Following a year where the vote totals held steady from the previous year, I really thought we had finally hit rock bottom and reached a stabilization point with our vote totals. Turns out that wasn't the case. Perhaps the first year of the COVID pandemic played a role in preventing vote totals from dropping in 2020 compared to our 2019 vote totals. Maybe it was likely that was just a temporary trend, and the normal trend of declining vote totals would return when the world finally got somewhat back to normal (with the vaccines).

Just like how it's very difficult to predict what the COVID virus is going to do in the future, it's also quite difficult to predict our vote totals will change in the future as well. Only one thing is certain so far with our vote totals, and that's the continuation of a declining trend. I've given up trying to predict when this trend will come to a stop, either by reaching a point where vote totals have finally stabilized or even an increase in vote totals.

December 2021 was the first full month where every single poll got below 10000 votes. You have to go all way back to September 2000 for the previous time that happened in a single month.

Actually pretty good showing from It Takes Two here. Seems to be getting an awards boost, well deserved I have to say.

Yeah I figured Deathloop would take this but cool.

My hot predix for the sequels and spinoffs poll is a shockingly good performance for Forza Horizon 5. Though Halo Infinite could dampen that.

Found this poll when searching for polls that RE8 had been in, and wow did 2021 miss out on a lot. Elden Ring, God of War Ragnarok, Horizon 2, and Breath of the Wild 2 - all delayed.

If Tales of Arise can outright beat RE8, then I can't help but feel SMTV would have done some real damage here in this poll.

I always imagined those two games would be of similar strength but given how wrong I was about RE8 maybe I'm way off here as well.

To be fair, RE8 could still be the second strongest game of the year. This is more Metroid Dread impressing

Is this a bad result for Tales of Arise? Other than Symphonia, Tales gales do really badly.

I think we all knew Dread was taking GotY overall, now the only question is if it wins Game of the Year decisively enough that Bacon doesn't bother with a 1v1.

Metroid's 2nd GOTY coming up.

Forza Horizon 5 is the biggest snub here. It would probably beat everything below Tales of Arise and Resident Evil Village if 3 and 4s performance is anything to go off of - 4 beat Monster Hunter World and you would think this one would be the strongest yet.

BD2 being in this poll is kinda weird since I thought the game wasn't well received

Yeah, I'd consider this a solid showing for Arise.

Welp, here's your GotY-poll.

For remakes/remasters tomorrow (assuming Luster's theory about last year's pattern is right for this year), SM3DW + Bowser's Fury versus Demon's Souls is the battle I expect to see.

Demons Souls was last year. It'll be between SM3DW, SSHD, BDSP, Nier, ME Legendary and some other ones I'm forgetting.

Wow, I thought REV had a chance of beating Dread. I was way off. I guess voters who haven't played much this year are just treating them as proxies for Super Metroid and RE7, which devastates Village's chances.

...I still really like Village.

Eh I was paying attention the reception of the games and RE8 was nowhere near 7 in popularity.

RE8 hit 5 million copies faster than every RE game in the past decade did, plus had big tit vampire memes taking over every social media site out there, and it's usually ranked more highly than 7 with fans. Outside of this website, RE8 smashes 7 in like... every metric. And even with RE fans on this site, I'd say 8 is more warmly received than 7 is from what I've seen over the months.

None of this really matters for the poll, since Metroid was always going to stomp on this website, but still.

RE7 got a better critical reception, but I feel like RE8 got a better fan reception.

its also not on the switch so that kinda kills its chances on this website

7 took a while to get a large audience. It sold quite slowly as a result of the backlash to 6. However it is now right up there and I would take current 7 over Village.

I was gonna mention this but hype has little to do with how well it's received.

What I kept hearing in direct comparison was that it was a more action-oriented game and 7 was praized for bringing horror back. I haven't heard this "fans like it more" take yet but I guess some people believe it. I can see it also being a case of a good sequel just getting less buzz for being a sequel.

RE8's closer to RE4 in vibe which is enough for me to believe its stronger on this site.

TGAAC was never originally released in the US, so I don't think it counts, but it's the only one there I played, so it got my vote.

Hey Psychonauts 2 beat Halo and Resident Evil Village ended up being second. Still disappointed that Shin Megami Tensei V got snubbed.
