  • Go. We need at least one of the big ancient games, and since the rest of the monument is going to be Euro/American-centric, I'll give the nod over chess.
  • Cosmic Encounter. Arguably the most influential game you haven't played. Variable player powers and negotiation popularity.
  • Scrabble. The mass-market word game.
  • Pandemic. A major influence in the recent gaming sphere, especially in cooperative gaming.

catan is just different than the other ones. like Go is 1 on 1, Chess is 1 on 1, Monopoly is 1 on ragequit, Catan is the first board game for a lot of people where they go "oh, so this is a strategy game." doesn't take long, makes you want to learn its mechanics, easy to understand, and is the gateway that none of the others can say. you don't go from Chess or Go to others thinking "man what does this have?" you don't go from Monopoly to anything without asking "this isn't taking 4 hours right." Catan is the one that makes you grow into the full genre, as opposed to being there for just that game. that's why i put it over others like Scrabble or Clue or Checkers or whatever - they all lack that element.

Chess is the most studied and perhaps most played board game of all time. Monopoly probably has thousands of different themed variations. Catan is the gateway into more serious games. Struggled with the 4th, but Scrabble is popular and played in a lot of tournaments.

The problem with board games is that there's really three distinct eras of board games - the ancient ones that are universal (chess, go etc), the 'classics' that every family has in their closet (monopoly, clue) and the modern ones that are way better than the classics (catan and everything onward)

I'm sticking with the modern Era because the mass market Middle Ages of board gaming should not be honored.
