classic sonic games. Sonic Generations seems to be built a lot on nostalgia - to see memorable sonic stages like Green Hill Zone be given a modern twist. I realized that if I never played the older games, some references would probably fall flat.
Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles and the other assorted addons such as Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
My favorite Sonic game is SA2. Let's see if playing through the classics changes things. Unless these games haven't aged well and live on pure nostalgia only, I'm expecting some top tier platforming fun.

if you want a hard, grating experience: Sonic 2 for Game Gear. if you want a fairly easy one: Sonic 2 for Genesis. if you want the overall best, Sonic 3 & Knuckles. if you want a lot of platforming and some pretty awesome mechanics, Sonic CD. if you want the one with the best soundtrack by far and heavily underrated for being different, Sonic 3D Blast for Saturn/PC.

Sonic 1 is kinda mediocre, all things equal. Sonic 2 is goodness, although the first half is better then the second half. Sonic 3 and Knuckles is godlike-ness. Sonic CD is confusing, but what a soundtrack. 3d Blast is 3d Blast.

I did have Sonic Mega Collection for the gamecube, which is where I have played the classic games a little before the disc was lost in a move years ago. I'm using satanic means to play these games though.
Alright, just played through the first zone of the series. Sonic is about going fast, his name is Sonic for chirstsakes. But I feel like I wasn't really moving fast at all. I rarely reached top speed, but I chalked that up to me not knowing the level that well at all. I've seen speedruns that are fast as s***, so this was all my fault. In addition to mostly going slowly and taking my time, I felt at times that I didn't want to go fast. I felt like if I did go fast I wouldn't have had the precognition the game would want me to have to react to whatever it was going to throw at me. I wanted to preserve rings for the special stage, but I only ended up getting there once, and when I did I was booted out almost immediately because I didn't know what the f*** I was doing.
It wasn't a bad thing though, I had fun. The franticness of it all and the constant screams of "Oh s***, oh f***" are probably all parts of the experience I shall embrace in time.

What? Sonic 3/K, while it is the overall best is much easier than 2 imo. 2's probably the hardest of the Genesis ones. if you want a lot of platforming and some pretty awesome mechanics, Sonic CD. if you want the one with the best soundtrack by far and heavily underrated for being different, Sonic 3D Blast for Saturn/PC. Yeah pretty much. I like the Genesis s3DB tunes but thats probably Nostalgia talking

How is this port, does anyone know? I saw it at the store the other day and was kind of tempted because I haven't really played through the Sonic games, but I wasn't sure how the quality of the port is and whether or not screen size is too large an issue with how fast the game moves.
oh it ain't just the first boss. it's the 2nd stage's design as well, all that gliding and the cloud jumping. and you're never ever getting all the emeralds. trying is gonna kill you more than the 1st boss. also every stage takes like 5 minutes to get through. especially bad in the tubes one as you can die of time out pretty easily.

I think I just haven't gotten used to the physics in the game yet, but I don't think I like them. Sonic has like, no friction, I'm slipping and sliding all over the place.
I was going to upload a video of my blind Marble Zone Act 3 run, and the ensuing Game Over because I was Really Stupid, but it's in a codec that pretty much nothing recognizes and it sucks.
if 3D Blast is the Genesis version, it's the wrong version to be playing. there was a very big difference between the Genesis and the PC/Saturn one.
Actually, the Genesis version is the superior one. Better music and not-ugly-as-crap bonus games. Saturn version gets point for the final boss music though.

It's a rotating maze, at the end of which is a Chaos Emerald. The Chaos Emerald is surrounded by diamonds that you have to hit a few times to destroy so you can get to it. Stay away from the red circles, they make you lose.
The first one you don't have to do anything until you get to the emerald chamber, just letting it spin around you as you fall will get you there.
