I like to support the local athletes that work extremely hard to be used as pawns in international power plays beyond their understanding.

The IOC is a toxic entity, the idea of the Olympics is admirable, but the amount of money that just disappears into partners pockets is absurd.

The worst part is that all of the cities/nations that fight so hard to try and bribe the IOC into naming them a host city don't even benefit from it, because for the last few decades it seems like no one ever recoups enough money from the Olympics to pay for the Olympics. So they all wind up in debt, with these arenas that just wind up rotting where they stand, and with no real way to ever make back the money they've spent (wasted).

And it's not even like there's an argument that they gain prestige or influence based on having been a host city, because people these days barely give a shit, and rarely even remember who the past host cities were.

Rio de Janeiro: most of the venues were abandoned to the jungle within six months of the closing ceremonies.

In Calgary, the Saddledome, meant to house hockey events for the winter Olympics, the unique design meant the roof could not support the weight of the larger jumbotrons let alone some of the light rigs the larger bands use; the city is in negotiations with the billionaire owners over how much the public is going to pay for the replacement.

No, although I've occasionally meant to tune in for the martial competitions

I generally haven't been into real athletics. And even I'm into a show or movie revolving around the sport, the stuff about the sport kinda starts to lose me.

And yet to many people get the answers right when they come up on Jeopardy >_>

That said, a lot of the hosts don't really need the buzz because they're already prestigious cities (although some want it to make themselves look like they're on the same level as other places -- like Salt Lake City), but some countries want to legitimize themselves by hosting the Olympics or the world cup.

That's because people on Jeopardy are nerds who know all sorts of things no one else on Earth gives a shit about.

And I say that as someone who used to want to get onto Jeopardy.

Yeah, but the point is that there's really only two reasons to want to be a host city/nation - either increased prestige, or increased tourism money. Neither of which seems to actually pay off for anyone anymore, thus raising the question of why anyone bothers at this point.

It kind of feels like people are still chasing after their memory of the way things used to be more than the reality of today. Which raises the question of what happens once people start waking up and realizing just how pointless it is to chase after the "honor".

Almost everything in Japan is a cartoon. They re-enact everything on the news with either CG or animation of some kind. Even their delineators in construction zones are little anime characters.
