Being a completely random dude can be significantly more interesting than your typical protagonist. It's fun to watch an ordinary guy do extraordinary things.
Describing Bartz like that is awful. So what if his dad's a hero? Bartz is himself, he's gonna explore the world with his chocobo, and he's gonna have adventures while spitting out more one liners than any one else in that list could manage. He's got more than enough personality aside from that too!
And Zidane is way more entertaining than most.
Those two by far are the top of the list. Terra way lower, Squall lower, Cloud lower.

Bartz himself really doesn't have much of a personality. There aren't any moments in the game where it's like "Yes. Only Bartz would have said/done that" except when he learns that his father was one of the Dawn Warriors. By comparison, the other protagonists (... maybe not Firion, it's been forever since I played FFII) have a lot of moments like that.
And to clarify, I'm only counting the main game in the series each, so Cloud's character butchering in AC doesn't affect this list.

so basically
BARTZ IS AWESOME BECAUSE HE'S DIFFERENT THAN MOST JRPG LEADS LOL SO IRONIC HEY LOOK AT ME GIVE ME ATTENTION FOR MY SHAMELESSLY UNIQUE OPINION
got it
Bartz is an awful, awful lead, and anyone who says otherwise is deluding themselves. Great game, horrible characters (Gilgamesh and Galuf aside, obviously).

KamikazePotato posted... Also, you seem to hate happiness. The lower down the list you go, the happier the characters get.
I honestly did not notice that.
thundersheep posted... Never understood the Cloud love. Easily one of my least favourite leads in the series.
Cloud is one of the only protagonists who discovers stuff about himself (not just his backstory, but stuff about himself as a person) and has all of that properly integrated into the story.

If Vaan isn't properly the main character, then he isn't the protagonist either and shouldn't be on the list.

Man Bosh, you really like to jump to conclusions. I like Bartz because he's a fun guy. He may not be the most deep guy around, but if you give me an upbeat, ordinary guy that makes puns, I'll like him a hell of a lot more than a self pitying superhuman.
And by the way, he's almost the exact same as Galuf as a character. Which is fine. They pal around, they bounce puns and responding groans back at each other, practically high five over seeing Faris sleeping/naked.
Same reason Zidane's good.

Bartz is pretty awesome. Again, I'm not argue that he is a deep and meaningful character or that he even has much of a character. He's just kind of an upbeat guy and that's cool.

yeah maybe. but i can read people p. well, and it's obvious that this kamikaze guy is on a quest for uniqueness-for-uniqueness'-sake. sonic colors > galaxy 2, ladies and gentlemen
which is why i quoted him and not anybody else! (though i do dislike bartz, i confess)

Sounds like you just played FF7 first and like it the best
Nice assumption, but I actually played FF7 second-to-last. The only FF I played after it is FF13. In fact, FF5 is my first FF, I found a fan translation of it.
To be completely fair, I should mention that I never finished FF12, I couldn't force myself to continue after a point.

LeonhartFour posted... To be fair, he didn't say Cloud was the only one.
But if he's going to use that as a justification, then Squall should be first because that's pretty much the central focus of FFVIII.
No, because that's the not the only important thing. Specifically, Squall is kind of annoying at first, and though it's necessary so he can grow out of it, it's still kind of annoying. Cloud is never really annoying at all, except in AC.
