I have to go with the following:

Rainbow Ride
Tick Tock Clock
Shifting Sand Land
Lethal Lava Land

Those four, to me, are the best overall combinations of being challenging (in a relative sense), worth exploring, and just plain fun.

I was honestly half-wondering if everyone who said Dire Dire Docks REALLY meant Jolly Roger Bay, which I feel is almost inarguably more iconic, lol

The only way DDD is sort of iconic is that it's one of the only levels you HAVE to enter in a speedrun, otherwise it's pretty clearly a filler level

I am for Dire Dire Docks and went the other way around, almost voting for Jolly Roger Bay by mistake. It is unique with its placement in the game, the way you enter it and it even has a narrative which most levels dont. Its an iconic level.

So many other choices could have gone with. BBH has that damn piano. WDW has the resurgence due to the sudden popularity in liminal spaces and that one creepypasta(?). WF and DDD for being notable in speedruns ... CCM has the penguins and we just love to dunk on them ....

Ultimately went with RR over TTC. Being a stage in the Smash game everyone cums over has to count for something, right?

...oh wait, Zen banned the castle! You get stars, exploration, and NPCs there like any other stage, it evolves with your progress, it's bigger than most worlds, it features the biggest secret in the game, has more "wonder" to it than most stages, and dangit it just feels good to jump through that glitchy spot in the spiral staircase room. It is a hub world more than a traditional stage, but also if someone said Gruntilda's Lair in a Banjo-Kazooie topic like this I would consider that valid too.

Alternatively, nominate hub worlds.

On the topic of single games I did briefly wonder about maybe suggesting N64 Zeldas rather than just Ocarina of Time but really that might actually be less interesting because Stone Tower Temple would probably be locked and none of the other Majoras Mask dungeons have a chance, so it would actually become less interesting.
