I get why this character was popular back in the day even though all her games kinda sucked: tits and repressed teenage boys.

I do not know how this character still has a legacy. Shouldn't you need to at least need to have a couple decent games?

I guess those reboot games are supposedly pretty good, but they always seemed so incredibly bland to me from the outside.

They are indeed bland if serviceable/fun Uncharted-like games. The redesign of Lara didn't help matters, but they seem to have corrected that in the new game which is a big plus for her.

Lara winning isn't even the most egregious thing about this. I have no idea who voted here, but here's the full top 20:

To be fair to Bafta, this was a list that anyone could vote on and only around 4000 did. With a sample size that small you're going to have an odd looking list.

Questioning why they made a public vote to commemorate their own 20th anniversary though is totally valid.

Sackboy at #5 is weird but at least he fits a bare minimum definition of iconic. Like if he was at #15 or something I wouldn't think anything of it

Agent 47 at 3 and Sackboy at 5 are by far the worst things on this list. Lara at 1 is nothing compared to those. Everything else is reasonable, or at least understandable (recency bias in BG3's case).

What's incredible is clearly nobody knew about this, or else any mid-sized community would've most assuredly voted some meme character to the top. We could've put Chester in the top 10. The furries would've easily taken a character from Echo directly to first place. 4chan would've made Wolfenstein Hitler win with 90% of the votes. I'm almost suspicious of this poll because no way nobody on Twitter would've seen this and not rallied votes for Ariana Grande (Fortnite).

Well then it's time to play the goty 2023, Baldurs Gate 3. Shadowheart is my future wife and Astarion is the best friend I never knew I needed (or will ever trust). They are both legitimately great but to consider them above others on that list is lol.

I just want to point out that that "[a]" is an edit to hide what was originally said, which was "the first".

I mean it's pretty obvious what happened here - BAFTAs are kinda inherently for a British (and to a lesser extent generally European) audience, and every single character who overperformed (Lara, 47, Sackboy, and the BG3 chars) were created by a European development team. Lara and Sackboy are both British specifically. The rest of the weirdness is just recency bias.

Even so, fairly certain that the average gamer out here in the UK will know who Sonic the Hedgehog is over Laura Croft.

List is dumb and clearly we need a contest here to rectify it.

I think the point was that Metroid was actually famous for the reveals that you played as a girl which was huge at the time yet was given no credit at all. Not that she should've been above Lara.

That's exactly what a lot of people here don't get. Gamers will know most characters but it's the general public that swings it. Plus the UK was always Sega and Sony territory back in the day.

Exactly this. If being [a] female lead in a video game was all it took to be number one, where are literally any of the other ones (besides Ellie)? That was my point. At the time I was unaware that that was them covering their asses after calling Lara the first.

Samus is quite probably a case where her design is more recognizable than Lara but her name isn't.

What I am certain about is that the reboot games have not kept Lara Croft in the minds of non-gamers. She won because it was a British poll, but the ones voting for her probably haven't played a video game in 20 years if ever. The ones that do play games are the ones voting for Shadowheart and Astarion.
