Poll of the Day > YouTube is removing the public "dislike" counter

Thoughts?

On one hand, small channels will be less vulnerable to unfair dislikes from trolls. Also, foreign owned bot accounts won't be able to mass spam the dislike button on news videos with the intention of swaying public perception.

On the other hand, the dislike ratio for things like help/DIY videos is super useful, as it tells me immediately whether the video is worth my time.

Yeah. I think it can be useful for certain things. Like you said, we hit comes to DIY (or anything else where Im watching for help), it can help to know how useful others found it

It can also help content creators when deciding what type of videos to make, tbh

It's fucking terrible, I hate it

Blatantly obvious it's because of all the instances of big corporations posting unpopular videos and getting down voted to hell over them.

And they claim it's for the sake of the mental health of content creators or whatever... But the dislikes aren't actually going away, they're becoming "private", so the general populace can't see the number. So, the only one who CAN still see it... is the content creator himself/herself. Riiiiiight...

I've found the dislike counter helpful in giving away clickbait bullshit. I guess I'll just need to read comments on unfamiliar posters videos.

Wait, so it's only going to include likes? What kind of metric is that if you can't compare it to dislikes? Besides, I thought uploaders had the option to disable ratings anyway.

Quite obviously a move aimed at minimizing public negative feedback for cooperate marketing in general.

No more news articles about "most disliked video on youtube" or "company's marketing video getting mass disliked".

Funnily enough, I think google's own video youtube rewind is included in that category (although they've gotten rid of it since it became blatantly obvious the rewind is now just fake advertisement for advertisers).

VideoboysaysCube posted...

They do, but you never want to disable the likes/dislikes or the comments unless you are getting mass negative feedback and want to hide it, because those systems count as engagement for the youtube algorithm, and everyone assumes if those systems are disabled by choice, it was because of mass negative feedback anyway, so the fact there is negative feedback isn't really being hidden.

It's absolutely unjustifiable. The only people who benefit from this are companies who don't want to have the obvious "ratings disabled" pop up and snow flakes. Neither should be catered to.

They've been talking about this for a while now, because the corporate overlords don't like people being able to leave negative feedback.

But it's not like it's been working the way it should for a while now anyway. Because even negative votes count as "engagement", which means massively downvoted videos are actually more likely to get recommended to people because of how the shit algorithm works.

So rather than fixing their shitty algorithm, they just disable parts of the system that they don't know how to properly handle?

Yep, that sounds like Google to me.

So of course they would remove it....

they always have

as soon as they started being a platform for more mainstream content they totally changed their playbook and smaller creators have to play by a much different and more challenging set of rules compared to talk show hosts and other massively popular things that have made their way to youtube

and yeah if something will help their bottom line they put it as trending regardless of their algorithm

That is unfortunate. The like and dislike bar is the easiest way to tell if a video is good or bad most of the time. What I mean is, videos that have to deliver(like, a sick magic trick, a fail compilation, etc) are actually generally not very good if the ratio is off.

The following is a brief list of things I'd rather they remove instead.
Advertising.
The YouTube TV trial that pops up in the corner of the screen.
That blue box that says I'm not signed in.
That other blue box that points out the Join button.
That bar that shows up at the bottom of the video when I pause it trying to read something, which is now obscured by the bar.
That miniature player that pops up after I leave the page and continues the video I didn't want to finish.

I'm also annoyed at creators who talk about the percentage of viewers who aren't subscribed and fail to realize that those viewers don't have an account, thus they can't subscribe.

YouTube, as much as Facebook, Twitter, and most social media platform, have shown in the last years or so that they are nothing but tools of the left. Considering they are going out of their way to try and censor ANYTHING that criticized all (and that's a lot) of Biden's failures, more recently as any form of defense of Rittenhouse, or promoting the usual woke garbage, this doesn't come as a surprise to anyone capable of any form of thought.

I mean, if you want to get a pulse of what the world thinks of the woke (not the reasonable part) of leftist ideologies, just look at the usual upvote/downvote on the sjw garbage such as :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dj10S5oqSOU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FpbxiAUSW8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwvAgDCOdU4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koPmuEyP3a0

Or any recent YouTube yearly highlight reel. I could link garbage for a while which all received gigantic downvote ratios. The majority of the world are tired of woke garbage that YouTube tries to promote and removing the downvote option was another step at public censorship being enforced by leftist ideologies. "Don't like our brand of garbage? Then we'll disallow you a way of saying you don't like it."
