Yahoo chat rooms

Msn Messenger

Starcraft 1 B.net, fantastically unique UMS maps (which birthed precursors to MOBA games, either League or DOTA I forget which, but was based off a Starcarft UMS called Reign of Strife which later became a WC3 map)

When Facebook was actually good

Aliens Versus Predator 1 on PC, esp multiplayer, ssooooooo good

Nearly all of my gaming or internet memories are "back in my day" memories.

I started using Telnet to log in to BBSes and occasionally used Lynx to browse the text-based Internet (NOT the Web).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynx_(web_browser)

I didn't actually see the Web until college, when I started using Netscape to visit sites here and there (and eventually made my own, and a bunch for other people, and a few for pay, etc, back when you basically coded the entire page with prompts and tags in Notepad).

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. A sea of gifs and hit counters on Geocities. I watched endless <blink> glitter in the dark on every page. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Some of my fondest memories came from gaming in Ultima Online. I remember at one point I had joined a semi-random shard and was walking around doing my thing when I ran across someone on the north side of Britain that had the same handle that one of my real life friends used. So I started chatting with him and sure the fuck enough it happened to be him. It was an incredibly bizarre coincidence.

But my 'back in my day' memory would be the instruction booklets that came with games. Busting them out and reading them when I was bored, or driving home from the store with a brand new game and being so excited that I just wanted to get right into it. Looking at the incredibly cool artwork. etc.

Unless you're over the age of 50, that's not actually true. And you'd probably have to be at least 60 to consider an Internet-less age "back in your day".

Back in your day there was probably no World Wide Web (which didn't exist until 1991), but that's slightly different.

TyVulpine posted...

The Internet existed in the 1980s. Granted, most people (especially kids) didn't know about it (though it was more common on college/university campuses), but it was there. It didn't really have the massive boom of public awareness/use until the creation of the World Wide Web and the rise of services like Prodigy, CompuServe, and AOL in the mid-90s, but the infrastructure itself was there and plenty of people were using it (via things like BBSes and Usenet) for years.

Having lived through it, I'd argue that the "Internet Age" didn't really kick off hard until around 2000 or so (give or take a year). But anyone growing up in the wake of that (say, anyone who's 25 or younger today) really won't have any idea what it was like growing up in a world where the Internet wasn't a universal presence.

I mean, I still play Runescape (Old School). But it hit different back in 2004.

I saw another player get killed by a guard in one of the cities and the player dropped a ton of runes and money. Well, it seemed like a ton for a new player.

Holy shit, this reminded me of a long forgotten memory. The Cartoon Network website let users create their own little webpages by picking a background and putting animated stickers that played music and stuff. I don't remember what it was called.
