I did a solo Yuri SH2 run and a SH3 Johnny run, but both were NG+. I barely remember the details of the SH3 one but I remember the final boss being super hard.

I always wanted to try doing a Yuri-less SH2 playthrough but that seems like it would ruin the fun. it would definitely be harder though since he's so OP.

I have an extra copy of SH1 that I got from preordering SH2 (best preorder bonus ever) but I don't know if I ever want to part with it. it's like a collector's item at this point, still sealed and everything.

Man, you didn't even like the dynamic between the villains? Even the couple other people I know who dislike the game at least liked that! You be hatin', man.

what dynamic though? Killer and Gilbert arguing like kids?

I liked Lady despite her lack of, well, you know. Killer as her servant was cool too. but there wasn't a lot there.

SH3 is paper thin in so many ways. awesome gameplay though, as you said.

SH3 Is actually all I have played. I have started Covenant, but people advised against it, so I stopped. I bought SH1, but it never worked in my ps2. Maybe it will work in my PS3, though...

eh, SH2 is fine without 1. lots of people have done it that way and loved it. it hurts 1 more than it does 2 since a lot of the plot sill be spoiled.

didn't stop HM from saying SH1 is the best, though

I don't remember if I finished all of SH2's endgame sidequests or not.

Well, I know I never beat the Seraphic Radiance or whatever in either game, but the character quests and stuff, like the dollhouse.

SH1 sidequests are really cool, even if some of them are total FAQ bait. SH2's are just pointless. SH3's are equally pointless but I actually like them a lot because they have some worth since the game is much harder. Purgatory is an awesome dungeon, too.

wait, you've never done SH1 sidequests? and you call it your favorite!

Kowloon Fortress is an awesome sidequests dungeon in Asia. there's some cool backstory with Bacon and Wugui there too, plus awesome weapons for Yuri and some killer atmosphere. SH1 dollhouse absolutely kills the others. Seraphic Radiance is so awesome in SH1 as well.

seriously, pick up your game where you left off and join me!

We could always use another Shadow Hearts.

We've had pre-WW1, some WW1, and Great Depression, covering central Asia/Europe, Europe/Russia/Japan, and North America/South America.

Totally leaves room for Africa and Southwest Asia if they wanted to go through those gimmicks. WWII seems almost a bit too cliche for the occult, but that's probably only if it went the easy path with germany/nazis.

well, SH1 is short too, but it had a more modest budget. SH3 is just a bunch of random crap followed by a 3-4 hour main plotline. it was like they didn't have any writers.

plus, SH1 is laser focused. it's up there with Suikoden 1/2 for pacing. it's a very lean game and tells a complete story in its 15-20 hours.

SH1 so linear it makes FFXIII look openworld.

Like geez, playing the games makes you feel like you should never stray off the path they want you to take.

I hate people who think FF13's problem is its corridors. there's story, characters and auto-battle mixed in there.

simple linearity ain't no thing

It's an easy target because FFXIII, unlike most JRPGs, doesn't try to hide the fact that it's linear.

SH1 never feels overly linear, I don't think. you never feel like you're being funneled. you get towns (they're small, but they work), you get puzzle-y dungeons and you get actual story that's good and makes you ignore the straight path. there's some sidequests too.

Yeah. It locks certain battle parties without really giving you choice, you don't have certain classes until certain points, and you can only progress into the classes you do have to a certain extent until an arbitrary later point.

SH1 felt way more open than that! I could pick my party, make Yuri get what fusions I wanted him to get or use which ones I wanted him to use. It got along with it's plot a lot faster too.

Granted, I still like 2 and 3 better than 1 a decent enough margin.

yeah, I think I like 1 more than 2 solely because 2 spends about 6 hours staggering around, kinda unsure what to do. you're just hitting up a town and hitting a new party member until you finally get to Bacon.

it replaces that stuff with comedy and that's totally valid, but I like SH1's lean pacing over SH2's meandering plot.

once SH2 gets focused, though, it gets super duper good.

Yeah, the series was weird like that. Slow progression of atmosphere being replaced by comedy.

Granted, only FtNW really went just off the wall there. Even with Joachim, Covenant's jump wasn't as ridiculous as FtNW's "Ok, break Al Capone out of Alcatraz, in the meantime this 100 year old talking female cat that knows drunken kung fu is going to be running his mob and will join as a party member".
