Including all expansions was a plus too, at least for new players, but yeah, ME1 definitely benefitted the most from it. IIRC they all ran pretty s*** on Playstation before compared to PC/Xbox.

Tony hawk shouldn't be on the poll. Came out last year. Defeats the whole purpose of yearly awards.

But having said that if it finishes above zelda it's all good

They were ported to ps3 way after and ps3 was a nightmare for multiplats in general.

Considering Tony Hawk did have a release this year and the category is basically releases, I'd say it's okay, at least when I can't think of a snub.

SSHD being meh shouldn't be too surprising after how bad Groose and FFXV bombed.

This is exactly why I wanted it in the first place. Not everything has to be put in because you think it could be the next winner.

Skyward Sword, strong? Seems unlikely.
Skyward Sword, among the top 128 strongest games of last decade? Thats not a high bar at all but that seems extremely probable.

I mean, Skyward Sword probably would have done 'well' in the sense that there were a lot of fourpacks in the main bracket it probably wins easily.

Yeah, Skyward Sword could've been a top 20 game in GotD2 just because of how diluted the field was.

Even more interesting imo is FF13

SBAllen had a hidden series limit of 2 games which effected Mario/Zelda/Final Fantasy from getting a third game (before anyone mentions it, Mario Kart is considered different from Mario). Even if they would have done a lot better.

I just find it hard to believe FF14 and FF15 can get 5 seeds while FF13 is completely left out. At least with Mario you could argue that with so many options (NSMBU, 3DLand, 3DWorld) on top of Odyssey and Galaxy 2 being the clear preferred options that they could LFF each other out of a contest spot.

I think those games genuinely didn't get enough nominations to make the bracket whereas all the weakass indie games had devoted fans who nominated them in. It's like how Resident Evil 5 barely made the GOTD1 field and then turned out to be one of the strongest games in the bracket anyway, except there it was coasting on recency.

Hard to imagine zelda doesn't get enough nominations, but I can see it if nominations were just abysmally low

I imagine B8 had a lot of influence on the contest and this place certainly doesn't have much love for FFXIII or Skyward Sword

I still haven't read a reasonable explanation for the scenario where 999 and VLR each made 2015 as 15-seeds, then VLR went up to a 10-seed in 2020 even as 999 missed the field entirely. An unpublicized two-game-per-series cap obviously doesn't help, and I have an extremely hard time believing the two games naturally went on totally different nomination trajectories. As far as I see it, Allen either filtered out lesser installments of series in some less obvious way, or he overlooked 999 being a 2010 release in North America, unlike Bayonetta and HGSS.

For what it's worth, the other three 2015 entrants to miss 2020 were Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and Splatoon (obviously obsoleted by their respective follow-ups) and Super Mario Maker (likely obsoleted by its sequel, which perhaps was subsequently subjected to whatever Allen did to flush out overrepresented franchises). I can believe that ZTD likewise affected 999 more than VLR for whatever reason, but it having done so to the extent 2020 implied at face value seems unlikely.

Allen had to know BotW would dominate, so he probably tried to mitigate the Zelda domination as much as possible, such as ensuring Link Between Worlds would be eliminated early.

It was a GotY winner, so probably. It got as far as most expected though!

And Allen confined a lot of Nintendo to the top part of the bracket. He did something similar in the first GotD where the first division had virtually no Nintendo in it.

Seeding probably doesnt necessarily relate to nominations that closely.

CATS is maybe the most ridiculous example. Did CATS really suck just enough from nominations alone to consistently get exactly a 16 seed three character battles in a row but then when the field gets almost cut in half by the female bracket he still has enough to squeak into the field in 2006 when Donkey Kong, Knuckles, Kefka, Magus, Frog, Vercetti, Liquid Snake, and Revolver Ocelot couldnt? Obviously not. Either his joke nomination support back then was way better than his seeding suggested but CJayC set him to 16 because its friggin CATS or he just got thrown into 2006 despite lacking support because CJayC thought his presence was funny.

If only FFXV was in the other half of its division, watching it go into the contest as the favorite over DQXI only to get blown out of the water by it would have been awesome.

It already almost lost to Hollow Knight and would probably lose a rematch.

Also, I highly doubt the Noble Nine were the nine most nominated characters that year. I figure some of those 2 seeds out nominated at least a couple N9ers.

The game limit is BS. If there's more than 2 games from the same series, put them up against each other early or in the same bracket. Would love to have seen SS get absolutely destroyed by BOTW. Or better yet...have Turd matchup of the contest in that bracket with SS vs FFXV. SS obviously wins because FFXV is horrible.

I enjoyed FF13. Clearly a mess of a game in terms of story but at least it was focused...even if ridiculously linear. I still think FF LR has the best battle system of any FF game to date.

The characters and story are horrible but game was fun

FFXV has some of the worst combat in any JRPG ever made. Its an absolute mess of incoherent random shite. Story and characters weren't great either and an open world that was so poorly designed it makes even bad ubisoft open world games look good.

Everything so far is following the schedule from last year.

Voted for series x. Easily my most played in terms of games and had one of the best games of the year in forza. Played all multiplats on it.

Lol at switch getting thst many votes. It's had a garbage year.

It's had an alright year of releases. Couple that with the other consoles and PC hardware market being fucked, and the Switch being the only console even attempting exclusives last year, I don't think it's unreasonable for it to be winning.

I think the most ridiculous thing in GotD2 if you believe everything is just nominations was that only a single Pokmon game made the bracket but then made it as a 3 seed. There is no way that split fanbase decided so heavily on the games that are easy to miss was actually from the right decade as they are 2009 in Japan. Most Pokmon fans likely nominated more than one entry too. Allen probably just thought Pokmon only needed one representation while the other seemingly capped franchises have more diverse games releases and/or had more A++ releases.

Yeah Switch had a good year though not a great one. Playstation is absolutely being hurt by how impossible it is to get one. I went with PC although that issue is there as well.

2021 in general is probably one of the weakest years in gaming all around, understandably, so I'm not sure what deserves the vote here.

Switch is probably getting props just because of Metroid Dread.

So any predictions for GotY tomorrow? For me...

Metroid Dread finishes first with around 38% of the vote. I think the placement of Resident Evil Village will have the most variability. I have no faith in the games from the New Franchise poll. The vote total alone confirms the competition in that poll was really weak.

Not as close as I once thought it'd be!

Not sure yet if this is strength from MD (my guess) or weakness from 2021. I don't expect MD to touch the likes of LoZ:BotW/SSBU/SMO and it may not quite reach MK8D either, but I'd bet on it beating the likes of AC:NH and FE:3H.
