Audience is for sure going to be in the 80-100% range. They just want to see Mario say Wahoo and Bowser go Brrrr whilst having it all look pretty. And that's what they're gonna get.
Is there even any appeal to Mario saying Wahoo if it's in Chris Pratt's voice?

Maybe people just like Chris Pratt? Maybe audiences will actually end up hating the movie when they find out that Chris Pratt isn't voicing every character.

Another reason this movie was never going to get a 95%+ score is people being biased against it from the start because of this...!

I don't think it's fair to call it bias. It just legitimately doesn't sound very good from the trailers. People seemed receptive to every other voice except Mario's.

I liked Chris Pratt's voice in The Lego Movie (I know he was playing an original character), but from the two or so trailers I have seen from this movie, it just doesn't work for me most of the time.

Yeah, but they aren't disliked the way Chris Pratt is by a lot of people

Like he had one or two lines in the original trailer and a bunch of people were immediately talking about what an awful fit he was

Definitely over 70. Apparently looking at $125m which would be on par with The Batman. Only GOTG3 this year feels like it is a sure bet to top that though a few others could also.

I wasn't sure where to put the number. It IS Easter weekend...if that makes a big difference. On the other hand, the movie is only 95 minutes (or so), which means a few extra screenings per day.

One of those was the Mario line though. The one you'd absolutely not want to mess up when putting out a trailer of one of the most iconic characters in history. Who already has a similarly iconic voice to draw inspiration from. Like...that was their best foot forward?

It's not like people were wrong, either. Pratt was bad in the second trailer too.

Eh, I think a lot of it is confirmation bias because people hated the announcement of Pratt as Mario before they ever heard him say a single line, too. I think he's been fine, but people want him to sound like Charles Martinet and that was never going to happen.

(It's okay for Mario not to sound like Charles Martinet, too. The original Mario cartoon voice was just fine, and it sounds more like Chris Pratt than Charles Martinet)

There might be some confirmation bias, but I think you're really underselling people just straight-up not liking the voice. Maybe it ends up fine in the actual movie, but every example they've put out has not been questionable at best. It doesn't have to be Charles Martinet, but it still has to be good. And it's not.

Maybe, but the context for my post was "people just want to see Mario go Wahoo" and I think I'm theoretically someone who could be taken in by that, except this movie doesn't have Mario saying wahoo, it has Chris Pratt doing it. Like, Mario's voice is only a draw for me if it's actually Mario's voice, and I can't imagine I'm the only one.

I also agree with Ermine and Para (and by extension, KP). I don't like how harshly people treat critics when it comes to things like this, by and large they know what they are doing. They didn't come into the Mario movie looking for Tokyo Story, they were looking for a good entertaining family adventure movie and half of them didn't find one. Mario games are light breezy adventures and critics still adore them because they're well crafted and fun!

Personally the weirdest thing I've learned from the reviews is that they drop a lot of random '80s songs into this. Why does a Mario movie need Take on Me or Holding Out for a Hero? So strange.

Are people saying that there's absolutely no way possible for a Mario Movie to get 95%+ by both critics and audience?

Oh not at all, I just think pretty early it didn't look like this was it. It was always a long shot but when they began doing Mario Kart in the middle of it I think I pretty quickly realized it would not a movie with any deeper messages or anything, so at that point I thought the best thing it could be was a movie filled with love for this universe.

If it's a not an entertaining family adventure movie unless you have some knowledge of the Mario universe but is if you do, then I'm more than satisfied with that personally, though it's obviously a shame in the grand scheme of things.

I'm not trying to downplay critics at all (except the one that says it's worse than the 1993 movie because jfc there's just no way that person actually thinks so), I think most of the reviews are likely spot on or close to in their points, but they are looking for things in a movie I don't think it ever needed. I only posted to begin with here because the first many posts in here read like the reviews were all terrible and the movie was definitely bad, the first is wrong and the second is, well, I don't think you can reasonably draw that conclusion from this.

Yeah I think in terms of animation critics tend to get it right. When I say audiences are going to like it a lot I dont mean theyll think its the best film ever I mean they just want to see a competent animated film with Mario in it. Again these reviews are not *bad* just middling overall.

The 'as expected' says a lot, this stuff seems to be becoming more and more standard. Someone screenshot the credits, I guess Nint 'owns' the songs so doesn't legally need to credit anyone but it seems really out of place and a deliberate omission. (Spoilers for songs that are in the movie)

Children and the parents who have to take them to the movies deserve actual effort. There are a ton of great works targeted at children, so it's annoying when a major production clearly puts in little effort because it's coasting on branding.

Taking audience scores on RT seriously is a terrible idea and always has been. The new Ant-Man movie has an audience RT score in the 80s, and yet it managed to not only tie Eternals for the worst Cinemascore in the entire MCU, it also managed to have the biggest second-weekend drop in the franchise's history. This with its main second weekend competition being COCAINE BEAR (contrast this with, say, The Last Jedi, whose second weekend saw the releases of both The Greatest Showman and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, either of which frankly had more mainstream appeal than anything the Abrams Wars movies faced). Heck, we could even talk about how Black Widow's audience RT score is way higher than Captain Marvel's, and yet both movies imdb scores are nigh-identical.

Even though verified RT audience score is a million times better than the old system, you need to look at those scores on a scale and by genre not objectively. A low 80s score for Quantumania is pretty meh for a blockbuster and given time it will likely fall to around Eternals verified score of 77%. People who take the time to not only buy an early ticket but register their ticket with RT are much more likely to have liked a film. There are some who have worked out a correlation between RT verified audience score and Cinemascore and it usually tracks very closely.
