This is such a tryhard mix of books that have genuinely awful messages (Atlas Shrugged) and books that are just sub-par (Twilight, Da Vinci Code) and books that are classic but people have gotten sick of (Of Mice and Men, Catcher in the Rye)

Some of these make sense because the list apparently was pulled from mumsnet so its very surface level nimby "these books were written by mean people so they are bad" energy. Others are very confusing. Why are they so upset about postmodernism? What's wrong with A Little Life? Who would walk into someone's house and see The Sun Also Rises and be upset somehow outside of like the world's most panic-prone lit student?

I've read 10 of those. I own Ulysses and A Little Life, but I haven't read A Little Life because it was just a random book given to me by a friend. Pretty insecure list honestly. Some books kinda make sense, but other books like Lolita are too complex apparently. And I say this as someone who hates Lolita.

Only things I can think of would be:

1. The casual racism. Which, yeah, it's there.
2. Maybe they see what Lenny did to Cirley's wife as some sort of unwitting sexual assault? A reach, but I've seen bigger reaches from some crowds.
3. On the note of Lenny, his condition making him a threat/danger to everyone around him probably isn't looked on too fondly, these days.

4. Maybe they somehow think the ending was being glorified? The "right" move? Some people lack basic reading comprehension, so the implocations/messaging may be lost on them.

I dont think any of these reasons are particularly strong. But a lot of people have a "shoot first, ask questions later" mentality when it comes to art criticism, these days.

Ok that makes sense.

Personally I think Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead and Anthem are pretty interesting. Probably in part because those can at least be interpreted as more/something else than just Rand's idea of 'pure capitalism is utopia and everyone should just be selfish for the sake of being selfish'.

The whole message of Atlas Shrugged is just that and nothing but that, which is pretty ironic considering it has more pages than those other two books combined.

Why would Catcher in The Rye be there though?

One of the greatest books of all time imo

It's the quickest way to weed out a pseudo fan of literature if their reason for declaring it a bad book is "the main character is annoying". He's a heavily troubled 17 year old. It's similar to hating on taxi driver as a movie because Travis Bickle is a psycho. Main characters aren't necessarily meant to be the author's idea of a good person but some people think otherwise

Topic is misleading. It's not owning the book but calling it your favorite which is the turn off apparently. Under that, I can definitely see why things like DaVinci Code and Harry Potter would be on there, especially for anyone who isn't a teenager. Don't quite get Of Mice and Men though still. I remember reading it in high school and don't recall anything particularly torrid about it or whatever.

I'm defending this book a lot but I love it and see way too much hate for it online. It usually boils down to seeing Holden as pretentious or over opinionated, ignoring the reasons he's the way he is.

It has amazing dialogue which is no small thing (a lot of the characters in the book dislike Holden as much as some readers which is made clear in the hyper realistic conversations) and is also very ahead of it's time in the way it deals with the issue of mental health. In some ways it seems like it could have been written yesterday, but is in fact a 70 yr old book

The whole point of the book is that the main character is an overly negative kid with clear mental problems, and for the most part, you arent supposed to relate to him, but perhaps pity him, or even hate him.
