Maybe he used some exploit to get his guy into the area in the first place. I mean if it isnt lvl locked and he died repeatedly or managed to avoid the mobs that would kill him to get to the containers then what he did should be fair game. So maybe there is more to the story or they are going a little overboard on policing the game.

well, the easiest exploit i can think of would be a stealth character + just waiting until others came by your road, then tailing behind.

that doesn't explain story quests, but it may not need to.

Well it depends. In WoW they look for signs of gold farmer activity and they'll ban an account if they think it's being used by gold farmers for selling gold, especially if they suspect the account is compromised. You won't get banned for being a market player though. Buy low, sell high, that's the essence of a market and it's silly to to restrict it. If you create a monopoly it's yours to exploit.

It sounds like they banned the guy in that email just for being good at making money :\

Market trading is half the fun of an MMO!

Warning/banning for market exploitation = fair game. I've seen some games going to total s*** because of such people.

The other two, though, are just stupid. Especially the swearing one. This is not how you keep and increase your player base, this is not how you make your consumers happy. It really boggles the mind that such large companies making billions of profit cannot grasp such simple things.

There are a ton of mixed stories about getting banned for market exploitation. But besides buying/sellin gold (which is the most common) another thing some people might be hit for is AH flooding. What they'll do is flood the AH with singles of a stacked item at like 1.11 or something, and then have a couple placed at 111 or something.

Another thing would be an AH bot, which is bad to begin with.

I've heard of people getting hit for cornering the market somehow. The thing is in MMOs the top .001 percent or something control the entire market essentially. They might not be able to set all the prices where they want all the time, but they have enough in game funds to dominate a market they want.

Although you can't really apply actual economic laws to these games because scarcity does not exist in MMOs. There is an infinite supply of gold available from nearly all simple tasks, so supply and demand really doesn't work correctly.

For the first case:
I heard it's something where in PvP if you capture an area you get a bonus item, in addition to your faction gaining some bonus while the area is yours. What happened is that someone had a level 1 alt account who'd keep capturing the territory back from him so he could keep gaining the bonus.

I know nothing about SWTOR so this might not be true, but it makes the first case make a bit more sense.

The swearing in tells thing is just inexcusable though.

Bioware is takin this to a much more extreme level, but i remember back when WoW first came out I got suspended for exploring silithus, as it wasn't a completed zone or whatever. It was kinda my fault as a GM paged me 3 or so times asking me to leave, but ya. Much smaller scale problem compared to these TOR issues.

While this makes sense, the email... doesn't make it sound like that's what happened at all. So either way, it's pretty laughable.

The banning for swearing in tells is easily the biggest offender, though. It's even worse that there are apparently sheep actually defending BioWare for that. Ridiculous.

This is what I heard as well, except it was a group of maxed players of the opposite alignment protecting the level 1. They phrase it horribly, but the actual offense isn't as dumb as the email makes it sound. Someone wasn't thinking when they sent that email.

I wouldn't particularly agree with this. Scarcity pretty unquestionably exists in many markets. There are some commodities that you could say have an infinite supply because people could just go mine more ores and create it, but... that's not any different than the fact that in real life there is more oil out there than is currently being drilled.

In regards to there being an infinite supply of gold, that doesn't quite break things as you intend. It requires time and effort to earn this gold and it's on a level that the average player is not going to get all the gold he needs to buy everything that he wants. Thus, scarcity exists. There are also gold sinks that take money out of the economy. This gold creation even has a real world equivalent; governments printing money and lending it out. The only effect that this gold creation has is that it causes inflation, just like it's real world equivalent.

I wouldn't say the MMO markets work EXACTLY like economic principles... but neither do real markets.

EDIT: And playing the market is prohibited for valid reasons. When people start to do so, it jacks up the prices for things beyond reasonable levels to the point where the entire economy is flipped on its head, and nobody can make any money how it was originally intended.

That's exactly what happened to WoW, and several other MMOs that let people do that.

You have literally no idea what you are talking about. The market in WoW works perfectly fine without big daddy Blizzard interfering in it. The only place there is an issue is on severely underpopulated realms, but that's its own problem.

Err, no. I play the auction house in WoW every day, and this does not happen. If prices go up too high then nobody can buy them....so the supplier that has cornered the market will eventually bring prices down so he can actually make money. It's supply and demand in its simplest form.

The only problems exist on realms that are simply too small to support an economy, but that's still not a result of anybody forming a monopoly.

TOR is a North Korea simulator.

- Not allowed to go anywhere except where you are told. (If you go to zones for higher levels than you and are good enough to survive and bring good loot, you are punished and banned)
- No violating glorious government sanctioned economy. Not allowed to sell to make a profit. No violating the perfect communist system. (Not allowed to buy low and sell high, good merchants are punished and not rewarded, not allowed to have too much money)
- Thought police monitoring every conversation. (People getting warned and banned for swearing even in private chat, or joking about being a gold selling bot)
- Failure to follow all rules perfectly IMMEDIATELY results in a vacation to the gulag.
- Every aspect of social interaction is scripted to be a showcase.
- Being around other players in the open world is considered a burden so everyone is a separated isolationist state.
- All citizenry has a massive, undeserved hatred for their sole enemy, WoW.
- You are told/convinced by other sources that the game you are playing is the greatest thing ever and you should always be happy because the rest of the gaming industry is horrible, full of strife, poverty, and evil imperialists that simply want to destroy your glorious communist workers paradise.
- Severely imbalanced class system.
- Attempts to leave are halted and forced defection is your only choice.
- Any complaints are quickly stifled and labeled heresy and treason against the government.
- Game forum practices heavy censorship whenever they deem it necessary, no explanation required.
- Game seeks aid from outside sources but claims to be fully self-sufficient.
- Entire game hierarchy is held up by bobble-headed yes men who blindly follow whatever Great Leader Bioware preaches.
- Quantity > quality. Despite eating a feast of mashed cornmeal instead of a sustaining, balanced diet, you can be glad to know that Great Leader assures you that over one million pounds of corn meal was harvested in just a week.
