cool games, but you won't be above medium for many and you'll want to upgrade pretty darn quick.

Sure, you'll probably want to upgrade to get the higher quality settings, but here's the thing: 360's and PS3's aren't running at ultra-high quality. They simply aren't. That's why $500, in my eyes, brings you a comparative experience. Because if it's not matching it exactly (Which it will for pretty much any game pre-2009), it will be only down by maybe a couple settings changes.

Yes, if you want a really damn good gaming machine, you're going to have to put down more than $500; probably closer to 700-800. But that's not what I was talking about. I was talking about a functioning, relatively comparable one.
