Been reading The Promised Neverland manga.

One thing I can say so far is that the story after the end of the anime season 1 is so different from the first arc of the series that I feel like it really doesn't matter if it was changed for the anime. If the content itself is just worse then that's one thing, but because of the way the story is set up and how heavy a factor mystery is I feel like you could follow the first arc up with basically anything and have it work about the same from a cohesion standpoint. And there's nothing so far about the story that has made me think "of course they were going in this direction all along", or anything, though I guess I am only 2 or 3 volumes after where season 1 ended?

Story is solid so far. Can't really comment too well though since it's been mostly setup and I haven't gotten to any of the (presumed) payoff.

It wasn't just "changed" for the anime, it was cut up and butchered. The direction and pacing is terrible, and even if you completely ignore everything that was cut and try to take it on it's own merit as an individual product, it's just bad.

Yes, the core story is a departure from the first season SIGNIFICANTLY to begin with, but that has nothing to do with everyone dunking on season 2. It is a horrific adaptation. Every episode makes it more and more clear that they had absolutely no idea what they were doing.

Yeah if it was just doing an OG FMA thing it could be fine, but it seems like it's just trying to fast forward to later manga stuff without doing any of the work to get there.

Oh, yeah, in case that was a misconception very little in the anime is changed in the sense that it's different stuff. They're just taking a bunch of shit out and going hyperspeed.

Similar. Route A was even more confusing though, due Pierrot not even playing by their OWN rules as far as how it was continuing. Tokyo Ghoul's anime situation may be more of an overall confusing mess, but I would say the actual product of Neverland 2 here is definitely worse as far as just being a show.

Another confusing thing here is....the season is almost over. There's definitely not gonna be another one. They skipped all this stuff, accelerated it it to such a degree, but there still definitely not enough time to wrap it up? Like, are they going to skip that much stuff, spend 2.5 episode after a recap episode talking in a room, and STILL have to hardcore rush the ACTUAL ending? Or are they going to go full anime original ending? If so, then what was the point of keeping so much of the last part but completely screwing it up?

There is absolutely not even remotely enough content for a season 3 at this point, unless they are planning on making an almost entirely original season.

After what a shitshow this has been, even if this was all some ploy to get to a huge surprise post manga continuation of PM inside a 3rd a season of anime, their gambit failed big time.

And if it actually IS banking on making an entire 3rd season out of the remaining manga content...that's going to be its own shitshow.

Yes there is, and what I didn't take into consideration was how fast the manga itself blitzed that last arc, and it's possible the anime will actually do the opposite of what it did here and slow that pacing down to acceptable levels. I really don't have any faith they would pull that off though. It is hard to say.

I know this is probably not an original thought, but today I realized that Ichinose is basically Zoro/Luffy squashed together while Zenkichi is Usopp/Sanji and it feels almost like a purposeful homage rather than a rip off.

Turns out the arc all the Promised Neverland manga fans said was really good is actually pretty good so far. Who could have seen this coming? :shocked_pikachu_face:

Also probably stands a lot more to be gained in an anime adaptation unfortunately, though I was basically floored by the directing in season 1 and how much it added to the atmosphere, so who knows. Love most of the new major characters though, and Leuvis is easily the best villain the series has had so far. Emma continues to be amazing which is as expected.

Spot on. As much as the season 2 anime is just not good at all in its own right, the predominant feeling is still rage at them just completely taking out the best part of the series.

Well I still maintain that you could take out this arc without damaging the cohesion of the narrative, which means there is a hypothetical version of an anime that skips the arc which I'm happy with. I don't know if season 2 actually accomplished it successfully, but I do think it's possible and not too farfetched. (Edit: I guess it also depends on whether or not some of these new characters have important roles in later arcs though, since if they do I'm sure all of their development will have been destroyed as a result of taking out this arc. It only really works if you can cut this set of characters entirely or nearly entirely.)

Though, my general feeling about the series as a whole is that it's notably weaker with its overall narrative than it is at character writing and with handling these closed-system battle-of-wits scenarios. I haven't really seen the endgame content yet, but based on manga readers' reactions I'm going to guess that doesn't change, which might also mean that skipping straight to the endgame content might be a recipe for mediocrity from the beginning. Who knows? (Obviously people who have read the entire manga are in a decent position to answer this, but I am not as of now)

Also I actually liked the first arc more still, though that might also be because the adaptation of the first arc was that good. I don't know. I'm also not done with Goldy Pond yet though.

Hmm...I guess I would also say that Goldy Pond feels very important from a thematic standpoint even if it isn't as much from a literal "order of events" standpoint (not sure what to call this). That also potentially complicates skipping the arc since it means you have to somehow incorporate these ideas later on without seeming hamfisted about it or else you will lose something in the process.

It's theoretically a skippable arc. The problem is that you're skipping it to get to much worse content, and it wasn't the only thing that was skipped, so there are some real awkward episodes basically summarizing dozens of chapters of character development in one or two episodes.

As a battle shonen guy I liked the action but iirc goldy pond wasn't universally liked when it was "airing."

started Shippuden and almost at the end of the Sasori fight

this fight started off so good with cool looking puppet but quickly devolved into just a bishounen guy controlling a bunch of ugly puppets

the final stretch of the fight with the number of puppets really ruined how cool the puppet concept was, and how each puppet was supposed to be unique

I think the same kind of meta argument used against Healer and Jobless could be applied to Horimiya, but the way Miyamura is characterized (reluctant) is way different from Cure (vindicated/self-righteous) and Rudeus (shameless)

To be fair I have the foreknowledge of how this stuff advances later on, so I may be seeing it a bit differently. I'm pretty sure I remember being pretty wierded out at first, too, but I was blitzing the manga so fast that I didn't linger on the introduction until it became more of a gag then anything.

Having read all of the spoilers I think it's hilarious that these people are losing their minds, but I also totally get why because BOY are some of these things seemingly specifically there to troll the fans Anno hates so much.

It's odd because I had always assumed this movie was gonna be terrible and had no expectations since I thought 3.0 was so horrendous, but I guess there were people who were HEAVILY invested in it's release and biting their teeth at the multiple years of delays?

What is catching me off guard is I'm getting the feel that the movie is awful but just a blast to watch, which I would not expect because 3.0 was such a dull slow slog. I definitely can see it based on spoilers, though, and will absolutely be watching it.
