so I've been replaying SH1 and re-noticed something: the intro is insane.

you get your arm ripped off, grab a demon by the skull and crush it to death, then reattach your god damn arm. you punch a guy so hard that his face gets rearranged -- and then he heals up like Wolverine or something. Alice has some kind of weird pendant that makes her float and is never mentioned again. none of these things manifest themselves ever again in the series.

I love SH1's intro. it might be my favourite ever.

SH1's atmosphere and style are amazing to this day. I popped it in last year and before I knew it I was sucked into a full playthrough. Tried the second but never got into it.

Asia is pretty whatever in SH1 until the very, very end. Europe is where it's at there.

And then it does the exact opposite in SH2!

Asia's pretty weird to me in SH1. You have the train and the village of the cannibals right up front. Then it feels like not much happens and then boom you're in Shanghai and the crap hits the fan.

I remember replaying SH1 and getting to Shanghai and thinking, "Wait, that's it?"

SH1's atmosphere is jaw dropping, SH2 had better gameplay and more side quests. But Sh1 actually feel like an horror game and more mature. There's something about that train scene that's cool as hell. I liked the Asia sections because that setting is rarely done in other RPGs. Sh2 had some badass scenes, both are out of the world epicness. Good choices of games to play.

eh, maybe the cannibal thing is more memorable to you. the same kind of thing is happening in Dalian and the sewers in Fengtian is fairly lengthy.

but you're right, SH1 flies. my clear time on my last save was 13 hours.

now that I've finished Persona 4, SH1 and 2 are the only major PS2 RPGs I still need to play

you played 3 before 2 and 1? no wonder you never got around to them

Hm, I found I significantly preferred Asia in both the first two games!

I think I rented Shadow Hearts 3 because you guys recommended the series a couple years ago and that was all the local video rental place had. I don't remember much now actually, though IIRC there was something wrong with the main character's hair.

I think 'soul' makes JRPGs, and Shadow Hearts really has it. It has that 'it' factor that I've only seen in a few recent JRPGs. The kind of positive that can only be put in apostrophes.

Probably one of the best RPG series!

If you liked Shadow Hearts 1, try and check out Koudelka for PS1 too. It's what leads into the Shadow Hearts series by plot, introducing Roger Bacon and Koudelka in it. Fits with SH1's style for the most part. Nice music too!

Man, you didn't even like the dynamic between the villains? Even the couple other people I know who dislike the game at least liked that! You be hatin', man.

Semi has some good opinions. I'm unsure how I feel about SH2 vs. SH3 (classic plot vs. gameplay case there) but otherwise, sounds right!

Any case, FtNW's gameplay is really crazily improved over the rest of the series. Only thing is, that only really came up to me especially when numbers and I decided to see if we could solo Covenant/FtNW with only their respective main characters.

Trying to solo FtNW with Johnny only was insane, but actually kinda fun. When you start to abuse the stellar charts upgrading, items, positioning, and perfect use of double attacking or hard hitting because enemy double attacks are both gonna hit Johnny as the only guy alive, it's pretty intense. And thanks to his pitiful SP, it actually makes that mechanic relevant. Granted... I never did bother to beat it because I just stopped after Malice Edna, but that's practically the midpoint at least since it's the continent switch.

Wait, so one of you got so solo SH2 with Yuri, and the other got to solo SH3 with Johnny? That seems quite unbalanced. Not only is SH3 a notably harder game, but Yuri is overpowered while Johnny... not so much. Still sounds fun, though!

I kinda want to replay both the games, but I'd probably like to have some sort of challenge that makes them (especially SH2 which is a bit too easy) a bit more fun.

Well, he decided to do one, and I just decided to see if a Johnny one was remotely feasible.

It kinda was and was fun! I'm sure later bosses would probably wreck me, but I could see a 2 man team being a possible challenge regardless of who more or less.

Also, North America > South America in it if only because every character's introduced in North America, and I really like Dead Fingers Talk as a battle theme.

Dead Fingers Talk is a very good argument for NA supremacy. But on the other hand, I think FtNW is one of those games where the gameplay just gets better and better (most of the best boss fights are in the second half) so I'm pretty sure I end up preferring the second half more! That said I'm always very happy when I get to the Garland Residence, and we get the superior battle theme back.

Haven't played 3 yet but still.

The plot covering SH1 and SH2 is the greatest VG story ever told. ICARO (Piano Arrangement) is the best ending theme to a video game of all time. Everything's perfect. I almost don't want to play SH3 because there's no way in hell it can match up to the first two.




ALSO, I have two copies of SH: Covenant and I am willing to give one away, I just don't know how yet (depends on interest I guess!) but I feel that everyone must have a chance to play this game, it's that good
