Youre correct. I dont trust those, either. Checking a box or punching a hole in the ballot slip was much more accurate, despite politicians stuffing the box or taking votes away. Its barely an extra movement and theyre openly giving the government freedom to manipulate the results through computers.

There hasnt been a change in amount, its the type of discourse thats different on CE.

Pre 261 close: Policy and strategy debate, really cringe parroting of 538 podcasts as their own opinion. Mostly ignored far right randoms.

Post 261 close: Boomer Facebook tier posts about daily headlines that show my team is pwning your team so HA. Scoreboard keeping with far right randoms.

Some of it is the sands of time only make a dying forum worse and this election cycle being a re-run, but still.

No, they have a point. Electronic voting is a bit less secure, but the real issue is it breaks trust in elections. You basically have a black box that spits out a winner and you just have to trust that it's counted properly. To steal an analogy from Tom Scott: If instead of a machine, you had to tell your vote to some guy at the polling booth and he promises he'll record it correctly. How confident would you be that everything was on the up and up? You could give some sort of receipt or record of the vote, at which point you now have an insanely expensive pencil.

On topic: No. You cannot have current events without politics. The big current event is Iran's attack on Israel, which is absolutely impossible to discuss without also discussing the politics of the region that sparked said attack.

This is one of the worst analogies I've ever read in my life. Do you understand the world of difference between the technical capabilities of what a machine can do, and how much more accurate and concise that would be than just some guy trying to remember? I can't understand how you would think this is similar at all.

The new people running the site only have themselves to blame, closing 261 was a daft idea. We get they don't want political stuff on here, so why take away a board that would condense political topics to one part of the site when all it has done is allow Political topics throughout the site across multiple boards.

The new owners need to have a rethink.

Honestly? As a massive nerd, I'd much more trust a bunch of people counting paper ballots than a computer when it comes to an election, especially with the stakes as high as they are these days.

The similarity is that whether it's a computer or some rando, you're telling something else your vote and just trusting that they're doing their job properly. In a perfect world a computer would be more precise, but we aren't in that world.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

I'm not arguing that a machine is less accurate than humans, I'm arguing that it's far easier to change a significant number of votes through electronic voting when compared to compromising the number of people while also being easier to conceal. Is it paranoid? Yes. That level of paranoia is justified when we're talking national elections though.

Do you have a source or any sort of evidence for the bolded claim? Like, what is even sort of giving you the impression that this is possible?

I honestly can't believe the argument that you're even trying to make. You know there's safeguards in place to make sure numbers can't just be changed? Like do you even have a cursory understanding on how the vote counting machines work or just imagining how it works in your head?

Not to mention the insanity of saying "but somehow someone can compromise the numbers" while not realizing an actual human who would be taking the numbers would be infinitely easier to compromise.

Trump is the most powerful politician in the United States and possibly less than a year away from permanently destroying America.

Musk is the richest person in the entire world and bought one of the largest media platforms in the world to push far-right rhetoric and conspiracy theories.

Long story short, hackers were able to change vote totals, redirect votes to a different candidate and straight up play Doom on the machines. If you believe that voting machines are secure just because they're computers, you should seriously look into just how vulnerable computers are to anyone with a strong enough desire to get into them. That's to say nothing of errors, either from the computers or their users. Here's an example from Scotland, where simply not scrolling over properly on a file nearly changed the results of the election: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2007/jun/20/scotland.devolution

It's not that hard to compromise a human, but it's much harder to compromise several of them and the number of votes they can affect is much lower. In addition, the more people involved, the more chances there are for someone blowing the lid on any such plots, as you only need one person to sound the alarm.

The definition of current events includes political news too.

Yes, I know that is, and especially was, not what people used this board for.

But there is no reason not to allow actual current events, which includes politics. If you are here for things that are not current events, it is just the minor hassle of having to not click topics about it. Don't engage with what angers you, if it angers you.
