I remember the most popular answers were Lumineon and Huntail. It's been many years now, so I'm wondering if things have changed here on B8.

It's still Huntail.

Asking the question doesn't really give accurate results, because if you are remembering the Pokemon, they aren't forgettable. People will just be naming simple designs, ugly Pokemon, or ones they think are plain...but they are remembering them.

The best way is to look at data based on trying to name them all. I don't see a sporcle quiz for every single Pokemon...but they have one for each gen.

The least guessed in each gen (along with the % of correct guesses):

Lickitung (40.3%)
Qwilfish (50%)
Chimecho (49.5%)
Mantyke (51.3%)
Beheeyem (44.9%)
Binacle (46.8%)
Morelull (49%)
Pincurchin (41.3%)
Fezandipiti (35.6%)

Lickitung's lower percentage is clearly just a result of the Gen 1 quiz being played by a more casual audience. But the answer is definitely one of the other 8 based on raw data.

If we're counting the SV DLC Pokemon, then it's got to be one of them.

I called this one becoming the most forgettable Gen VIII Pokemon, and I feel validated. I don't care that it's on Galarian Hau's team, and apparently other people don't either.

Many of these are likely near the bottom because Sporcle counts spelling and they have tricky names that could cause a player to give up on them, particularly Lickitung, Qwilfish, Beheeyem, and Fezandipiti. Others with tricky-ish names being near the bottom of their respective lists corroborates this (Exeggcute/Exeggutor, Snubbull, Lickilicky, Amoonguss, Pyukumuku, just to name a few) so I wouldn't put my stake wholly in that.

I agree with this.

Another thing that's worth noting, although you might consider it a valid part of a Pokemon's memorability - Pokemon tend to be remembered better when they are clustered in a group. If you remember either Huntail or Gorebyss, you are likely to remember the other, as well as Clamperl. A major thing that most of these mons share is a lack of clustering - Qwilfish, Chimecho, and the baby mons from gen 4 (including Mantyke) are all EXTREMELY guilty of this, which makes them difficult to remember when putting together a Sporcle list because there's nothing to hook onto to guide you to remembering them.

Mantine is in a different generation, so that cluster doesn't apply to a list that is only Gen IV.

Yeah, that's right. I find the gen 2 baby Pokemon easy to cluster, personally, but the gen 3 and 4 ones just slip through the fingers SO easily because they're all so random and hard to remember.

You said Huntail and I immediately remembered the Huntail/Gorebyss episode of the anime, which exactly fits the archetype of "the episode for some unimportant species," and I doubt either species has had an appearance since.

According to Bulbapedia, there was another episode involving the two in the Galar saga, and they've had some minor/background appearances in between.

I know lots of people don't like them but Huntail and Gorebyss were always pretty memorable to me. Partly because they're in a branching evolution, but mostly just because they're cool deep sea fish.

Not sure what my actual answer is. Lumineon might be up there as a less cool fish, but it had a fairly memorable role in New Pokemon Snap. Same with Basculin and Legends Arceus.

Finneon/Lumineon have been the de-facto "forgettable" Pokemon for so long that they ironically probably no longer qualify.

I probably wouldn't be able to remember the names of some of the over designed Pokemon with a bunch of sharp edges and spikes and random shit, and don't look like any type of animal or object.

Yeah, it's not really fair. But the answer isn't going to be a Gen 9 Pokemon anyway due to recency bias. The lowest ranked non-DLC gen 9 Pokemon was Bramblin at 60%, around 10% higher than the highest percentage of the other generations.

These are the only Pokemon who have shown up in a later gen and I've thought "oh neat a new Pokemon" despite definitely seeing them before:

Cherubi
Chingling
Maractus
Bergmite
Bounsweet (I do not remember this line having something that isn't the 'step on you' joke ever)
Pincurchin

I'd also say a lot of Gen 7 Pokemon who only appeared in Gen 7 like Minior might qualify from a pure public consciousness perspective. That might cause them to stand out to some people, but probably only those into ALL the Pokemon or REALLY into SuMo.
