Welcome to another round of the Best OST Contest, where we decide the best game soundtrack by voting on the songs in it.
Condensed rules and guidelines: * You must listen to both songs in the match. Use the provided links. * You must vote on the songs in the match. Not the game's overall music. Not how much you like the game itself. ***VOTE ON THE SONGS*** * To help enforce rule 2, All votes must be given for the song title, not the game or the seed number. No exceptions. * Normal contest rules apply about alts, rallying, multi-voting, etc. * No mid-thread tallies, please. * Matches run 24 hours from when they start.
Previous results: a. What started off as two tight matches grew a bit more distant, as MeGaLoVania started to distance itself from Flamenco. Homestuck advances, 19-15. b. The other Final Fantasy title fared pretty much the same, as Auron's Theme watched Flying Battery pull away down the home stretch. Sonic 3 advances 19-14.
------------------------------------------ 13. Kirby's Epic Yarn vs 4. Touhou 8 - Imperishable Night
Fountain Gardens
Lunatic Eyes ~ Invisible Full Moon

3. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials & Tribulations vs 14. Skies of Arcadia
Will vote later, but I just had to punch the air right now.

cool song, Kanzaris. How come you didn't use that for the Homestuck nom?
Gotta go with dat bottom option. We haven't had an odd-numbered seed win since #1 Chrono Trigger. The last ten matches have gone to the second option, and that's where my vote lies today. Only one song I'm keen on today; the second match is a "which is less meh?"
Lunatic Eyes by default. The other song is terrible, while this one is at least tolerable. Little Jack. Neither is very good, but both still manage to be better than the songs in the first match.

Lunatic Eyes Little Jack
I like all the others I picked more. :P
Also, I really was very pleasantly surprised with the result. I figured Homestuck was a goner when I saw it was up against Vamo' Alla Flamenco, particularly because MeGaLoVania had its doubters during the nomination process and I had to argue in favor of it to keep it on the list, so seeing it win made me really happy. Pity that Homestuck still has a really tricky match up ahead and it is also going to use an untested entry against a soundtrack most people called a worldbeater, but hey, people MADE IT HAPEN once. Maybe lightning will strike twice here!

Oh, a big machine with flashy lights. A big machine like that has me written all over it. Well, okay, it doesn't. But give me time... and a crayon --11th Doctor
Terrible day. I only found one of the songs truly enjoyable, Little Jack. Everything else doesn't deserve to go into losers, let's not even talk about advancing. Little Jack>>>>>>get this trash out.

My bracket loves those results; my actual sensibilities, not so much so!
It's a shame that this was the only Kirby game that made the field, because the series has produced some great music and this most certainly isn't it. Even a weak Touhou song like Lunatic Eyes ~ Invisible Full Moon is better. (What's sadder is that that may be one of the better songs on IN's roster for this contest--there are so many better songs in that game that were left out entirely.)
...Oh god no. Fountain Gardens pisses all over both of these songs. There will be plenty of times when I think a Touhou song is the best of the four songs of the day, but a day with Lunatic Eyes should not be one of them! That said, Little Jack gets this easily. There's a huge gap between all four songs today, even though the best of the four would be hard-pressed to compete in that craptastic Day 3 I keep complaining about. Meanwhile, VVVVVV is languishing in the losers' bracket thanks to running into Frozen Synapse in round 1. And of course, the nominations list is easy to see, so we can all clearly see that some of the 12-seeds had only 5 noms, the same as the 16-seeds. We could've just as easily had Frozen Synapse as a 14 taking out the overseeded Trials & Tribulations while VVVVVV was knocking out crappy 16-seed Skies of Arcadia.

From: TheKnightOfNee | #021 What on earth did you people see in Megalovania? I don't understand that one at all.
-Amazing chiptune instrumentation. You can't deny Radiation has good taste in the samples he uses even if you don't like the end result. -Great guitar from Joren 'Tensei' de Bruin, as usual. -IT'S A SONG. Seriously, do you know how *hard* it is to find videogame pieces that are NOT ambient noise? That develop in a way resembling a real structure that isn't meant to be ear candy? -It's just plain great. The end product works really well, as '17'-bit pieces are won't to do.

The opening few seconds are pointless and random, kind of like Monty on the Run but not nearly as ear-splitting. But after that, it's awesome. The funky riff that plays through the whole thing, echoed by the saxophone, is simply great. The melody, on its own, is not amazing, but it foils well with the accompaniment.
That said, I have serious doubts about the round 2 song, Harleboss.
Fountain Gardens Lunatic Eyes bothers me somewhat for some reason. Combine that with the fact that the instruments annoy me as usual, and somehow, Fountain Gardens doesn't seem as bad imo. :O
Trial 2004 Much better match. Little Jack got a little too repetitive, otherwise it probably would've gotten my vote. Well, maybe not. Trial is easily right up there in the AA hierarchy, probably top five minimum and a damn near perfect song. Overall, both are great :D
Technically, this isn't true! Normally I roll my eyes at that kind of strict definition, but if you're going to use bold caps here!! >_>
...However, that's probably a point in its favor. The way the board handles vocals, technically being a song is probably not a good thing!
Let me rephrase that: it follows the standard type of progression you might see in a music single instead of endlessly dragging things out longer than they actually should be. That work?
(it also does vocals, just not in that iteration of the piece)

From: xp1337 | #035 ...Maybe? I wasn't very serious at all in the first place, and I thought that was pretty evident in my post!
I see. I didn't notice, sorry. It's actually something you can have a nice little discussion about so I wasn't sure!

Fountain Gardens (pity vote, sorta). Kirby meets Tinpan Alley? Lunatic Eyes sounds cool but 1:08-1:30 ticks me off.
Trial 2004. Dang close, but the awesome bass line wins out (0:19-0:39....ownage!). Little Jack is a great piece, though, and I won't mind THAT much if T&T loses here. If T&T also loses in the LB next round, though, I will cry!

"As the size of an explosion increases, the number of social situations it is incapable of solving approaches zero." -Vaarsuvius, Order of the Stick
Fountain Gardens is the sort of piece that I wouldn't mind hearing in a game, but outside of it, would strike me as not much fun to hear. Not bad or anything, but nothing above average to me. I like Lunatic Eyes, as I do most Touhou pieces, so that made the first match an easy choice. The second was closer, since I like Trial 2004 and Little Jack to the same extent, which is somewhat above average. Little Jack just appeals a bit more.
