9/10 Probably the most easy to follow Soulsborne game overall - which is a good thing. Everything here is just super compelling, the lore is obscured enough to be rewarding to uncover but obtuse enough to always feel like you never have the whole picture and it constantly leaves you hungry for more and to understand it all. Just a lot of super weird, high concept horror & fantasy beats here. Way more memorable characters than usual too, and the pseudo-quest lines followed strictly on your own volition are a triumph of a freeform choice and consequence approach that don't feel in any way shoehorned or artificial or forced. If anything, the way quest storylines are approached leave you constantly second-guessing yourself if you're truly on the right path, and it leaves so much room for interpretation. However I will say the endings leave a lot to be desired unfortunately. Nevertheless, a lot of big impressive world building stuff that constantly sucked me in at every turn. Village doesn't take itself seriously at all, to the point that everything story-wise feels meaningless and/or cartoony. RE7 struck a good balance between serious and campy, but Village leans too hard into the camp department for my tastes. There are too many wacky ideas crammed together here, and I can only watch Ethan get dismembered so many time before I start rolling my eyes. 4 I'll quote a recent discussion I had in comparing Elden Ring with Outer Wilds and how they tell stories. I feel it's relevant. And it will also be contrasting one of my first ratings with my very last! Outer Wilds is my favorite video game narrative of all time (and game in general), and is a perfect example of a story told in a way that could only be done through this medium. Elden Ring...is not that. I couldn't tell you a damn thing that happened in this game, other than I killed a bunch of dudes and became the Elden Lord. It's just "obtuse for the sake of being obtuse" to me. Still a masterpiece of a video game, but I feel like Outer Wilds is the quintessential example of what I look for in nonlinear storytelling, and a game like Elden Ring is the exact opposite. I also have no problem with Elden Ring being nominated [this is about The Game Awards] if people really feel the lore is good enough. Just to me, it's not a particularly good example of a game using the medium to tell the story. The mysteries and later, revelations, of Outer Wilds are compelling throughout the whole experience. The ambiguity and obtuseness of Elden Ring felt exactly like that, and were never compelling at all to me. I dunno, just my personal feelings. --- Feel the sadnesss of the Earth, and I close my eyes. 9/10 - I love the approach they took with the worldbuilding, which I've heard best described as "GRRM built this world and From Software shattered it." This feels like a legitimately rich mythos in a way that Dark Souls was only able to scratch at. The massive world is held up by the story as memorable characters intersect with you at all points, and there's a real "wow" factor when you reach an important place or face an important boss. It's a suitably grandly woven fabric for the bonkers scale of game they made here. This has been a super fun topic series. Story isn't something I usually prioritize when rating games in most genres so it's been a really cool exercise to put this in a vacuum and really think about what works and what doesn't. --- Let the voice of love take you higher, With this gathering power, go beyond even time! ... What interests me is how GRRM had a hand in stuff that seemed pretty typical From Software like the name of The Lands Between. He also came up with the demigods powers and the characters themselves though their mobster forms were all From Software. Of course thats not to put it all on GRRM as the dev did a terrific job fleshing out the present day world and actually writing it.
