S2 Episode 1: John de Lancie Pony's Fancy, Part 2

"Last time on Pony:" First time there needed to be one of these for the show :p

I always hate how these are a cheap way to cut out what could otherwise be new content, but I can forgive pony for daring to have plot big enough to require two episodes. Sure, this also happened in the first two episodes last season, but it is different when you have attachments to the characters.

Also save for maybe 1 or 2 episodes, Season 2 pretty much stays this good.

I think the only episode you straight up won't like is Secret of my Excess, with Mare Do Well and maybe Cutie Pox falling into "okay".

Nah, season 2 doesn't stay THIS good. The first few episodes are fantastic and then it falls back into normalcy with some good and some bad. Still overall better than season 1 though.

Overanalyzing Ponies: Part 1: Twilight Sparkle: My Little Sociopath

Twilight has a very neurotic personality to say the least. She's not exactly adept at certain social situations and isn't well versed in social grace. She doesn't really know how to solve problems without guidance, such as a book. She utilizes books way too much, to the point where she doesn't know how to do many things without them. In fact, books are one of the only things she will take a direct order from, the other being Celestia. Speaking of Celestia it should be mentioned what an impact she had on Twilight's childhood, and it was by something Twilight considers a small cause on her part. Because of this, Twilight associates large consequences for seemingly inconsequential things (See Lesson Zero). Despite all this, she is very skilled in magic, but perhaps magic is another things she relies on too much, given her reactions in both Bridle Gossip and when Discord took it away.

Twilight is at the very least mildly charismatic, if a little wordy and oblivious at times. I wouldn't say she's the sanest one out of the six, but given her personal history, it would be surprising if she was completely sane in the first place.

And because I guess I like analyzing things meant for kids, let's look at ponyciety.

Ponies are given their goal in life at a very young age, and it all has a hint of fatalism to it, with the illusion of free will. As we've seen with other young ponies in the series, they are referred to as "pure potential", but ultimately, this isn't true. They're all good at one thing and, as far as we know, this thing is set from birth, whether the pony realizes it or not. (See: Sweetie Belle and her singing, Scootaloo on her scooter, etc.)

A big part of getting your very own buttstamp is living up to it, something we've seen just about everybody worry about, Such as Applejack stressing about not working hard enough for her family and overworking herself, or Rainbow Dash having a breakdown about not being able to pull off another Rainboom: the thing that gave her her own iconic mark.

Let's hope there isn't such a thing as a pony mid-life crisis, or things could turn bad fast, as far as we know, cutie marks can't change, and they would have to wear it with shame, not unlike Hester Prynne wearing the scarlet letter. Because of this looming presence of unhappiness with themselves, ponies are encouraged by their society to be happy with what they do, and if they don't, they assume something is wrong with themselves specifically, and try to correct the problem the best way they know how, (Oui Madame!!!! *twitch*) and not to question how their life is governed.

Celestia's got to have some hella good PR too, absolutely nobody doubts her. Or is it just because if anyone feels they did, or if they feel that they disrespect her in any way, they would be immediately banished to wherever ponies get banished to. Twilight is close to the princess, and her constant worry of banishment implies that it's happened before, and not just to Luna.

The entire thing seems oddly utopian, perhaps to a fault.

Basically what I'm saying is that Pony is grimdark as hell.

Cutie marks might be pretty grim if it wasn't for the fact that we have yet to see an example of a cutie mark representing something its owner doesn't like. Cutie marks aren't just an expression of what a pony is good at, it's something they love to do.

I'm concerned about the next episode because, despite it being one of the best episodes this season, it is also the first episode with 0 twilight in it at all.

I can deal without Twilight Sparkle. It isn't as if she has to be the star of every scene ever. Besides, A Rainbow Dash or Rarity is fine too. Or no main pony might be an interesting thing. Life outside the core 6 with maybe one of them being in the background somewhere for kicks.

S2 Episode 5: Sister Act

I was also told this episode would be about Rarity's sister. I....can not say I am optimistic going in unless it has some as yet unseen draw to it.

Iirc, Family Appreciation Day is the only other episode with no Twilight, I don't think anybody but Applejack shows up. Baby Cakes has minimal Twilight as well.

I like how in Season 2 they've strayed away from Twilight being the main character and really spread iit out so that everybody has equal importance.
