This isn't breaking news, but I can't find a topic on it.

Considering 95% of the console games I buy are used, I think that'll be my signal to stop buying video game consoles. It's cool; I have other hobbies that cost less anyway.

Not true. That would be a horrible move that no business people would make. If that became a norm, Gamestop, EB, and all that would cease to exist. They would basically count themselves out of any sort of console race.

Lol people who believe this to be true. I bet EA will, because they are idiots.

Pretty sure those rumors are what prompted SBAllen to make this poll a couple days ago:

It's all unsubstantiated rumors, but my god, any company that does that will not be popular in the gaming community.

There's been rumor articles on a couple game sites about that, saying they'd block used games. Of course, those rumors were also around for this gen too, etc.

I don't think it'll happen, they'll continue doing what they can to discourage used games by including a bunch of one-time codes with games and pre-order bonuses, but the registered games thing won't happen.

At least, it won't happen while we're still using discs. Of course, for downloadable games we're already there and used is gone.

It really would make no sense for Microsoft themselves to do this unless they were pressured by major game publishers. Whether or not people are buying used games, they're still selling consoles.

Granted, they do have their own publishing company but it only makes up a fraction of their sales.

I don't mind with downloadable games on the PC since those
a) are always readily available. There's no limited supply.
b) get as cheap as used games after having been out for a while, thanks to publishers trying to squeeze out every last cent from the game.
c) can always be easily obtained elsewhere if they, for some reason, are made no longer available.

Only one of those things has been true for consoles and downloadable games, though. I rarely see companies drop prices on XBLA games, and if they get taken off the store, or if they can't be used on the next console for some reason and something happens to your hard drive, there's no easy way to ever play them again.

So glad I'm switching over to MTG from video games. Way cheaper, way more fun and WAY more social. I was already slowly becoming jaded toward video games (I'd seriously rather play sports with people), but this might be the final nail.

Magic is far from cheap and it's certainly not way cheaper than games.

This could easily happen, but it would require a backroom deal between Sony and Microsoft. Both of them want to do this (remember, there were rumors about the PS3 not playing used games, either) due to the pressure they receive from publishers and developers, but neither one of them are bold enough to do it on their own. They won't risk alienating their audience like that unless they know their biggest competitor is going to do it, too. Such a deal would not be impossible to be struck, but I don't see it happening this generation.

Calling MTG "kiddy" is literally no different than calling video games kiddy.

That said, MTG is not cheap if you actually intend to keep up with all the expansions. Cheaper than gaming? Maybe. It depends on how many games you buy and for how many systems.

I read his post and was wondering whether MTG was an acronym for something other than Magic. I hear people spend horrendous sums of money on that (and I kinda doubt the "WAY more social" part as well).

No, I agree, it's more fun and social, although this does depend on the crowd playing. And it's definitely a better and more rewarding alternative to video games, at least for me. Plus, the s*** appreciates. You can make back what you invest most of the time. Games don't do this, especially in the current climate where everything can be made available digitally.

For the price of a game you can make like 2 or 3 cheap magic decks that are still effective and fun to play, or if you're going super minimalist more like 5 or 6. And you can get a lot of entertainment out of those decks.

Honestly though unless you hardly buy any games at all mtg is probably a cheaper hobby even if you're not going cheap, unless you're going balls to the walls and spending hundreds of dollars on every deck-- which is hard to do even if you're making the most effective deck you can. A lot of the really good cards are cheap and that's by design.

Sadly, with the advent of Online Passes, this is a lot more plausible than it was last time around.

If they made it so that games are locked in 'demo mode' unless you have the right unlock key DLC (which can only be obtained with a single-use code) on your system, then used games become worthless.

It would be a monumentally stupid thing to do, but they have all the tools they need to do it.

Not that I want this to happen (or even think it's necessarily a universal benefit to developers; I, and I'm sure many others, am much more inclined to be more experimental in picking up a cheap used game than a full price new one), but I'm not sure it would really affect Sony/MS's console sales much. Isn't the average attach rate for most consoles between 5 and 10 games? I'd expect of those 5-10 that the vast majority are bought new. If that's true, then the people buying tons of used games are the enthusiasts... probably the easiest people to convince to buy games consoles!

I don't know what the argument is about. We're obviously headed that way with so much emphasis on used passes, DLC, etc. Give it one more generation after this one and we should be at download only games. It's possible we take 2 more after this, but I doubt it. This is completely fine with me, because I'll just spend my money on a different hobby, or just older games.

If either Microsoft decides to do this, they will fail and basically hand their entire share of the console market to Sony.

If both Microsoft and Sony do this, and Nintendo does not, then it's up to Nintendo to find some way to capture the Halo and Call of Duty playing market.

If they fail, we are seeing the first signs of the end of the console gaming era. Either that, or Microsoft will realize they f***ed up and switch back to not f***ing over customers, which might happen if Microsoft are even slightly smarter at business than Capcom.

This article is great:
http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2010/08/used-games/

Nintendo saw this problem coming long ago in Japan and took action. First, it aggressively moved towards producing software with smaller development budgets that it could sell at lower price points — price points that it could maintain throughout the lifetime of the software without having to slash the price later. It attempted to develop games that would be sticky over long periods of time, so that users wouldn’t want to sell them. And most notably it established Club Nintendo, a loyalty program that rewards purchases of new games with cool prizes.

Lower prices, better games, free stuff. Contrast this with everybody else’s plan: higher prices, chopped-up games, less stuff than you used to get.

Are the game industry’s sales woes the fault of jerkface used games buyers peeing in the pool and causing every game publisher not named Nintendo or Activision Blizzard to lose money?

Or is it that not enough people want the games that they’re making for the price at which they’re trying to sell them?

If it’s the latter, then the games business is broken, and attempting to fix the used-games problem while ignoring the root cause would be like putting a Band-Aid on a tumor.

That quote was clarified later as being Nintendo's plan for DLC. Basically, when people are through with a game like Mario, additional DLC later could reinvigorate interest and increase revenue for the game.
