Harry Potter might be a double "man child" plus "supports TERF author".

Da Vinci Code I could only really see as "basic bitch" stuff, but even that's a stretch.

Man catcher in the rye is a classic. You can respect how good it is without thinking Holden Caulfield is a good role model or wanting to be him or something. Other than that I don't care about the others

I take these kinda surface level "red flags" with a grain of salt.

I haven't read it in a long time but Holden Caulfield seems like an average teenager. Like the type who would think way too highly of himself on reddit or CE today.

I have The Sun Also Rises because I had to read it for school. What was so bad about it again? I don't remember a thing besides sort of liking it. Oh, it's snobbish? ....ok. I have the first 5 HP books too from when I was a tween-teen. None are my favorites.

First the headline says its red-flag books men shouldnt own but the article clearly states its books that are red flags if they are your favorite. A very different thing.

i havent read most of those but whats wrong with harry potter, fight club (assuming its based on the movie?), the da vinci code, etc?
and even other ones like twilight, albeit terrible, who really cares?

and the worst ones on the list like mein kampf still have historical value and you dont need to agree with whats in the book in order to read it. although depending on the person i will submit that it is a red flag sometimes but not always

Only things I can think of would be:

1. The casual racism. Which, yeah, it's there.
2. Maybe they see what Lenny did to Cirley's wife as some sort of unwitting sexual assault? A reach, but I've seen bigger reaches from some crowds.
3. On the note of Lenny, his condition making him a threat/danger to everyone around him probably isn't looked on too fondly, these days.

4. Maybe they somehow think the ending was being glorified? The "right" move? Some people lack basic reading comprehension, so the implocations/messaging may be lost on them.

I dont think any of these reasons are particularly strong. But a lot of people have a "shoot first, ask questions later" mentality when it comes to art criticism, these days.
