For reference, everybody who is ****ing in this topic is pretty much just being whiny. We have trip reports from people who are not professional reviewers, nor associated with Squeenix. The game apparently has many similarities with the Chrono series in plot, and most of the irritating autobattle bits of XIII are gone. It's looking like a major step up, not a gut reaction on the dislike for XIII. XIII was basically a gigantic tech demo, really.

How about we just have a JRPG where every area is accessible from the start on the world map and the only thing stopping you from going there are the levels of the monsters?

That'd be cool.

Maps weren't the only problem. Is XIII-2 still without an overworld? Is it still chaptered and you're just stuck in the level you're on? If so it's still the same problem I had with XIII. I'd be pretty okay with straight-line maps if they were all on an overworld.

That being said, these maps aren't good. They're just labyrinths. Square is just going "oh they don't like completely straight roads, I guess they want big complexity!". It just leads to completely uninspired mazes that nobody wants. However, I'm not going to judge XIII-2's maps based on this. XIII's map problem was that every map was a straight line except Pulse. I don't believe that every map in XIII-2 will be like this. I could be wrong, but I have no reason to suggest otherwise when it's just these two maps shown.

Either way, I won't be buying this game unless it's used for really really cheap. XIII was not a story I wanted to be continued. That and the cast was 2 characters I liked, 3 characters I don't care for, and 1 character I absolutely despise.

it's not whining, it's a natural reaction to being fans of a series that has been up and down for a while now

it's called skepticism, and that seems like a reasonable response to anything from this company these days

I only saw the two pictures in the link, but they look more complex than anything the series has had since... the SNES? For the most part the FF series seems to have pretty simple map design. With those maps looking the day they do, I'd be surprised if they weren't a reaction to fan feedback from 13.

It seems to change a bit every time from what I can see. I liked 10's maps a lot but 13 definitely felt like corridors. FFXII and XIII-2 can both probably be categorized as relatively non-linear (at least for the series) and they look a lot different from each other.

pffffffhahahahahahahahahahaha people will f***ing cry about any goddamn thing they can these days. Beta males being beta males.

This EXACT same topic got made before 13 came out and this whole board whined about the game being a hallway. Now Square gives you all exactly what you want and the same people cry like girls. That map isn't even complicated, either; it *is* the happy medium people have been whining for since FFX. Have any of you people actually played a JRPG from the Playstation 1 era? Vagrant Story and Xenogears absolutely crap all over that map for complexity.

It isn't Square that "doesn't know what they're doing", it's Square's whiny mainstream hipster fangirl customers who want to have their cake and eat it too. This goes to show that casual gamers should never be taken into account during any game's design process because they are all completely clueless as to what they actually want. Whoever coined "the customer is always right" was living in Bizarro World.

13 was great, 13-2 is going to be Hall of Fame caliber. Can't wait to play it.

psh those aren't so bad

RPG story

one time I played in a game that featured a labyrinth that looked mostly identical and it would teleport you from junction to junction. Each dead end looked from a distance like an exit, but actually consisted of an imp statue holding a sky-colored lantern that would animate, leap off the pedestal and recite

'oh look at this, it's a dead end is it?'
'you're pouting like children and throwing a fit!'
'well cry all you want as I don't give a ****'
'And now I will gate you - set you back a bit!'

And then it teleported us to a random part of the dungeon. If you can picture a grown man capering around and reciting this about 10 times then you can imagine what this was like.

There was a second rhyme when we actually did reach the end. If we didn't defeat the real devil in about 4-5 rounds, he broke into song:

'You thought you'd get out, oh I'm sure that you did!'
"You'd hoped that your boots would walk free on the grass.'
'But I've bottled you up, and stoppered the lid,'
'So get back to the start, and kisseth mine ass!'

and then slapped its butt, farted, and teleported us back to the beginning.

As you might imagine I don't have a lot of patience for people who worry about branching paths

I don't understand ff Fans anymore. What I hate is that people aren't even giving this game a chance. The story is different, there a towns, a world map to connect towns, dialogue choices but people still whine. I do admit however the recent Final Fantasy aren't the same, I blame it on the current director, like someone above me said. It isn't Final Fantasy it is him. Motymoria or something like that. He made FFX FFXII and FFXIII and FFXIII-2. While I do like all of those games, XII is when most people think the series went downhill. But with FFX he had two other people helping him. Have you noticed all the cheesy dialogue? He makes Kingdom Hearts also. What I don't understand is that the other people who made past titles are still there, but this guy should be fired. While I do like all Final Fantasies, and think that XIII was over exaggerated in terms of badness, you could put someone else, and it would have been better received.. I think that if the next ff game is announced (FFXV), Somebody should start a petition if he is directing it. I hope he doesn't direct it. Anyway, I will be getting ff13-2 as I think it will be like older ones as it is going to get from him. Fans should stop complaining and exaggerate a games badness. While XIII was linear, I think that the story is the only part they failed in.
