Saw an article the other day about how you CAN NOT move to Florida right now because it has been named "THE MOST EXPENSIVE PLACE TO LIVE IN AMERICA".

Florida is notorious for being cheap. You don't even pay income tax there. It might be the cheapest place to live in America.

Florida Man.

Florida Man is actually an argument in favor of the idea that people unfairly shit on Florida.

You don't hear all those crazy stories because they happen more often in Florida (they don't - crazy shit is constantly happening in every state and in most other countries), it's just that most states don't talk about it. But Florida actually has a law that makes it mandatory for them to publicly publish all court cases, so you hear about every crazy in Florida.

In other words, the only reason Florida winds up looking like they have so many crazy people is they're essentially the only ones not covering up cases or lying about them. For all you know, you've got a few "Florida Men" right around the corner from where you live, but you'll never know about it because your local government is deliberately hiding it from you.

Sort of like how the Spanish Flu only became known as the Spanish Flu because the Spanish were pretty much the only nation on Earth that wasn't lying about their casualty numbers. Everyone else was involved in WWI and had a vested interest in hiding just how bad things were to keep morale up, but Spain was a neutral nation so they made the mistake of reporting accurate data. So in spite of literally having lower numbers than nearly every other major developed nation, the perception was that they had a disproportionately high casualty rate.

The math for NY might be deceptive, though.

The average there is probably being pulled up massively and disproportionately by the ridiculous cost of living in NYC (and especially Manhattan), while the rest of the state is nowhere near as bad.

Though that's admittedly true for California as well - the major cities are going to skew hard compared to the rest of the state.

that's because disney was taking care of all the town maintenance, they fixed the roads, they kept things looking great

but desantis decided to, uh, not let disney do that anymore because they said he was stupid for the dont say gay bill, which they are correct about, but that caused desantis to get petty and remove disneys special status, so now the state of florida has to take care of everything, everyone who lives there now have to pay so, so much more in taxes, while essentially giving disney a gigantic tax break.

oh, and florida has to pay disney several billion dollars because of a clause in the contract that states if their special status were to go away, florida would owe them several billion dollars

oh, but also desantis said that the people who live there wouldn't feel any effects of it, but that's obviously not true. so when pressed for information on what they're going to do to solve this issue, they released a press statement that was just "it's fine, trust me bro" and told people that the plan to fix this would come in a few weeks

so, to sum up

disney got a tax break, taxpayers got heavily fucked over, the state of florida got fucked over, they don't have a plan on how they're going to fix their fuckup in regards to the people who live there, but desantis gets to feel good because he "punished" disney for speaking out against his don't say gay bill

It doesn't really matter whether or not the coins are stolen. You still need to find a buyer who actually appreciates the appraised value of the coins and is willing to pay that amount. The average person can't just walk into their local cash-for-gold dealer or pawn shop and have the person behind the counter pull out a copy of Numismatics Monthly and offer you $30k for them. You need to go through specialist dealers.

High-end collector value items in general are hard as fuck to sell. Because you generally have to go through tons of channels that the average person doesn't really have access to and won't necessarily know how to get in touch with. Which is why appraised value for "collectors' items" can be misleading as hell - you may never be able to get that much for them if you can't find a buyer.

I can own a pristine mint condition copy of Action Comics #1, but unless I can find someone who is actually aware of what it tends to go for and is willing to pay that much, it's not much more than pretty toilet paper. The more expensive the item, the harder it becomes to sell.

So yes, for a criminal looking for a quick buck, it's still generally more efficient to just sell off for a minimal amount than to try and full collector value. Because you're at least getting some money out of it, which is more than you had when you started. Rather than going to the trouble of trying to get in touch with specialist dealers, which can actually increase the odds that you'll eventually be pegged for the initial theft.

There's a reason why a fence is a very legitimate and real profession.

Art theft has a similar issue where high profile buyers are hard af to actually talk to, and they don't want to buy random pieces of artwork, they want specific things. Plus art verification is more or less who you can pay to do it, the entire thing is basically a shitshow from day one.
Things that are wildly expensive are generally expensive for the air behind it, not the inherent value of a piece of parchment with some paint on it.

Think of someone stealing a showmanship german shepard puppy. It doesn't mean shit unless you have papers to back up that claim.

A lot of the Florida hate is just weird, especially considering it's nowhere near the worst state in the country. You'd have to get rid of at least 10 or 15 states before it might even enter the discussion.

The American government somehow trudges on despite frequently breaking its laws. Probably because the US has a proud tradition of locking up whistleblowers (who it sometimes tortures), raiding news offices, tapping journalists' phones, and spying on all of its citizens' emails.
