Referring to pizza as pie is a very regional thing

If you ask the average person to picture a pizza, it probably has cheese on it. You can have a burger without a bun, but I would still consider the bun an essential part of the burger and not a topping.

Also if you order a pepperoni pizza, they don't ask if you want cheese. Cheese is implied. You have to specifically ask for no cheese because it's generally considered an essential part of pizza.

pizza is basically defined as bread, sauce, cheese. variations of it will exist but even something like white pizza goes "we're changing the sauce." cheese is just part of what's in the usual package.

Extra cheese and extra sauce is not 'a topping' because, think about it

If you ordered a vanilla ice cream cone and then said 'top it with more vanilla ice cream' you'd look insane. That's not a topping, that's just more vanilla ice cream. In the same way, 'extra cheese' is still a no-topping pizza, just more.

I mean in Italy there is no conception of toppings really theyre all just ingredients. Personally if its a solid that goes on top of the pizza base its a topping, so yes cheese no sauce.

Extra cheese because yes, pizza places list it as an "option" same as any other toppings, and you still have to pay for it

The other ones are less clear. I think I'm gonna vote for anchovies because of what someone said about their pop culture significance even if nobody actually eats it.

And then I guess mushrooms because I'll take people's word that it's the most popular non-meat.

Is the issue that it's more mozzarella? If you add asiago or feta to a pizza, is that not a topping because cheese is expected?

If you get a burger and add an extra patty, is that not an add-on either because the patty is expected?

if a pizza comes with a certain amount of something, and you get something else and put that on top, that's a topping, even if some of it is already on there.

If cheese is considered a default part of the "base" pizza, then you're putting an additional item on top of the base. The fact that the additional item is the same food that's also in the base shouldn't change that.

regardless of its validity, who is asking for extra cheese on their pizza in the first place? I've literally never seen anybody do this, including my brother who refused to eat pizza more complex than crust, sauce and cheese for a decade

If you order online from Pizza Hut or Dominoes, "Toppings" is a category apart from cheeses or sauce, which have a separate category that just says cheese and sauce.

Cheese Pizzas typically already have more cheese on them. Your probably only getting like 10% more cheese doing this if it's a typical chain
