I'm just glad that Launchpad will not be allowed in GameFaqs' next contest. But I'm worried that Einstein will get nommed in and take a few rounds. After all, GameFaqs likes their joke characters too.

Still, we get near triple the vote totals in 12 hours that GameSpot gets in 7 days. That's cuts down on rallies big time. Some stupid niche board can't influence the outcome. I think that's why they care less about our contest.

Too bad Einstein is ineligible for gameFAQs contests.

Red Alert is supposed to be a re-imagining of the cold war. Of course Kane is in Red Alert for some reason.

So basically The only Westwood characters that have been in a contest setting like this is Kane and Einstein. We need someone from the Dune games to complete the circle of Westwood.

I don't know what kind of agreement they had in the 4chan forums, but Otacon winning over Epona does not make much sense to me considering he's probably on par with Alyx's strength.

Oh well, he's the one with the lowest lead, so I'm not so surprised.

Did we really think Otacon was going to 60-40 Vivi or Frog? Or think Epona would safely beat WCC? All we really know of Epona/Otacon was that she was behind by ~100 votes before 4chan opted to back Otacon early in their match. They've each done well for a GameSpot-contest about sidekicks and both proved they weren't wasteful contenders from the NRT.

To Otacon's credit, he outvoted Epona fairly in the vote-in and was leading before 4chan's interference. I'd still take Epona > Otacon on GameFAQs, but he's done well and had a good chance of beating her fairly on GameSpot.

To clarify, Otacon was leading on Epona before 4chan specifically singled out their match; interference was already happening on the other three matches. There's a chance interference in Epona/Otacon was still there before it was magnified...but for our purposes, it's not worth arguing for or against.

Otacon's path was very clear since the beginning from the fact that Chrono Trigger characters were expected to do quite poorly, and Vivi didn't really show off in the vote-ins either. It was clear that he would made it to the Elite 8 quite easily (without any 4chan intervention of course), but he is one of the main targets of 4chan to take down, so it's kind of surprising that he wasn't taken down earlier, but at the same time, it's not really surprising because:

1._He wasn't supposed to be as strong as Alyx, Luigi, Garrus, Tails, Yoshi, and WCC, but definitely stronger than Cortana and Zero.

...And 2._If he was taken down by Frog, it wouldn't have been good trolling, actually it would have been quite the opposite since many love Chrono Trigger, but he could have been taken down by Vivi, although I think it wouldn't have been such a good trolling either.


Epona, on the other hand, was not expected in any way to upset WCC, so she was clearly rallied by 4chan because WCC was one of 4chan's primary targets from the beginning as well. This is the Round were Otacon is supposed to fall back, but Epona vs. Otacon is NOT a good match for the trolls because neither of them is good troll material. That explains why they are so close as opposed to the other 3 matches which are much more settled down.

This round and the next round are both 2 days long. The final match is 3 days, though.

I remember when we used to get on GameSpot's ass about making the rounds so long, yet that might actually be a good thing in giving GameSpot's users a lot of time to reverse some of the damage down by 4chan.

Time is not the problem for GameSpot, it's their advertising. There's no doubt that 4chan's interference would mean almost nothing had the average GameSpot user knew about the contest.

Another reason that adding more time won't work is vote total decay. While there may be less 4chaners that haven't voted by the third day there are also less normal GameSpot users that are wanting to vote.

Lost in the fact that 4chan is turning this into a mockery is that this bracket was horribly constructed anyway.

First region: Two of the four likely strongest competitors in the region (by real strength, not 4chan strength) face each other in Round 1, with the winner then having to face one of the other two in round 2. Zero doesn't face any challenges until the Elite Eight, with his biggest test in the first three rounds possibly being Round 1 (not that this is much of a test).

Second region: Only three contestants with a decent chance of winning the region, and two of them face each other in round 2. (Of course, thanks to 4chan, what actually happened was a character that shouldn't even be eligible ends up knocking off the four strongest characters in the region--at least, I'm guessing that Clank is probably fourth, though he wouldn't stand a chance against any of the other three.)

Third region: Seven out of the eight competitors in the top half of the region would easily lose to any of the four that made it to the second round in the bottom half--but not one of those four stands any chance of beating Luigi in the regional finals. (I guess we should be thankful that 4chan showed up to make this thing interesting.)

Fourth region: All four of the first-round winners from the top half of the region are decently strong and would stand a good chance against probably 75% of the first three regions, easily, as would first-round loser Servbot. None of those four, however, would stand a chance against the four first-round winners from the bottom half. (Well, okay, Weighted Companion Cube would.) I'd wager that even with the probable favorite to win it all in a legitimate contest, Luigi, being in another region, the fourth region is stronger than the first three combined.

But yeah, whatever. I haven't been following this contest that closely, so I don't know how deep 4chan's influence goes. Which matches look fake? Because some of the results that aren't as obviously 4chan still would have some interesting implications.

Okay, reading back through the topic, and especially looking at that current result with Dogmeat once again being rallied for heavily, I can only conclude that Alyx > Midna was actually a legitimate result and not the result of one of 4chan's rallies. This is probably more surprising to me than anything 4chan has brought about.

At this point in time, it is not possible to have a 2 week nomination period and a 2 week contest entry period and still start the GameFAQs contest early enough so it can end before Christmas arrives. Last year's contest was announced on September 1st and started on October 20th.

We'll probably end up having a 1 week nomination period, 4 days of Vote-In polls, and about 10 days for a contest entry period if we can get a contest announcement before the end of this week.

I mean, 4chan has done this to GS for 2 or 3 years from what I've read so I'm wondering why didn't GFAQs suffer that much of an impact? Dunno if 4chan did anything big in GFAQs contests but I doubt it's something as game-changing as bringing Launchpad and Einstein to the finals like this one. Just wondering, really.

4chan's tried to make an impact on a few occasions (such as Best Game Ever 2, where they tried to rally for BattleToads). However, GameFAQs is much better at dealing with vote stuffing, and our votals are just a lot higher to begin with. They've barely been able to affect any results here, as a result.

Lots of pokemon matches have 4chan rallying. GTAIV vs. RSE., Bidoof winning the first hour against Vincent, Missingno.'s insanity last contest...

LBlock and Missingo doing well seemed to have rallying written on them.

But GameFaqs has a lot more voters. Like 3x more. It's harder to sway the vote.

GameSpot runs multiple matches at the same time, which makes it easier for 4chan to mess up the contest because they can rally in all of the matches at the same time. When this year's GameSpot contest started, we noticed that 4chan was even more aggressive in trolling the contest this year when most of the underdogs were winning the match early on.

GameFAQs only runs one match at a time, which is not a good format to allow 4chan to troll our contests by rallying for the underdogs. This is definitely true now that we run 12 hour matches, because it means new topics would have to be made on 4chan every 12 hours if they wanted to troll every match in our contests.

Perhaps that's because we don't expect 4chan's influence to be strong enough to actually cause a significant upset. If we see Bidoof over Vincent, we're more likely to be interested in seeing how long 4chan can keep their head above water before getting buried since we have faith that they won't actually be able to keep Bidoof ahead of Vincent. And there are also a bunch of people here who are happy to see L-Block and the like go to town on a contest.
