Your FIRST Playthrough: Did you need a guide/walkthrough to beat OoT?

Playing the 3DS remake right now, and I'm wondering if anyone beat OoT back in the late '90s without a guide or outside hints.

As a kid, I couldn't navigate the Lost Woods to unlock Saria's Song (the in-game "follow the music" hint didn't click with me). After struggling with that for a day, I caved and went to Toys R Us to buy the official Nintendo player's guide.

Not gonna lie, I kept that player's guide handy at all times--which is a bummer, because I wish I had experienced OoT without checking a walkthrough every five minutes.

...I think I didn't need a guide. I was an adult when I first played through it. Don't completely remember. I do at least I remember figuring out the Water Temple, but dunno if there was something else I looked up.

Actually it's more likely my dad just helped me figure out where to go if I couldn't, but I guess that counts as tips from friends. Don't think he'd be able to remember if he used a guide or not lol. We definitely did for collecting stuff though.

I think it was my proudest gaming moment that I basically 99%'d the game (we had a busted rumble pack so the last piece of heart using Song of Storms in Hyrule Castle grounds was the only one missing.)

Not without some hiccups though. On first playthrough, I got stuck for an embarrassingly long time in the Forest Temple by missing a ladder in an alcove in the block pushing small 3d maze room. I did NOT get stuck in the Water Temple itself, strangely, but did wipe a few times to Dark Link.

After I was done the game was the school talk of "if you jump such and such a way in the pit under Ganon's Castle you can find the Light Temple/Triforce but only before you finish the Spirit Temple" or somesuch. It was decades ago.

I definitely beat the game without a guide, but getting 100% was slightly guide assisted. I think I missed a deku nut capacity upgrade and I hadn't realized placing bugs on the soft soil did anything.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I don't remember my first playthrough at all, but I do remember looking up guides on Water Temple and Shadow Temple in later playthroughs, discounting ancillary bits like Hyrule Field poe hunting and skulltula locations.

I never beat Ocarina of Time. I bought it on both the N64 and the 3DS (hated the motion controls on the 3DS so I aborted that attempt right away).

I don't think I ever beat it as a kid, which is when I used guides for almost everything. I did finally beat it as an older teenager though and I remember at least needing a guide to beat the Water Temple. It was for a stupid reason, too: I forgot those blue blocks could be removed with an ocarina song (Zelda's Lullaby IIRC) so I got stuck in a room where you need to do that to proceed.

Managed to not use a guide, although I got stuck for a while at a place where you need a fire arrow, and I never got the fire arrow in my playthrough. Fortunately, there's a torch nearby that you can shoot a normal arrow through and pass that way, even if it was a bit difficult to do.

I hated that ladder!

This is where I got stuck, and then my friend came over and we played it together for a while.

I mean, likewise, but back in the 80s the map of the overworld was literally everywhere even without buying guides.

And now that I slept on it other stuff I forget that was a thing that I didn't get first playthrough so it's probably not 99% but ANYWAY

Scarecrow Song
Hylian loach
Lots of Song of Storm grottos in the middle of fields that had no consequence
One key in Gerudo Training Grounds (still got ice arrows, though, the invisible ceiling was mean.)
The Deku... stick? Seed? Nut? upgrade from wearing masks in the Lost Woods Deku scrub stage grotto. I still forget this one is even a thing unless a randomizer goes to it.

zelda wiki says you can get by without them in the normal game, but theyre required in the Master Quest

in the base game anything necessary to progress can be handled with arrows through torches or dins fire

Probably the most abstract solution with shooting arrows through torches is when you burn the webs blocking the light in the Spirit Trial in Ganon's Castle. Normally you use a fire arrow, but there's a torch in the previous room that is just barely in line to hit the webs. I didn't realize that was a thing until I had a randomizer seed force me to do it.

We used a guide that was in some video game magazine. It had a few pieces of bad info, like claiming that the Fire Arrows were in Death Mountain somewhere (I think). I had to look up their true location after I got stuck at one point in the final dungeon.

(edit) Yeah, that one. ^

Stupid kid me kept getting caught by the Hyrule Castle guards.

Stupid kid me kept getting tentacles to the face inside Jabu-Jabu.

Stupid kid me definitely couldn't have figured out the Water Temple.

OoT is one of my favorite games ever because it taught me how to game.
