Are people actually retiring at 65 anymore though? I mean other than State / Municipal / Military? (I'm not sure how military works, I assume you are life unless your body breaks and then you get a medical discharge).

My industry people work till they are too old to function and even then you can likely keep your job.

While the average retirement age has risen in the past few decades, I'm pretty sure the most common retirement age is still 62, which is the youngest that someone can start claiming social security (at a reduced monthly amount, obviously). Most people barely tolerate their jobs and will take the first reasonable opportunity to exit the rat race, even if it means reduced social security and permanently making do with less.

Keep in mind that seniors can only get Medicare at 65, so all those people retiring at 62 are doing so knowing that they'll need to spend three years figuring health insurance out on their own. And they still do it because they just wanna exit the workforce.

Ever since my dad got laid off and retired early at the start of the pandemic, I've been studying up on retirement planning to help my parents strategize for it. The one thing I advocate for vigorously is an expansion of Medicare to at least 62 (obviously I'd prefer Medicare for all, but I'm picking my battles here) so that it aligns with the earliest possible social security age. We'd see an explosion of 60-62 year old retirees, which would finally give Millennials and Gen Z a crack at meaningful career opportunities that still manage to evade them.

And it's not like the move would hurt businesses THAT much. A 60-year-old employee who's counting down the months to retirement is just someone who's gobbling up a fat paycheck and not contributing any innovation. Let them retire and bring in a 30-year-old (who might actually have some new ideas) to replace them.

The culture of lifelong corporate servitude really is the point.

Not an expert but my understanding is his party was in talks with three other parties, centrist-ish NSC, centre-right VVD (main governing party for ages) and agrarian BBB but they all ruled out him as PM and wanted none of the party leaders in cabinet. So it looks like theyre going ahead with a cabinet from outside the parliament. Probably the best reasonable outcome as it means there presumably wont be a far-right PM and he also wont be able to hide from blame in opposition.

You know it's kind of scary to think about, but i feel like if Merrick Garland was appointed to the Supreme Court, Trump would have won in 2020. And Garland has been such a huge disappointment.

Dutchman here. That is correct. Though Geert is 'subtly' blaming the BBB and NSC parties moreso and is already whining about this being against his constitutional rights. (Its not)
Man its a real pity he is the only actual party member of his party, or else he could have appointed one of his followers as PM instead.

Instead we now have weird requests that lead to the most popular candidate being someone from the left party???? (because he was the formateur, but still)

edit: Also they want to form an extra-parliamentary coalition between the 4 of them now, which is even harder to explain. Basically they cant align their interests no matter how hard they try, so instead they are just gonna rule on a broad strokes program (with more chances for input from outside the coalition) instead of an ironclad agreement plan.

Does that mean Netherlands is gonna be chill after all?

In regards to the whole "the DA and prosecutor were in a relationship!!!" thing that one of the defendants tried to blow up the case with - the judge has ruled (after a bunch of hearings) that there was no "actual conflict" on the part of the DA but because of the appearance of impropriety that either she or the prosecutor (Wade) had to leave the case.

As would be expected, Wade resigned effective immediately hours after the ruling.

Saw the NYT say that it would be up to the judge whether such an appeal would be heard immediately (and thus delay the trial even more) or only after the trial is had.
