I dunno why but I am fascinated. Here's the vid of the other fishermen going bonkers on the guy that cheated (other guy must've bolted)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktSVZMuBmHk

Basically the gist is, these two guys stuffed weights and filets into the fish to have them be heavier. Fishing is serious business, these fishermen sign up to take polygraphs if they do well apparently.

Was the Chess thing ever proven or just speculation? Like I know people will go to extremes but I also wonder how vibrations can tell you which moves to make.

The fishing thing my friend was telling me about as he's a competitive fisher (deep sea spear fishing) and it's pretty wild just because of the money involved. I wonder if they will face criminal charges.

Also saw someone accused of cheating in poker with a vibrating ring and whilst not proven they handed over like a $200k+ pot so presumably did it

from what I can tell it's speculation at this point. Carlsen clearly thinks the guy he was playing is a cheater, and the guy admitted he cheated when he was younger, but everything beyond that is just guessing afaik.

They are trying to get police involved in the fishing thing yeah, possibly a felony fraud and/or theft. They def called the police and have been giving them information.

I've been following this too, and what seems odd to me is by how much they cheated. They didn't even try to make it realistic they went so overboard. Perhaps they were worried about other cheaters, or maybe they are somehow that ignorant on how much those type of fish should generally weigh?

My thinking on that is thus:
1) They are subject to polygraphs basically every time they place, and they passed those tests. The commish himself said that (I listened to a pod on it). If they pass the tests, they are obligated to give them the prizes.

2) The thing that made him catch on this time was just how overboard it went compared to expected weight. It's possible they could have cheated just enough prior (or not at all, we don't really know) that it didn't catch the commish's eye. But when several fish came in like 3 lbs overweight, that was enough. The commish went on the pod and said that he feels confident in his ability to accurately guess any walleye's weight within a pound, so he knows his stuff apparently. He also said he goes through towards the end and calculates how many places each team needs to make up so that he knows to look out for any obvious discrepancies (someone jumpin gfrom 6th to 1st for example).

3) As the commish described, it's a very tight-knit community; you can't really make an accusation without pissing off someone, and then others start to think they'll be targeted next unfairly etc. So it really took an outlandish incident to give him an idea beyond a doubt that cheating was taking place. Even in the video, the other anglers prior to the cheat being discovered can be heard grumbling about how there was no way those fish were weighing in that much.

Its like the guy who realized a horse betting site's API accepted bets after the race ended so he placed small bets to not make it obvious.

lol jk he became the first person to bet that correctly in 50 years which immediately tipped everyone off something was wrong.

Nobody lies like a fisherman and you can't keep surveillance on every participant the entire time, so the polygraph is their insurance policy, I guess?

Even though polygraphs are pretty inaccurate

Probably just gradually escalated. The more they cheated and got away with, the more they pushed boundaries. Eventually reaching the point where they got so overconfident they wouldn't be caught that they made it too blatant.

I remember clicking through the Twitter comments and there was some golf dude who was really blatant about cheating in qualifying school because people didn't dare question it even though they suspected it and it wasn't policed very well. Eventually he got caught but it seemed he was constantly pulling off outlandish feats when nobody was watching. He claimed something ridiculous like 17 career hole in ones on par 4s when there's only been 1 on PGA tour and it required a freakish deflection off someone's club or something to happen

yeah, it's kind of funny. i thought polygraphs have known to be bunk for 20 years- they just measure how nervous you are

it's more of a light or "security theater" measure, meant to ward off crimes of spontaneity

kind of like how your front door's lock can't prevent a determined lockpicker from getting in your house, but it for sure will deter a drunk person from stumbling in

There is a real cheating scandal in chess but I don't think anybody seriously has any reason to believe that it involves vibrating anal beads. It was a crazy idea mentioned by a streamer mainly for comedy that the wider media somehow got wind of.

It is known (by his own admission) that the player cheated online before, and today chess.com released a report saying it occurred more frequently than the player had admitted to. I don't think there's been anything definitive as far as cheating at in-person tournaments goes though there are obviously suspicions because of his online cheating history and his rapid (but not unprecedented) rise in ranking.

It is worth mentioning the online cheating occurred in online tournaments with prize money so it is still a meaningful problem.

It's probably against the law to tamper with wildlife in the way they did.

I don't exactly know how laws regarding fishing tournaments in general work, but I'm guessing it's something like: the tournament has whatever permits/rights to fish in this area, which apply to all participants, and by cheating in the tournament, you're not legally obtaining the rights from them, so your catches are considered illegal.
