"Gaming PC will retail for...four hundred ninety nine US dollars!"

yeah thats so much better than buying a used ps3 or 360

PC gamers are hilarious. I openly stated that I'm enjoying PC gaming once again and that I'm optimistic about it's future and it still turns into a specs debate. PC gamers are just as quirky and cult as Nintendophiles. It's just fun to watch all around.

So PC gaming was never dead, huh? Not even remotely? Then how do you explain that gap between the 90's and Steam's appeal to the masses of today?

what are you talking about

You do know that PC's high end settings are a lot better than 360 quality, right?

Of course. Which is a reason why it's perfectly alright to admit it costs more money (more than "barely") to be a PC gamer than a console gamer.

You certainly need better than low, especially when you're trying to play in HD. We're looking at my entry-level gaming PC costing $300 more than an Xbox 360. And that's without factoring in monitors, which I won't because the Xbox doesn't come with a TV. And again, at that price, it's not comparative. It might be close. It's good for awhile. But it's not the same. Another $75 and you can match it. Another $75 on top of that and you can go lightyears ahead of it. Another $100 on that and you're a baller for life

It doesn't though. There are so many things that are cheaper about PC gaming in the long run you are always going to save money on PC gaming unless you have to max everything. I have not upgraded my PC in 4 years and that was an upgrade to a $100 graphics card and my PC wasn't that expensive to begin with. There are like 3-4 games I can't play. Meanwhile Steam lets me buy games ridiculously cheap better than even the absolute best used game deals on consoles. That plus the fact that 1 PC gets you the entire library definitely makes it cheaper. If I want to play games from 2000-2006 on consoles I have to get a PS2 if I want to play 2000-2006 games on PC I buy them. Then there are console failure rates especially the 360's which are completely ridiculous. Games getting scratched is also a major issue for console games and really not for PC games. My original Warcraft 3 TFT disc is pretty much completely destroyed and no console would recognize it yet I can still install the game off of it. Same with my original Age of Empires disc.

Also you STILL are ignoring my 2nd point. If you always buy a gaming PC and never bought the regular PC that everyone has then you WILL directly save money. A web browsing PC + a console is more expensive than a gaming PC.

You haven't upgraded in four years. I haven't bought a new Xbox 360 for five or six years. If I want to play an original Xbox game, I'll use the $120 xbox I bought eight years ago. PC gaming is certainly more convenient and I love it far more, but we're not talking about convenience. I've spent more on my PC in eight years time than I have my consoles. I spent more on my entry level $500 PC than I did on the last two generations of consoles.

This has nothing to do with the topic at hand. I'm talking about a gaming PC and a console. I don't care if people have other PCs, just like I don't care if they have smartphones and tablets. We're talking about a comparative experience - web browsing doesn't factor into that. I'm not ignoring it, because I didn't see it, and now that I have, I'm pointing out that it should be ignored.

Of course you've spent more on your PC counting it all together. It is a fact (unless you are an extremely rare person) that even if you didn't game on your PC you would still have a PC of some sort. The amount you have spent now - that PC would be less than what you would need to be a console gamer.

Counting it all together? You are counting other consoles. So am I. Other PCs don't factor into this. I said comparative experience in gaming. Cost of gaming on console and cost of gaming on a PC with a comparative experience. What is so hard about this? Other PCs don't factor into this.

It's money that, as a console gamer, has nothing to do with your console gaming and does not have to be spent. You don't have to buy a web browsing PC to game on a console. It's not a part of the cost, just like everything else somebody owns doesn't factor into it. The fact that everyone owns a PC doesn't matter here. We're talking about gaming experiences.

In order to get a comparative experience you would need like 4-5 consoles easily since PC has 20 + years worth of a game library. Even ignoring what we were just talking about there is no way that will be less than a PC.

And here is where we get away from the spirit of the debate. You tried and tried to compare it to the latest and greatest and realized your prices didn't match up, so now you have to default to this but about the huge library which of course is a great point, if that was what we were really talking about. It's obvious we were discussing current gaming and things of that nature. I can run yesterday's relics on my phone.

You can't spend $500 and get a gaming PC that keeps up with today's games in the quality they're meant to be played in. That was my initial point. Actually, my initial point was the fact that people are so extreme - it's either "barely more than a console" (false) or "thousands of dollars" (false).

Guys guys guys, you should all buy a PC right now because you know what, next gen will barely be better than the current one so you're set for like 10 more years with your current gaming PCs.

Actually, they should wait a short while because we're about to hit the biggest jump in CPU/video card technology of the last four or so years in the coming months. THEN you're set for a long time!
