Okay I have this s*** down. Got to Spring Yard Zone without dying, plus I have a continue, and TWO (2) Chaos Emeralds. The second one was completely stumbled upon by accident because it was my first attempt at Marble's special stage and I kinda tripped into it.

Speaking of Spring Yard, I've heard this music before, but I forget where. the point is it's catchy as f*** and I'm pissed because now it'll be in my head for days.

Am I right in discerning that the design philosophy of this game is "Upper routes are always better"?

Spring Yard Zone is done on my first try! I still have that Continue in stock too, but i didn't manage to get any more emeralds, so that's out.

I definitely liked it better than Marble. Marble Zone was just kinda slow and boring. This actually had lots of stuff going on and it was pretty fun.

Sonic 2 overall is easier than Sonic 3 & Knuckles because it doesn't really get challenging until the very end. Still fun though.

Eh, I don't know. Sonic 2 doesn't get challenging until really late, but Sonic 3 & Knuckles has the "Barrel of Doom". Even knowing what I'm supposed to do, I still can't get past it.

I spent about a minute sliding down slides in Labyrinth Zone Act 3 without realizing it looped and I had to do something.

Labyrinth Zone done! I had to use my continue, but other than that that was my only death.

I didn't actually beat Eggman but I'm hoping that doesn't matter because I beat the stage anyway.

Not as good as Spring Yard, mostly because it was a water level. But better than Marble at least.

Woah I'm digging the entire Starlight Zone aesthetic. Especially the music.

No continue though. that would've been nice.

Oh, Special stages aren't by Zone, it's just how many you visit overall.

Jeez, was Marble Zone just unnecessarily hard for a second level? I'm breezing through this and that was the only speed bump.

Yes. Generally the upper routes are harder to reach, so they're sort of a "reward" for you if you manage to reach them.

I've always felt 2 was harder than 3&K.

I somehow wasted 3 lives at Marble Zone's boss. I have no idea how that happened.

I aborted the entire run out of shame.

So, just making sure, Continues stack, right?

I have 2 or 3 in stock right now, so I theoretically have 6-9 extra lives, or do I really only have 1 continue.

I seems like a stupid question but maybe I've played too many bad games that hate you or something!

Also I've been to every special stage in every level up to Spring Yard Zone Act 2 right now, so I should have like 6 emeralds and be all badass but I only have 1 :(

I thought I figured out this special stage tomfoolery.

Also Marble Zone is like, the most boring thing ever agree/disagree

Marble Zone's music lets me forgive it for any design deficiencies. Then again, I like Labyrinth Zone.

Marble Zone is one of the worst Sonic series zones. It is still a good zone! Just not as good as most of the other ones.

Right now I'd rank the Zones as

Best
Starlight Zone
Spring Yard Zone
Green Hill Zone
Labyrinth Zone
Marble Zone
Worst

Haven't played enough Scrap Brain to get an idea.

Scrap Brain is the worst zone in the game

Just from my small taste of it, Scrap Brain seems a lot more linear, I didn't see many, if any places to deviate from the main path to get some extra goodies.

Okay so there's this one part in Labyrinth Zone Act 2 where, right after a checkpoint, you see an invincibility powerup. So you go to it and right when you jump to it a ball and chain whaps you right in the face. You get your invincibility, but it's bittersweet because you just lost all your rings.

It's like, the biggest dick move I have ever seen in a commercial video game.

It wouldn't be too much different in terms of music either. You'd just need to move Scrap Brain down to the bottom.

I'm surprised you like Spring Yard and find it easy! I always hated the boss, until I found the extra life in the sky right before the boss, which lets you try the boss as much as you need.

Anyway, great thread. Sonic 1 is my first game ever too!

I am mad at Scrap Brain because it sapped all my lives at act 3

If you know the correct path, scrap brain 3 is extremely quick and painless. It's a sort of secret trick path, right at the beginning of the level. =]
