Normally I wouldn't do three matches in a day, but I want to be done with round 1 today. For future reference, let me know if it's a bit much.

Welcome to another round of the Best OST Contest, where we decide the best game soundtrack by voting on the songs in it.

Condensed rules and guidelines:
* You must listen to both songs in the match. Use the provided links.
* You must vote on the songs in the match. Not the game's overall music. Not how much you like the game itself. ***VOTE ON THE SONGS***
* To help enforce rule 2, All votes must be given for the song title, not the game or the seed number. No exceptions.
* Normal contest rules apply about alts, rallying, multi-voting, etc.
* No mid-thread tallies, please.
* Matches run 24 hours from when they start.

Winner's Bracket: http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=410364&tclass=Winner%27s%20Bracket

Previous results:
a. Space Jam led In Case of Trouble the whole way out. Barkley: Shut Up and Jam Gaiden advances, 21-13,
b. Mute City and Espionage X dueled the entire way through the match, and neither was able to develop a lead. Constantly trading blows, seldom did either get two votes in a row, and in the end they tied. No decision, 17-17.

Better Perfect Dark link:

I really should listen to some of these tiebreakers ahead of time. Don't like the quality in Perfect Dark, and I'd honestly probably have DQ'ed the F-Zero track if I had realized ahead of time that it isn't even a remix of MK64's Rainbow Road but simply an arrangement with electric guitars. *sigh*

I would call this another frustrating example of front loading but space jam isn't even appreciated for its musical value, it polls well because of it's memetic value, it's really just on b8 being b8 -_-

speaking of things that poll well on memetics over substance, PW music today! not overly impressed with SoA either on this song, meh first match but at least final battle is kind of epic in some places

mute city vs espionage was kind of close for me but this is much less so, really questionable song choice, I'm fairly certain there are 7 songs in f-zero X better than this

ryoshima plains is good shtuff, I love okami's mixture of orchestral and traditional japanese instruments, it's epic and mystical and majestic and a lot of other great adjectives! time travel isn't bad but it got a bad opponent, okami is one of the best soundtracks of the past 5-6 years for sure and it might've been a little early for this song, idk have to check the track list...

Gonna disagree with you on two points Liquid:
1) I genuinely liked Funky Stars Remix. That and jtt are valid contenders. The rest of the soundtrack might not be so memorable, but even though I can see how some might not like it, it is an enjoyable song. For me, anyway.
2) Okami needs Ryoshima Plains here. I'm having a hard time making the call on this match, and a weaker song would probably make it a snap decision against Okami.

Fun fact: Barkley is the first top option to win a match since Chrono Trigger, making it just the second on the right side of the bracket to do so. Since then, we've had 11 bottom options and 2 ties.

Well, s***. Here I was complaining about how bad the songs for PW:TT and Skies of Arcadia were, and then they go into a tiebreaker and they're both flat-out awesome. Final Battle ~Opportunity~ wins this one, but both are far better than the songs they sported in their original match.

Strategy! To whoever did the nominations for F-Zero X, that was an absolutely brilliant choice of tiebreakers--the "it's FREAKING MARIO!" factor always comes through in the clutch. While I still maintain that the best Rainbow Road theme was Double Dash!!'s, a rock remix of MK64's Rainbow Road is plenty good. Perfect Dark's end credits are pretty good too, but not good enough.

So good to see that jazz is not dead. Theme of the Last Time Travel (live version).

Didn't notice the later links for the Perfect Dark song. So, one of those two is the official link? Then I feel much better about my decision--only because I stuck around for the entirety of the original version was I even considering switching my vote to PD End Credits. Rainbow Road is definitely better.

Final Battle ~Opportunity~
Rainbow Road
Theme of the Last Time Travel

Ridiculously easy first match. What a weak, weak choice for Phoenix Wright's alt. You should've saved a song that at least had Round 2 pedigree for the alt, people!

Second match was interesting...until I got 10 seconds into Rainbow Road (having listened to Credits first) and that was that. It's not that Credits was *terrible*, just that Rainbow Road was awesome. Also, I liked Espionage X more. >_>

Third match was hilarious. I don't get the love for the Okami soundtrack, *at all*. Ryoshima Plains was just casual ambient music! It doesn't have a real ending, and no sense of payoff - it just keeps droning on and on and...you get the idea. Theme of the Last Time Travel not only has the decency to know when to end, but also has that amazing orchestral feel - most tracks don't pull off orchestra work succesfully, but boy does this one pull it off. It has a sort of 'quiet strength', if that makes any sense, as it can be simple background music, but by paying attention to it the small nuances and little details come out to the fore. And of course, it has its ending as an ace in the hole. Who'd think it'd build to such a powerful conclusion from that calm beginning?

Overall, three weak matches, but two of the six songs are great and a third one is pretty good. Theme of the Last Time Travel>>Rainbow Road>>Final Battle>>>Credits>Ryoshima Plains>>>>Elise Deauxnim.

From: MycroProcessor | #029
Kanz just doesn't enjoy music without a relatively concrete traditional structure and goes on for longer than his attention span.

Not really. I can appreciate music that doesn't have progress, but it has to have something to hook me in anyway. For example, I like Eno's ambient albums, but background music like Ryoshima Plains doesn't catch my attention at all. If I had to compare it to something, I'd say that it reminds me of Hyrule Field, except much more boring. There's nothing interesting in it for me.

PS: Funny you should make a comment about length, Mycro, because my all-time favorite piece of music is a 27 minute long jam that relies a ton on atmosphere. I just don't have any sort of patience for long pieces that don't do anything with that length, is all.

I think ambient is just his word for music he interprets more as background music than something that is obviously trying to catch attention, even if it is not an accurate description. I shouldn't speak for him though, why did I just do that twice in a row?...sorry if I came off as mean in these two posts.

Nah, I know what the difference between ambient and background music is, I was just using a different definition of ambient from the usual - that is, talking about Ryoshima Plains as a 'setting' theme.

I think it might have something to do with its dynamics - it kind of sounds like there's no changes in volume, and certainly not in instrumentation throughout. Not quite sure why it doesn't work for me though, honestly. :-/

From: MycroProcessor | #036
I can kind of see what you'd mean by that I suppose, in a sense it's still having a short attention span for repetition of things though, and you tend to jump to the threshold where you interpret music as "not doing anything" a lot quicker than I do.

I probably do - I actually don't ask for much from a musical piece, just that it offers me something to follow. If it can't provide me that, it goes into the dustbin. My Youtube playlist tends to be dominated with shorter or more varied VGM pieces for this reason.

I can see this I guess, it does stay at pretty much the same intensity throughout and it really could benefit from more dynamics

repetition is also a strange beast, sometimes it bores me but then there are other songs that are repetitive that I love, I've never really been able to figure out what the difference is for most of them...

I think dynamics are indeed a very large part of it - in spite of being the same for such a long time, Velvet Revolver's Heroin doesn't particularly bore me, for instance. Sometimes I can't listen to it because it doesn't go with my current mood, but it's not like it just fades into the background. That isn't the case with Ryoshima Plains: I even went ahead and listened to it three times before Theme of the Last Time Travel (which I had been listening to lately for reasons unrelated to the contest), just to be fair and...nope, no dice.

I would call this another frustrating example of front loading but space jam isn't even appreciated for its musical value, it polls well because of it's memetic value, it's really just on b8 being b8 -_-

Or it could just be a song I really like. Also, I don't consider putting Space Jam first frontloading. I believed it's strength was a true unknown; it could be really strong or completely fall flat on its face. I was almost thinking the opposite here, that because this is B8 it wouldn't do so well. But case in point, it's good. I'm still confident in my selection...I think some of the songs don't get enough credit, though I can admit some of them are hurt by their length and how abruptly they end. I'm interested to see where it goes.

my all-time favorite piece of music is a 27 minute long jam that relies a ton on atmosphere

Can I ask what this is?

I asked to change your list once you threw a temper tantrum and left over nothing. Once azuarc decided to continue to let you participate because he's a nice guy, he kept your old list and I didn't say anything in contention. If anyone's 'butthurt' (god I hate that word), it's you, for submitting a bad song list that catered to your own personal tastes and watching it lose in Round 1. If you had wanted Bastion to succeed, you would have based the list off of what multiple other people said was good, which while it may have still lost early on, would have almost certainly done better regardless.

What are you talking about? A decent number of people said, at the very least, that the first two songs on your list were worthless and should be changed. My 'terrible selection' was mostly based off of opinions I got from other people, so while you're free to think that it was bad, you'd be hard-pressed to say that it wouldn't have done better than a list based off of one's persons personal opinions. As for 'raging' yesterday, I'm not sure making one sentence in post in a topic qualified as raging, but hey.

Most of all, it's interesting that whether or not Space Jam was getting any meme votes (which was probably somewhat of an influence), you basically defeated any point you could have had earlier in this topic when you admitted that you don't know what makes repetition good for you. In Case of Trouble is an ambient, repetitious song, and those are always hit or miss with just about anyone. While I can understand putting it on your own favorites list, I'm not sure why you expected it to do well.

Oh, and there's no grudge - I would've said the same thing if someone had come in and gone "Man, why is Elise Deaxnim losing? Board 8 has such bad taste". You picked a bad song, it happens.
