Radiant Dawn is my favorite.

You'd need to play Path of Radiance first however.

And Blazing Sword (just called Fire Emblem in the US) is probably the most beginner friendly, though Path of Radiance isn't too bad in that regard either.

Path of Radiance or Radiant Dawn. I'd probably have to flip a coin to pick. Otherwise I'd just pick one and keep changing my mind every few minutes.

Edit: FE7 or FE9 (Path of Radiance) are almost certainly the best two choices for someone entering the series. I think you could pick either really.

My favorite is probably Path of Radiance, but I'd suggest starting with just 'Fire Emblem' on the GBA for various reasons.

One being that pretty much everyone likes it, even if it's not their favorite (there's not really a 'fanbase split' like some of the other games), another being that the first time through the game has a forced tutorial that's not as annoying if you don't know how to play and actually need to be taught (no other FE game has a forced one) so it's best to play first.

Also it has some of the best characters in the series, really well designed maps, great balance, and is extremely replayable because of lots of hidden stuff and alternate game modes.

Not Sacred Stones or the DS one.

If you're going to play Radiant Dawn, play Path of Radiance first.

Fire Emblem 7 is good too.

Fire Emblem for the GBA and Path of Radiance are both great starting points for a new FE player. Personally, I'd suggest starting with FE GBA and then moving in to PoR afterwards, if for no other reason than that Radiant Dawn is a direct sequel to PoR, and it's cool to play the two back to back. Also, RD is kinda hard, so having the experience from two FE's under your belt will prolly help.

Radiant Dawn is A LOT better if you've played PoR first. In fact, there are things that admittedly don't make much sense if you haven't played PoR first.

Made plenty of sense to me. I got most of the story, and I read up enough on PoR to fill in some gaps. Honestly the story of any Fire Emblem game isn't as important to me as the gameplay.

If you've never played a Fire Emblem game before, I would just start with Fire Emblem for the GBA (also known as Fire Emblem 7 sometimes). It's the best introduction to the series quite easily while still being a great game in its own right.

The gameplay is more important obviously, but I rather enjoyed the plot and the characters and I think that I wouldn't have liked RD as much as I did had I played it first, considering how it actually goes and completes what PoR had started and left unresolved.

I actually like to think of them as one huge game.

Radiant Dawn is my clear favourite, but I do have to second most of this, with a bit less hype for the characters (they're good enough, though, for FE).

I wouldn't suggest to start with FE8. It's not bad, but it's awkward compared to the rest of the series and not really a good showcase of what the series is about.

Yeah FE8 isn't good to start with.

Not a bad game, but just isn't really a good representation of the series. Too many divisive gameplay elements that either you might just not like and give you a bad impression, or you might REALLY like and be disappointed they're not in any other game. It could go either way, really, but it's generally just too divisive of a game to recommend as the first in general.

But FE7 isn't too bad difficultywise on normal mode and is the only one with a forced tutorial so if you're going that route there's no reason to pick FE8. Also FE7 is a much better game.

In all honest Shadow Dragon is not a bad place to start, it IS a remake of a NES game so it will feel the 'oldest' out of all of them.
The only thing it has over the other games in the series is class changing and there being save points throughout the map, which aren't that important to the rest of the series.

It's a good place to start because it'll make the other ones seem much better and it has Marth in it.

Debatable. FE3 book 1, FE9, and FE11 are in contention for that at least. And the latter two would probably be a better intro to the series.
